What small business needs to rob workers of lunch to feel confident?

So National are promising that lunchtime will be gone by lunchtime?

What new petty hell is this?

90-day trials would return, but lunchtime gone by lunchtime under National small business policy

The National Party wants to scrap the ban on 90-day trials, overturn mandatory rest and meal breaks, and cut costs as a part of a package it hopes will help small businesses to lead an economic recovery.

For the love of Christ, removing worker employment stability and lunch breaks won’t lead any economic recovery coming out of a pandemic!

This is just policy pandering to the Business lobby, making life harder for workers doesn’t build anything except inequality and exploitation!

If we are going to rebuild, why would we rebuild inequality?

Is the National Party even trying to win or are they so captured by the wealthy that they can’t imagine reconstructing NZ post pandemic without inducing exploitation to do it?

National would charge fees to use the lifeboats on the Titanic.

If you needed another reason not to vote for these arseholes, this is certainly it.

  1. I’m really pleased with this policy announcement. It’s exactly the sort of transparency NZ voters need and deserve to see prior to election day. It’s a contemptible anti-worker policy which is what National does very well. It wasn’t enough in their 9 long years that they created a low wage economy so business could cream it off the back of a workforce they knew were struggling to make ends meet. National have shown they’ve learned absolutely diddly in opposition. NZ has happily moved on from their divisive policies and false economy. Workers who may not have bothered voting will now be guaranteed to vote and that spells even more bad news for National.

This is the type of policy National would normally keep to its self and then unleash on the workforce after the election so learning about it now is Gold. The drubbing Collins and National were on track to receive on election day will now be a total wipeout. Very sad of course 🙂

  2. ‘National would charge fees to use the lifeboats on the Titanic’

Of course. And there wouldn’t be anywhere near enough lifeboats, so only those who could pay an exorbitant (exploitive) price would get a seat. ‘”The rest of you can bugger off and drown.”

As for the main theme of the article, they won’t be a recovery OF the economy, only a recovery FROM it.

The collapse of the financial-economic system commenced decades ago, and is rapidly gathering pace now that Covid-19 has exposed so many defects and scams and put and end to growth.

  3. Is the National Party even trying to win or are they so captured by the wealthy that they can’t imagine reconstructing NZ post pandemic without inducing exploitation to do it?

The only way to become wealthy is by stealing off of the poor and so National makes such stealing easier for those that want to be wealthy.

  4. ” National would charge fees to use the lifeboats on the Titanic ”…

    ROLF !!!

    Says it all.

    As does THIS :

This announcement is not aimed at kiwi workers but at those businesses that are by law allowed under neoliberalisim to exploit workers from overseas.
Kiwis are used to being taken advantage of , its just accepted as normal but the slaves from overseas won’t question working all the hours they are told to and more without a break.
This is where a strong union movement would be in Nationals face over this type of attack but in a way that acknowledges business owners to ” do the right thing by their employees.

  7. Oh daer. media hyperbole spin in top gear.

ie Judith saying MANDATORY meal breaks gone.

Ie in 2018 the COL changed the legislation from agreed/reasonable meal breaks.

    To a mandated schedule.
    https://www.employment.govt.nz/assets/Uploads/3fe2e990b4/changes-to-rest-and-meal-break-entitlements-frequently-asked-questions.pdf

Can I suggest that Judith was clumsily saying, cancell that bit of legislation and go back to the previous law.

Of course I expected you to do a Trump and Spin this to some mis information as per your post above.

    • You mean the previous law that the John Key government put in place against heavy opposition because it would, inevitably, result in people not getting breaks?

Or the one before that when breaks were mandatory?

And you should probably note that the new law allows for breaks to be negotiated but if they can’t then the mandatory schedule is used according to your own link.

  8. Yes what a bunch of c$&?s ( hat tip Marama)
Despite the raft of evidence showing rested workers perform better. And just actual common sense and decency.
There are exactly zero parties who back working people.
    Lunchtime gone by lunchtime.

  9. I actually like it when National does things like this. Surely it MUST turn people away from them. I mean, what kind of a person (boss or not) would vote for a party that basically advocates work slavery with no breaks? Even their shrinking loyal party base must be shivering. Unless I’m wrong and the sociopaths love and want this kind of behaviour.

  10. fuck collins. She’s a nothing and hilariously for me, she secretely knows it. Like her predecessors, she’s nothing. An annoyance at most. She, like jonky etc are not much more than a costly diversion from reality.
Our real and true concerns lie with our dark and invisible masters.
And who, do you think, they might be…?
What we must remember is that we few are occupying Paradise.
Now? Who, of you, think that occupying Paradise doesn’t come with responsibilities and cost?
It’s my humble opinion, that we’re part of a larger tangled web because our political lot are not much more than a 2 x tom cat spat.

    • The real meaning of ‘be kind’ to workers in National Party’s eyes. “No workers lunch and tea breaks when National takes over.”

  11. No one should be surprised by this.
It’s Nationals toxic playbook and it’s got serious form.
Think Shipley, Richardson, Brash and Key
Problem for Judith is that this kind of narrative is no longer credible in a pandemic world other than to the desperate and delusional ie whats left of the National Party

  12. If everyone thought like you labour (Union) lot we would not have small to medium size businesses in NZ. We business owners, sure take risks to make money but if we didnt then so many other poeple would not reap the benefits of our risk. Wake up. Think of others and not just yourselves. Ask yorselves how much do Union delegates earn!!!!!!!! You guys are parasites when hard working people and business owners have a dissagreement they lose money you guys lose nothing. Words are cheap. Walk the talk wake up, get a life and try to get a real job!

      • Many years ago, 70s I think, some researches found that production from workers, doing mundane boring work, actually went up immediately after a break. The recommendation was to have six breaks in an eight hour day.

    • You business owners continue to be caught out exploiting workers. Without them you dont have a business .Seems very entitled opinion to me

    • Well.at least not during his reign of EQC because it seems all the money was spent at the buffet table whilst homeowners had to eat cake.
