Wait, WHAT?

National board member Roger Bridge, aka ‘Merv’, resigns the party after investigation into late night talkback calls

Long-serving National board member Roger Bridge has resigned from the party after it was discovered he used the alias ‘Merv’ to call talkback radio and complain about his party’s candidate selection process in Auckland Central.

In a statement this afternoon, National’s president Peter Goodfellow said Bridge tendered his resignation after the party’s board “thoroughly investigated and discussed the matter”.

After a board meeting last night, Bridge tendered his resignation, which was accepted.

In the rush to lockdown the country during the latest Covid outbreak, we missed the finer details of their latest example of appalling National Party behaviour.

So again, from the top, ONZM awarded National Party mandarin, Roger Bridge, called up a late night talkback host to smear a young National Party candidate while insinuating  something about her personally.

What sort of scumbag sinks to these levels for something as petty as the candidacy of Auckland central?

  1. Good riddance to yet another dirty politics low-life in the National Party. But in typical fashion for this dreadful party the president Goodfellow tried to play it down by saying it was just a mistake and then lauding this reprobate:

“Goodfellow also said everyone makes mistakes, and this was an unfortunate situation for someone who has given many years of loyal service to the National party.”

  2. I’m sure “Merv’s” fellow Canterbury National Party board members thought his little ZB prank was the most hilarious triggering of lefty Auckland snowflakes in history.

Peter Goodfellow, however, was instantly reminded of the dangers of Chloe Swarbrick and the Green’s proposed wealth tax. I’m told his sphincter clamped up so hard the proctologist needed a power drill to gain access to his back passage.

  3. “Merv the perv” what a guy, anonymously (he thought) targeted one of the few brown, female, young, aspirational Nats. Nuwanthie got fit and was proud of it, on Facebook. This was way too much for Merv who blew a gasket and tried to take her down. Now that might be understandable for some dozy reactionary tory sitting at home to fantasise about doing. But for a senior, allegedly reputable NZ National Party Board member…surely a definite no no?
–Just imagine if a Labour, Green or NZ First senior party member had done the same sleazy thing!

  4. For goodness sake this creep was a senior National Party Board member – WHO WOULD WANT TO SUPPORT THIS PARTY IF THIS IS HOW THEY TREAT THEIR OWN CANDIDATES. WHAT A SICKO. Listening to his ramblings was sickening. I wonder if he has family – THEY MUST BE SOOOOOO PROUD – NOT.

    A National party scumbag.
These people have been so used to behaving in this manner that they seriously believe that is the way to run our country and stay in control of the narrative over everything including braking the law ( Michelle Boag and that shit Walker ) if it meant bringing down an elected government and destroying confidence in our health service just to be back in control.
There needs to be a massive clean out if this party ever wants to be considered worthy to govern again in our country.
This last term has shown just how contemptible the current National party really is and the polls are reflecting that.
