Despite the 10 billion stories of woe & heartbreak at the NZ border from everyone screaming about being locked out – expect no mercy before September 20th

Another day another story of woe from the border about someone who can’t get back in past the now humourlessly brutal border restrictions.

It is a steady stream of people holding their scars up to the media crying out that their pain is worse and deserving of exemption.

Two children decided burning the PM in public was the best way to get dad in past the border quarantine

“He’s not a Hollywood movie star, but he’s my superhero and we want him here,”

..protip, don’t attempt to embarrass the PM when you want Dad home.

The naked truth is that there will be no mercy until the day after the election because domestic New Zealanders have suddenly realised how lucky we are to be plague free and nothing NOTHING will move this nation to risk any entry beyond our capacity to safely facilitate.

Domestic NZers are seeing the horror that the rest of the planet is attempting to flee from to here and they are being ruthless in terms of holding Political leaders to account if there is a leak.

Jacinda’s staggering outright majority would evaporate within a week of a Covid leak that could be blamed on bureaucratic incompetence.

NZ is under lifeboat rules, you wait patiently and enter the life boat slowly so that you can’t over turn the lifeboat, and if you drown waiting, sorry about that.

Look at how the country erupted over the Covid Karen’s who toured NZ with hugs and redirections, that backlash made Labour sit up and realise that the same electorate who want to canonise Jacinda will hang her with the next breath if some public servant incompetence allows the virus in.

For most middle class NZers, they’ve never felt vulnerable the way the working classes, beneficiaries, poor and the Precariat feel every day of their lives and that experience of feeling vulnerable during lockdown has given the middle classes a sense that their sacrifice was the greatest act of courage since our boys stormed the beaches of Gallipoli.

Like everything in our herd like culture, any good thing can quickly become a stampeding negative. Our positive solidarity in lockdown which is propelling Labour to an unprecedented majority is the same toxic solidarity that universally demands a ruthless border quarantine process that would make your average drug cartel blush.

Kindness will return the moment political careers aren’t on the line.

Until then, doggy paddle.

  1. Well said Martyn,

We are very lucky to have no community transmission so we need to hold the line until we find methods to stop any community transmissions should it ever appear.

No-one else in the world has yet so we are sorry US ex army man I was in the NZ army and was taught to shoulder “stress and discomfort so you are adequately able to wait this out Sir.

  2. Anyone interested in what REAL hardship is needs to watch the following because most people in NZ, Oz, UK etc. have had it so good for so long they don’t appreciate it.

Civil War, followed by a collapsed economy, followed by Covid-19 pandemic in which hospitals hardly cope, followed by the biggest non-nuclear explosion in history and thousands of dwelling smashed to smithereens, followed by no one except less-unfortunate citizens to help.

And when people protest they are fired at with tear gas and rubber bullets.

  3. Vietnam thought they were plague-free too. Turns they aren’t:

Now here’s a bit worst-case scenario I’m speculating (and I think there is already evidence backs me up). What if this virus behaves like herpes or chicken pox and lies dormant in people that have had and can re-emerge whenever your immune system is low? This would also explain this story:

She was almost certain she had already the virus back in March. “The woman thought her positive test result was not because she had recently contacted coronavirus but because she might have picked it up in March.”
What if this virus can effectively never be eliminated because it lies dormant in anyone who has ever had it and thus can and will simply rear its ugly head again at any given time and resume its spread.

  4. Good blog post. We have turned into a total nanny state. France had it bad but now they are getting on with life, and allowing people in from low Covid countries with no ill effect. Some taxpaying NZers have young children overseas…and now thr Government is taxing us to go and see them. It is disgusting.

    • Rod,

Wake up to yourself. The world does not revolve around you and your needs. I also pay a shitload of tax and don’t welcome paying the quarantine costs of people who decide to leave NZ during a deadly pandemic for an offshore holiday or family catch up. I get it, you expect the Government to write thousands of different laws to suit the needs of every individual who wants to travel overseas at this time.

You conveniently play down the risks of Covid to all Kiwis because it suits your needs and perspective. France is not NZ. I could easily use several other countries to highlight how absurd your statement is. We could get a second wave here at any time. Then what? Will you still be spouting off about France and saying how disgusting it is that you have to pay if you choose to come and go in and out of NZ when it suits you?
