  1. Victoria is now under both a state of emergency and a state of disaster. A state of disaster was declared there during the bushfires, about six months ago. Now the pandemic has brought out that same legislation, as from 6.00 pm yesterday. It may be in place for up to a month.

It gives police and emergency services much broader powers to enforce new coronavirus restrictions, including the Melbourne-wide curfew every night.

It also gives authorities the ability to suspend Acts of Parliament and take possession of properties. Victoria State of Disaster Explained

    • And they are making sure that no right wing Oz lawyer making a name for him or herself tries to question the powers that the State has to act with authority in response to the vicissitudes of the situation. In light of NZ experience this is wise –
Ms Neville [Emergency Services Minsiter] said the Government needed the legislation to ensure it had clear power to impose and enforce the curfew and other parts of the new rules.
“For all those who want to test the police powers, this now puts out of doubt any of those police powers,” she said.

Under the Act, the Emergency Services Minister can “control and restrict entry into, movement within and departure from the disaster area of any part of it”. In this case, that means all of Victoria.

The Minister can also delegate the Emergency Management Commissioner — who is currently Andrew Crisp — “or any other person” any of her powers or functions.
This means police and other emergency services will get the power to enforce the new restrictions.

  2. Praise to that doughty protester on hunger strike drawing attention to climate change. Bang on about it on a big bass drum as the Greens have, it still requires more to get through to people that if you’re happy and you know it clap your hands and don’t think about being aware and responsible in the world, and if you should be happy and you don’t know it – you are both selfish and probably wilfully ignorant and irresponsible.

    So – https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/422581/man-hands-over-climate-change-hunger-strike-after-21-days
David Goldsmith has been doing the strike outside Parliament calling for meaningful action against carbon emissions.
He will hand over the strike to retired doctor, Robin Treadwell.
Goldsmith who has been surviving off vitamin supplements and water said the strike has been difficult but fighting against climate change is worth it.

Thank you to these good men. And we will do something too in our own ways won’t we, to spread the word and help get a new system.
