Dear Labour – it will be OUR people who suffer border quarantine fees, not wealthy white boomers

Dear Labour

The National Party are selling a myth to the people of NZ that this obscene border charge will punish white wealthy boomers frolicking around the South of France when the truth is that these returning New Zealanders are not wealthy boomers, they are us!

They are backpackers, students those who have lost their jobs and they won’t be jetting back from Europe first class darling, they will be from Australia or the Pacific Islands.

There are almost 600 000 NZers in Australia, and half that number of Pacific Islanders living in NZ who constantly bounce between here and the Islands. With the unemployment rates looming in Australia and the Islands because of Covid, many of our people will have to come home, something they won’t be able to do if they have to pay a bloody $3000 fee!!!

We can’t hold Citizens and Permanent Residents against their will for 14 days AND charge them for it!

Look, tourists, migrant workers and international students SHOULD pay for their quarantine, we all agree on that, but Citizens and Permanent Residents have rights.

This will hurt our community, our people, our families.

Don’t do this Labour.

  1. So who does pay the fuck for it then? Ordinary workers in New Zealand who pay taxes in New Zealand – whereas many of those overseas have not?

  2. Not sure where the brain fart that it’s wealthy white boomers coming home… The white wealthy boomers are all holidaying in Queenstown and Coromandel.

I’d bet most of the people coming back are dual residents in NZ aka.

    https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/300058348/taranaki-couple-stranded-in-india-do-not-meet-high-reentry-border-criteria

Since you mention ethnicity and colour, not sure those returning for the free health care, Covid safety and benefits are all these fictional white wealthy boomers instead they are just as likely to be those on a dual passports who got quicky residency in the last few years under our our neoliberal laws to create a low wage economy here and now want to return for a few years on benefits with safe harbour from Covid. Then there are those who during our give-away spree on NZ residency in the last 6 years want to cash in on that ponzi before it closes to them aka the article above.

Sady that means that those already employed in those jobs, will presumably lose their own jobs and be unemployed. And unemployment is predicted to be high in NZ.

Some of the returnee’s are infected with Covid which NZ then has to deal with ….

Some of them seem pretty selfish!

I know the woke media in NZ only feels ‘comfortable’ naming and shaming and printing ‘white’ bad faces of NZ these days, but I’d bet that some of the Covid infected escapee’s are newbee NZ residents who are not ‘white boomers’ and have contributed not a lot, and worse, and their faces and names will be protected because of that, in our woke discrimination. And most people in NZ know it, which is why nobody takes NZ media seriously anymore. I’t’s mostly just paid for woke dribble, pro migrant rights speak, and real news or balance to anything, is not reported.

All this woke talk, is gold for Dark Lord Judith, too, because woke speak jettison’s public support wherever they go, aka Pride Parade.

BTW – Natz are also making it 20 years for offshore pensioners to live in NZ before they qualify for a free NZ state pension. I’m sure the woke are against it, as giving away NZ’s pensions to foreign pensioners, is part of the our kind face to Asia in particular, while creating a poverty face to local taxpayers.

Interesting to see COL’s views on this, cos are they expecting the current user pays taxpayers to support more and more new resident asian boomers and pensioners here with free pensions forever?

Demand is so great that Asian pensioners in NZ are expected to supersede both the Maori and Pacific Islander pensioner numbers in a few years. That’s pretty much ruining the country and the future for everyone else to get a pension. (And health care, and retirement care).

So woke, keep demanding that taxpayers keep paying the expenses of those who just got to NZ!

Weird how those lefties that think the NZ millennials are all hard done by, think that they should pay for the returnee’s expenses…

I’m pretty sure, not many agree with you.

  3. The Greens might be able to pick up more overseas votes if Labour start charging. But we also need to be sensible and realistic and say how long can we pay for this. Can we reduce the quarantine costs in anyway and if so how can we do this without compromising the quality of the service and safety measures.

  4. here’s my reality I’ve got whanau living in cars and my taxes are paying for “others” I don’t give a fuck what nationality they are, and what country they have come from. If they got in here off the back of a visa and then been gifted Permanent Residency and then citizenship of the back of bad immigration policy. I don’t want to pay for them to come back here in quarantine and then go on a benefit. I want the people here my whanau who are living hand to mouth to get proper fucking housing and food on the table like that is not too much to ask aye. The Fucking sob stories just keep coming through. If you were born here in NZ then you have every right to be let back in and not have to pay. Simple.

    • Well I am a NZ citizen whose entire income comes from overseas work. On Thursday I fly to the UK for 2 months, risking my health, so that I can provide for my whanau without having to sponge off the government. Every dollar I earn overseas I pay tax on in NZ. What’s your view on whether I should pay the $3k ?

      • You get to claim quarantine as a business expense no doubt just like the flights, if that scenario, is even true. Harden up!

      • Yeah you could get a job here but you choose to go overseas. I assume you dont go there to be paid peanuts. Yes it should be part of your overheads.

  5. I honestly think the fee is a shirt sighted attempt to dissuade people from returning. Let’s face it the horrible fact is due to decades of neoliberalism and short sighted planning, we can’t afford for even half or our expats to come home. There’s no houses, jobs, our cities are almost collapsing as it is, if even 700 k kiwis return home wed see rents skyrocket, tent cities, our health system which nearly collapses every winter would be on life support. Imagine another 200-300 k kiwis in Auckland alone over the next six months. Frightening.

It’s disgusting that we have no place for our expats but we don’t, NZ has one of the biggest percentages of expats to residents in the world and the chickens were always going to come home to roost. The people who will suffer the most from rent rises and job competition are the working poor and Beneficiaries, and that’s why I think it’s these classes who more than anyone don’t want expats returning.

It’s a dumb short sighted policy and no party in NZ has a house building and employment policy that truly deals with the scope of the problems current citizens face let alone what would happen if 1.5 million of kiwis came home.

    Dark days ahead

  6. Some people have to travel overseas to see their children (think under 15 years old), who need to see their father or mother. They pay taxes here, are NZ citizens, they shouldn’t have to pay $3k extra to see their child, and be in quarantine.

    • The rest of the country shouldn’t have to pay for other people’s failed and messy relationship situations…. again if this is really true…

  7. Oh but they said they want to do it Martyn. Which I would think tells ordinary voters like myself for the 1000th time that Labour are a “neo liberal” party just like National. Given I’m a Socialist why would I want to vote for that!

  8. Food only – that is what they should be paying for they have to eat. so pay a couple of hundred a week for their food.

  9. Our PUBLIC health system provides all sorts of expensive hi-tech health care that many of us probably (fingers crossed) will not require. Charging NZers coming home for quarantine facilities when we all benefit from that barrier is not how PUBLIC health works. I’m not sure we shouldn’t be paying the quantinees for their time in this service to the country.

  10. I believe that I am one of the exceptions to what has been proposed about returnees paying for their quarantine. I, regretfully, am on a WINZ jobseekers’ allowance despite having attained 2 degrees in Sociology at UC as an adult student by the end of 2018. I applied for numerous jobs and even got an apology from the Ministry of Social Development for their stuff ups with a job application.

At the end of last year, my father-in-law asked me to come to Brisbane to help look after my mother (who has Lewy Body Dementia) while he underwent a process of daily radiation treatment for over 40 sessions. I flew here on 29 February to help with the intention of being here for 6-7 weeks, and then within a month, became incarcerated because of COVID19. (Being in lockdown with my formerly sharp-witted mother while her mental state has been deteriorating is not any-thing I’d wish upon anyone.)
I had initially accepted that WINZ would stop paying me after being here for 20 days but wrote to them 2 weeks into lockdown explaining my predicament and the fact that not being able to pay rent was going to create a problem. WINZ have been good and are paying me, but that does not put me in a position to pay upon my return if and when that happens. In addition, Emirates Airline who I had my flights booked with are not flying from Brisbane to Chch so that is an added problem. I don’t need the added fare.

I am missing my dog, have altruistic intentions despite not being employed, and take umbrage to sweeping allegations made without considering all the mitigating circumstances.

    • This is why we shouldn’t be charging!
We cannot make it conditional for our citizens to return.
However if you have dual citizenship and return to New Zealand is a choice… then you should pay!
