  1. Is this surprising? The study of 955 first-year students at the University of Canterbury last year found 60 percent were influenced by the policy, but 26 percent enrolled only because their first year was free.

Many young people have trouble going away from home and undertaking this new role in a new place amongst new people. In the past there was a provision, that if a student did not pass all their papers, they had to take out a loan to pay for their costs and pass at least one course before they could apply for help with the rest of their studies. Paying expensive researchers to helicopter watch citizens and critique them as to their effort and determination, is unnecessary. They should be able to get extra tutoring when they are stuck at the beginning and that would be a better use of money. Watching how they get on later then ensures that anyone unable to achieve is sorted out, has a second chance to prove their capability, and then has a career deciding interview.
Universities in a small country with low educational and intellectual aspirations, need to be more than teaching
halls. The abandonment and death of that young student alone in his room down south is a failure of a factory-style system of education, concerned more with physical built-assets than the knowledge-gaining minds of the pliant humans receiving instruction.

  2. Is this the most grotesque piece of writing you have ever seen in the news or was broadcast in NZ?
