Waatea News Column: What latest Poll means for the Maori Party?

TVNZs latest Poll shows the same trend the TV3 Poll did, the National Party is in meltdown as the country thanks Jacinda for saving us from the public health pandemic nightmare we are witnessing in other countries.

It also shows a ray of hope for the Māori Party.

The unrounded Māori Party result in the TVNZ Poll was actually 1.2%. At 1.4% the Māori Party would win a second MP off the list if they win an electorate.

Seeing as the Māori Party have a real possibility of winning two Māori electorates in September, that could become 3 MPs.

With the Greens and NZ First under the threshold for representation, the Māori Party could be an unseen winner at the Polls.

The recent $900million Labour Māori Caucus members managed to wrestle out of the Government in the budget makes a direct challenge against Jacinda a terrible strategy, but if the Māori Party were to argue that they will help the Government do the best for Māori and point out the Māori Caucus would all be re-elected on Labour’s current polling anyway, they can make the case that an electorate vote for the Māori Party doubles the Māori representation, not lessens it.
