  1. Fonterra, Genesis Energy and Z will go to trial for ‘failing to protect against effects of climate change’.

Environmental activist and iwi leader Mike Smith has received permission to continue the court proceedings he is bringing against New Zealand’s top carbon emitters. The charge is their failure to protect Aotearoa NZ from the effects of climate change. Fonterra Genesis Energy and Z to go on trial

    • Good news. Now Assange.

But Australia has no doubt made it clear to the USA that he is non persona grata with them, an embarrassment for giving away USA truths that they and Oz probably traded quietly when they were in bed together. We know that many Australian politicians particularly on the Liberal/National coalition, are very sceptical about whether other humans, besides the pollies and their almost-loved ones, have any rights. Peter Dutton is very assiduous in stating his position, which is lying on the ground behind cover with binoculars, scrutinising people he has decided he doesn’t like. He has gone to the extreme by appearing to catch Covid-19 virus, and going into isolation. This is a cunning plan to once more harass and embarrass Kiwis, this time a politician who had made the mistake of going to a 5-Eyes conference overseas, and met him. But I don’t think they shook hands. However if Peter Dutton has the virus, it will he a robust strain trained to attack anyone he doesn’t like, and Kiwi people are on the list. The real bird should be kept away also.

The goss is that he plans to spend the time on Manus Island seeing for himself the luxurious living conditions that unwanteds are enjoying there as he has never believed the constant whining about the poor, even harsh standards those queue-jumpers and ‘terrorists’ are held in. /sarc

  2. This is a good recent report 5 Mar from the Lancet comparing SARS outbreak to Covid-19.
    https://www.thelancet.com/journals/laninf/article/PIIS1473-3099(20)30129-8/fulltext

I like this opinion, offers hope and useful advice. Even if traditional public health measures are not able to fully contain the outbreak of COVID-19, they will still be effective in reducing peak incidence and global deaths. Exportations to other countries need not result in rapid large-scale outbreaks, if countries have the political will to rapidly implement countermeasures.

  3. I can’t afford the time to watch television. I prefer to go to see films at the movie house, to read news from reliable newspapers, same on-line, to hear the local and world news from a reliable, stable Radionz casting a wide net for the real wold-wide news with dedicated, informed, cosmopolitan staff. Because there is so much to know and I know there is so much I don’t know.

One person I had never heard of, to my shame, was Sir Rob Fenwick who has died at 68 years. He was an environmentalist and had businesses in the food product industry. He was also part of the fairly new Aotearoa Circle with the aim of turning round the decline of our country’s natural capital. We should look for and support everything they do.
    This is something he said:
Two years ago, with others, I started the Aotearoa Circle, a group of public- and private-sector leaders committed to halting the decline of New Zealand’s natural capital. It came on the coat-tails of the Environment Aotearoa state of the environment report, which showed all our stocks of natural capital – soils, fresh water, the climate, biodiversity and the marine environment – were in decline. It is reasonable to predict that in 100-200 years, our biological economy will be bankrupt. It’s a horrific legacy to bequeath to future generations. The Aotearoa Circle aims to shift the levers of investment from environmentally unsustainable extractive industries to intergenerational protection of the pillars of natural capital. And guess what the secret to preserving New Zealand’s natural capital is? Trees.

As I contemplate my own demise, I return often in my mind to my favourite tree – that pūriri holding court on Waiheke Island. I consider this magnificent being, by far the oldest living thing I know, holding in its branches the diversity of nature – from the plump, cheeky kererū to the magnificent pūriri moth whose lifeblood is the tree’s juicy sap.

Imagine that this pūriri could one day be the last lonely cradle of the kererū and pūriri moth. For them, like me, like so much of New Zealand’s biodiversity, time is running out. I can tell you in plain English that I am dying. And although the environment might speak its own language, its cries cannot be misunderstood. We know what is happening, we know what we must do – now, we must simply do it.

  4. You’ve been cancelled

The response to the Coronavirus is all over the place. The disease is not so important that some health professionals can strike during it’s initial spread. The disease is so important that whole continents are designated as off limits. The virus is that dangerous that the Pasifika festival is cancelled for fear of spreading it into the Pacific region. The virus is not that dangerous because people from all over the world can visit WOMAD which isn’t cancelled. Which is it?

    • Well first thought that occurs is that we were blamed for introducing the measles epidemic to the Islands, which was partly? true. We don’t want to be the nasty again. Also Pacific Islanders were coming for a festival celebrating the Islanders and many would be coming here to perform, support, enjoy,, and would be joined by NZs. With WOMAD it is more performers coming to our festival and I hope they have been screened and for the best outcome, spent 14 days in isolation in a suitable place before performing.

      • Agreed, Jacinda’s decision to exempt the ‘Pacific Islands’ (not Australia incidentally) from travel restrictions is very unusual, she said we had a duty to protect these people’s. It appears to be politicking and appeasement for giving the region the measles epidemic and taking away the Pasifika festival. The virus doesn’t differentiate between people and neither should government restrictions.

  6. Is there some sort of malware attack on TDB, preventing comments going through? (I hope everyone’s okay?)

  7. Yeah sorry about the double submission, when a comment doesn’t show up I sometimes wonder if an error has taken place during transmission rather than TDB actively reviewing the submission before release. One way to eliminate replicate submissions would be to receive some sort of confirmation pop up box from TDB when clicking Post Comment which verifies the comment has been received by TDB for consideration and which needs a button click to continue.

    • Good idea Popeye, just a confirming ‘received’ email. Doesn’t mean that we will always go up but it makes clear that it has been received. Of course all new things have to be done and inserted in the program by someone – time and possibly money. Still what do you think Martyn Bradbury?
