Jacinda has no choice but to shut down Christchurch memorial and Pasifika

The worst case scenario is rapidly becoming the only scenario.

The market apocalypse unfolding now will only get worse because this is happening at the top of a bull run that has been fuelled by a decade of quantitive easing.

We have far further to fall, maybe up to another 40%.

All we did in 2008 was kick the problem down the road. We’ve run out of road.

What is most concerning is that this is all happening BEFORE the pandemic has even erupted.

You think things are bad now? Wait until the virus spreads uncontrollably, over runs hospitals and the global death toll starts rolling into the millions.

This is the new normal until we get a vaccination, and that is 12-18 months away. The constant threat of reinfection, quarantines and mass sickness means this can’t get better until the vaccine is here.

It just can’t.

All public events have to be cancelled because any chance of it spreading now will be blamed directly on the Government. Jacinda has no choice but to close the Christchurch memorial and Pasifika.

When the first news of this novel virus struck, our mighty elites on Twitter screamed racism at any criticism, Nigel Latta did the same…

…while Dr Lance O’Sullivan and scientist Siouxsie Wiles under played it.

The sooner we start planning for this to be a worst case scenario event, the sooner we can prepare for that worst case scenario.

We are still horribly behind the ball here because no one in Government wants to accept what is coming.

  1. And of course corona will be scapegoated so people blame the virus instead of decades of terrible public policy and underfunding critical public services.

  2. I see the greedy ANZ bank has waded into it saying don’t give the pay increases after they have made a record profit all to go overseas maybe they should drop some of their bank charges typical bloody hypocrites that is precisely why I bank for a small NZ customer owned bank, The Cooperative Bank. It is about time more NZers left those greedy quick to give away your private information Aussie banks (Westpac comes to mind) and what other unethical behaviour has the BNZ and ANZ been up to. (over charging customers, selling homes below the true rate to their own, charging people bank fees who are dead)

  3. Jacinda has no choice but to close the Christchurch memorial

For the Memorial, she can still meet with the immediate families of those directly affected by the massacre. But it should be a relatively small, private meeting, not a big open public one. That small, quiet memorial can still be televised.

  4. Lol poor MR Latta crucified some more.
The Christchurch memorial is dumb for all sorts of readons:
    1) Christchurch just wants to move on
    2) Muslims just want to move on and have said so
    3) It’s airtime and validation for the shooter who the PM won’t name but ceremonialise instead
4)It’s a target for further nut jobbery.
And yeah I suppose 5), large gathering, virus etc.

But of course as it was Jacindas finest hour it is major political capital in an election year.
It will be quite disgusting if it goes ahead.

    • Keep calm and stop carrying on.! Leave our PM alone. She needs defending from sneerers like you. She is the best we can get at the moment and worth 1,000 of you. And she is doing her best which is very good, though never can please everybody, times are too difficult, people are too unreasonable ie lacking the faculty of reason.
Think of the many leaders we hear about, bad, sad and mad etc. If you can’t say anything good, don’t look for some cowshit to throw, just say nothing eh.

      • No one is beyond criticism greywarbler, especially those in authority and especially those who have been economical with the truth.
How about refuting my valid points, or are you only capable of emotive put downs?
Deplatforming is not an argument, something Labour/greens are going to find out at the election.

  5. Grab your shot gun and head for the hills or keep calm and carry on You have 2 choices Hint one leads to dystopia, the other collaboration and battling though a tough situation

  6. NZ is the world’s biggest open door to everything. And whether it’s a man or woman in charge makes no difference, we can’t say no to anything (without checking first iwth intimate funders and business heroes that stride the various ditches like Colossus.

Feb 16 2020 PM Ardern has been preparing NZ for difficult times – are we anxious – surely we can go on being easy-peasy. Who’s going to be the nasty person to stop us from doing what we want, then? Jacinda has to try in the face of the spoiled-children era of the millenials. She will be blamed by the listings below from spoiling their efforts at capital accumulation.

  7. 5 confirmed cases all with a know cause. Let’s take a deep breath and be realistic . In Italy where there is a high death rate 95% were over 80 so could have been taken out by normal flu . The virus is serious and will have a impact on the world financial situation but it is a bump in the road not the end of civilization as we know it .

  8. You would show a bit of balance by telling us what Mr Latta is saying now, obviously his first opinion was totally wrong (about the kindest thing I can say about it) but I would be very surprised if he still agrees with it now.
As for no choice on shutting public events the MSM tell us that all current cases have been traced to infected persons & that the Corona-virus is not in the general public, obviously I would not recommend blind faith in the MSM but people are able to make their own choice about public events & we live in hope that the government has enough intelligent people examining the virus spread so they can make the correct decision on running future events.

  9. This where her vanity prevails … photo op. It will bite her in the arse when 100’s start lining up at already overloaded hospitals for the coronavirus test.

  10. This outbreak is no worse than SARS or MERS, neither of which were world ending, and COVID-19 infections have already peaked in China, according to a combined WHO-Chinese medical mission. From a Guardian article current on 2020-03-06, talking about the death rate:
“[UK] chief medical officer, Chris Whitty, is one of those who believes it will prove to be 1% or lower. The World Health Organization’s director general, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, talked of 3.4%, but his figure was calculated by dividing the number of deaths by the number of officially confirmed cases. We know there are many more mild cases that do not get to hospital and are not being counted, which would bring the mortality rate significantly down.

Deaths are highest in the elderly, with very low rates among younger people, although medical staff who treat patients and get exposed to a lot of virus are thought to be more at risk. But even among the over-80s, 90% will recover.”
    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/06/coronavirus-facts-what-is-the-mortality-rate-and-is-there-a-cure-covid-19

I agree with Latta, O’Sullivan, and Wiles. The sky is not falling. There’s absolutely no need to cancel public events in Aotearoa.

    • I just read this article and now I’m questioning the ‘she’ll be right’ attitude of my previous comment:
      https://medium.com/@tomaspueyo/coronavirus-act-today-or-people-will-die-f4d3d9cd99ca

But Hubei is a province of 60 million people. Wuhan alone has more than 10 million. Although it’s arguable that the Chinese authorities could have reduced the scope of the outbreak by acting more quickly, Wuhan wasn’t shut down until the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases there was increasing by 400 a day. If Aotearoa isn’t even at the point of confirming an average of 1 case per day, which would be 0.5% of the infection rate at which Wuhan was locked down.

      • It depends what models you want to use to fit the data. We have Communist China model, Democratic Western Wolrd Model, Freemarket and so on. Each will give different results over time

In New Zealand it takes us 10 years to build a 600 bed hospital to full operations. In China it takes them 10 days to construct 4000 bed hospitals, could New Zealand achieve those numbers? Could we? No of course we couldn’t. Where would the money come from people will cry! It’s racists against Asians others will cry!

So where China platitudes New Zealand, simply can not.

  11. How can Jacinda give up the great love fest memorial opportunity, that is what she needs to give her oxygen and win the election, or else she will lose it.

    • Marc,

I get that the National Party is your God and you’re still butthurt that another party other than National has the audacity to govern in NZ but do you have to use this site to spew out your misogynistic shit every time you post input? It’s sweet you dislike Ardern and her politics but the level of ignorance you display here about the woman is bewildering. Surely, your head can’t be that far up your own arse?

      • Ignorant comment by an ignorant person, once again, the name reveals blind faith and bias, not common sense, I reckon.

National my ‘God’? Hah, what a laugh, bring out more nonsense, I have the popcorn ready, after panic buying it.

  12. Michelle what the hell has your comment to do with the subject corona virus.Damn all.
I dont often agree with Bradbury but
I totally agree what he has said this time.

    • For the last 12 years give or take a few the government has had to run austerity budgets so banks can have a prime lending environment. Yknow people don’t borrow as much if the government is running adequate services. That’s why quarantine requirements and public health services are backed up way before you consider the effects of corona and people with corona have to fend for themselves (self quarantine) it’s outrages.

      • Some facts would be good Sam. Self quarantine is the accepted way to contain the virus spread and is used round the World. I have relatives in Melbourne and UK and both have friends who are staying at home due to the possibility of illness. If anyone feels they have Corona they can get help by calling the authorities. I do not have much faith in Labour but to date they have made the right moves in containment with no new cases for 4 days

  13. Are there any new hot take tweets from world renowned virologist Nigel Latta? Oh wait he isn’t a virologist? Huh.

  14. Give it time and I am sure Simon Bridges will deem himself an expert on even pandemics.

If there is one thing I just cannot stand about a politician is when he or she deems themselves to be expert at EVERYTHING and has an answer for EVERYTHING. Simon Bridges and National fit all too comfortably into that arena of being KNOW-IT-ALLs but I am sure they would behave with their usual behaviour if it happened under their watch. That is they would deny there is a Coronavirus. Refuse to accept there is a Coronavirus and if taken into a corner will naturally blame everyone else but themselves. It’s their(Nationls’) modus operandi.

The Coronavirus will certainly be interesting and I said at work today that I hope to goodness no-one in any of the Rest Homes around the country will get it because that would be devastating on everyone especially the more vulnerable elderly population.

Just I hope not one political party or politician(and wannabe politician)will try to make the Coronavirus a political matter because that would really demean that politician and the political party they hark from.

  15. ISRAEL IS ONTO IT/ NZ IS NOT

As of two days ago anybody visiting Israel will be placed in formal security quarantine for two weeks before entering the general population .HELLO !
Generally I consider Prime Minister” Betton Yahoo “a total total moron but for once I completely agree with him .

Every medical academic , virologist , epidemiologist, I have heard on RNZ for the last two weeks has said the best protection of a population is by formal secure and medically supervised quarantine for new arrivals .

Is the govt listening , no .Its still air travel close to normal with a health pamphlet and big happy gatherings planned for the weekend .

I don’t know the total number of travelers entering the country but RNZ has said we have around 6000 from Australia every day so the risk becomes higher and higher as more countries contract the virus . 114 at last count.

Airliners which were previously magic carpets to a world of dreams are now flying virus incubation tubes importing hell . But when you arrive in NZ you can do as you please , even though you may be contagious with no outward symptoms . Yeah that will work .

It looks like Labour are juggling corporate profits ahead of the safety of its citizens .

I’m with “Betten Yahoo ” . Come to see us .Every body stays in supervised isolation for two weeks . If your clear , have a nice visit . If you can’t be bothered waiting ,don’t come .You can still buy a ticket on Air NZ.You can still enjoy the country .

Three weeks from now when we have community transmission , silent transfer ,a clinical pandemic iceberg ,we all are shit scared , the supermarkets are emptied, the hospitals are overun ,and you are contemplating your mortality , you may wish to reflect on this post why didn’t we follow the Israelis .

Because they are smart , and we are not .

Think it can’t happen here ? Take a look at whats happened in Italy in just two weeks .

Call me old fashion but I still believe that keeping all our citizens safe ,alive and well until we have a vaccine is more important than some random foreigners holiday .

No more PR candyfloss ,Lets get real .

  16. They don’t want it.

I wish people would respect the wishes of the people who were affected, the Muslim community. And I wish they would stop banging on about other forms of discrimination in relation to what happened.

Politicizing this tragedy for party political reasons, or to advocate for social change, especially by vested interests, is diabolical.

Come on, people, show some respect. If you want to show that you are not racist or anti-Islam, first and foremost respect the wishes of the Muslims who were targeted, please.
