Abortion Law reform passes second reading – well done Parliament

Abortion law reform passes next parliamentary hurdle comfortably

A bill that would remove abortion from the Crimes Act and scrap the legal test for the procedure in pregnancies earlier than 20 weeks is one step closer to becoming law.

The Abortion Legislation Bill passed its second reading in Parliament in a conscience vote late tonight, with 81 votes in favour and 39 votes opposing, narrower than the 94 to 23 margin at the first reading last year.

Very powerful and raw debates in the second reading of the Abortion Bill last night in Parliament.

I salute those Politicians who have to listen to the bullshit arguments mounted by those voting against this reform. I personally throw up in the back of my throat a little when I hear a woman argue against abortion reform.

An abortion is a decision between a woman and her Dr and no one else. If a woman wants an abortion, she should have it at no cost and with all the wrap around services she requires emotionally.

Jan Logie was the stand out last night. Her calm logic and genuine passion was impossible to ignore. Her point that this reform was the only way to ensure early abortions occurred as opposed to late term abortions was utterly convincing.

Yes, the 20week restriction is not perfect, but this is a damned sight better than where we are currently.

This is our Democracy at its best.

Let’s get this law passed ASAP so the sisters don’t have to tolerate this belittling and purposely difficult process any longer.

  1. “An abortion is a decision between a woman and her Dr and no one else.”

    Precisely.

“Yes, the 20week restriction is not perfect, but this is a damned sight better than where we are currently.”

Yup. We’re getting there. I’d have preferred no restrictions at all. But this is better than no change.

And please, NZF: no referendum! Pollies are elected as our representatives: to govern. Remember? That means having the courage to pass such laws. Stop with trying to put that trip on the voters.

  2. As I tried to point out long long ago, there was NOTHING wrong with the way things stood, and it always was easy enough to obtain an abortion. I know myself from personal experience.
How come tens of thousands abortions are performed annually anyway? Was that figure not high enough for your liking?
NOW , this change in law will allow “abortion” to take place up to FULL TERM pregnancy. That is the sole purpose of the change in law. This has already been happening in USA.
Does it make you feel good that from now on full term babies will be allowed to be killed ?
    Utterly disgraceful.

  3. financial hardship can and has bn used as a reason for having an abortion and this can be attributed to a disjointed and alienating society in which nz can be. Aotearoa has an arduous journey ahead.
switzerland has the lowest rate of abortions in the world and failed contraception makes up 2/3 of those.
