ACT’s Free Speech stance hits hypocrisy turbulence

ACT: Sexism on campus is fine, principled drug and abortion policy is not

ACT’s Free Speech stance risks generating political relevance for the first time and creating run away 3%+ result which would see a National-ACT Government.

That strategy has hit hypocrisy turbulence this week however as David Seymour cracks down on the youth wing he forgot his Party owns when they announced a very valid drug policy that would see acid, magic mushrooms and MDMA legalised.

Seymour holds Epsom thanks in part to the conservative vote there, he can’t be seen promoting real libertarian policy on drugs, which is the reason he is so quiet on cannabis reform, so he has threatened to shut down Youth ACT if they keep being principled.

It’s funny watching a free speech champion threaten his youth arm from alienating his conservative Epsom vote.

This hypocrisy is the best attack line the Left will have in trying to blunt ACTs free speech stance.

“Oh you support free speech but when it’s your own youth wing embarrassing you over decriminalisation of drugs you want them to shut up”.

  1. Martyn, you are spot on. Look at what Seymour said about free speech. You will have to scroll down a bit.

So, to those who follow him blindly without actually thinking through the issues or seeing him for what he is and the nonsense of his rhetoric, he exhorts the notion of free speech yet in effect will deny you that right in practice if it does not accord with his own narrative.

  2. see -more also openly promotes people having choices (yet he is against dope smoking) he is also promotes less government intervention (yet he wants to pass a law to force doctors to put people to sleep when they are trained to save lives) Then we have his is charter schools policy he says this is about choice( tell that to Maori who have had an English curriculum shoved down their throats for 100 plus years) And what about his freedom of speech rhetoric supporting divisive foreign speakers coming here to NZ to shit stir and feed into our nasty far right gutless bullshit who are running around shooting innocent people in the back. And then we have his support for gun owners a move to be noticed and relevant at a time when our police force are acting like mod squads inciting gangs and others to fight fire with fire by arming themselves. To add to this his unwavering support for euthanasia all show he is a fucken hypocrite of the highest order who needs to be booted out of parliament and the sooner the better.

  7. Martyn you summed up perfectly my thoughts after witnessing this on television last night.Freedom of speech is only relevant if you can gain political bounty from it. His freedom of speech and anti gun law stance is no more than political vote scoring. To watch him state he would pull the pin on his youth wing is astonishing but not suprising.

  8. The way I see it Seymour is not condemning the message just the fact it is being done under the banner of the party he represents. He is smart enough to know that those inclined to vote ACT are not the type who want to open the door to more drugs.

  9. Nice try Martyn but any fool can tell you free speech doesn’t include the right to use ACT’s trade mark. That is our property and we have the right to set conditions on its use. In any case they are still using ACT’s name and promoting their policy so…

    • Normally this drugs stuff would be a 4Chan thing but The Daily Blog is the least poisonous political comments section of them all. Stay awesome people!

    • Mr Seymour,

The new Kiwisaver rules will prohibit investing in companies making illegal weapons such as land mines and cluster bombs, and also from investing in fossil fuel companies. This would take effect in 2021.

Our Retirement Commissioner, Jane Wrightson, supports these changes. She has said that a recent survey shows around three quarters of KiwiSaver members would prefer ethical investment.

Yet I understand that you, Mr Seymour, have talked down these changes. I am concerned that you seem to be prepared to allow pressures from vested interests to override ethical decisions.

    • Also, free speech issues require a state actor in the mix. This, despite the optics, is a matter between private parties.

  10. Sorry folks about the repeats it was not my intentions I get this message ‘ slow down you are posting too fast’ and nek minute the texts appears hours later multiple times.
