  1. A thought to keep thinking about. To get out of our present morass, should we not look for handholds to climb our own way back up to firm ground instead of relying on technology, machines to come and do a make-do rescue that leaves us confused and only partially recovered to stability and good systems? Hillary and Tensing conquered Everest – we, in their steps must conquer our mountain of bluff leading to a culture of double-dealing!

I was looking up Plato and Socrates this morning to remind me of what they were about. They seemed to have some good ideas, on which some of our systems are founded. And I read about the Socratic way of seeking sense and truth from questions and answers. That would cut down a lot of meeting verbiage, and sales pitch from commercial interests ‘We’re here to help you’ types. And something interesting happened –
In 399 BC, Socrates went on trial and was subsequently found guilty of both corrupting the minds of the youth of Athens and of impiety (asebeia, “not believing in the gods of the state”), and as a punishment sentenced to death… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socrates#Socrates_as_a_philosopher/
(Corrupting the young – possibly introducing the idea that they should try thinking for themselves and then putting questions to the powers-that-be.)

The Socratic method – (also known as method of Elenchus, elenctic method, or Socratic debate), is a form of cooperative argumentative dialogue between individuals, based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to draw out ideas and underlying presuppositions.
It is named after the Classical Greek philosopher Socrates and is introduced by him in Plato’s Theaetetus as midwifery (maieutics) because it is employed to bring out definitions implicit in the interlocutors’ beliefs, or to help them further their understanding.

Slavoj Zizek – The celebrated “leftist” “philosopher” is a racist and reactionary whose intellectual product is worthless. The Left should have nothing to do with him. is Thomas Moller-Nielsen being ironic, outspoken, what: https://www.currentaffairs.org/2019/10/what-is-zizek-for

  3. I’m interested in the tone of this Radionz news piece on the Wellington film makers and the Wellington Council. While overseas people get to do largely what they want, a top NZ business person who has actually created stellar business and work and interest in this country through making something, not just selling property, gets the hoity-toity from RNZ (Radionz not Railways nz). And stellar does not mean making rockets for the USA and PPP war and defence operators which is hailed as something great; greatly putting us on the firing line for one of those amazing V134s or whatever – a continuation of WW2 flying V2s arms development.

The Wellington City Council is refusing to kowtow to demands from film-makers Sir Peter Jackson and Dame Fran Walsh over the contentious Shelly Bay development.
