And it’s here…

New Zealand confirms case of Covid-19 coronavirus

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has confirmed a suspected case of Covid-19 coronavirus is positive.

She said the person was a permanent resident of New Zealand who had recently been in Iran.

Director-General of Health, Ashley Bloomfield, said the person arrived this week from Iran, where the virus had been rapidly spreading.

…the need to shut borders from places the virus is now rapidly appearing in is more essential than ever.

This didn’t age well…

  1. A lot has changed in the 3 weeks since Nigel Latta said what he said. It’s a little unfair to critique him for that.
None of us are sure what will happen with Covid-19, but we are all going to find out.
    Good luck to all.

    • It’s not unfair to critique idiots like Nigal Latta with his bizarre tweet.

Any one that thinks potential pandemics should be business as usual and trying to stop a deathly virus from spreading around the world, is racist, is the stupid one!

    • Well is it any wonder when politicians who push austerity and run the place down and run the place down and run the place down then along comes Nigel saying you’re concerns are rascist/fascist ideology I hate you know I hate you more BS.

    • The tone of the comment is ULTRA condescending though. “all you racist idiots”? Jebus, if you want to alienate every normal common sense person and drive them to vote ACT/National, be sure to include “all you racist idiots” in your Tweets. Nigel Latta is a NZ PR disaster – no wonder he was an adviser for John Key.

  2. and good 2 c Jacinda telling scomo where to stik his deportees policy .. showing clearly she will speak out against any unwanted foreign advances , as well as say – china for example.

    • Well I’m learning more and more to trust my gut instincts,… there’s been a few who’ve said he was an adviser to Jonkey. I didn’t like him when he first made appearances on TV as a successor to Ian Grant , and I sure as blazes like him less now after hearing that !

He struck me as creepy then , now I know why.

Ian Grant , by contrast , struck me as a good family man. Ive met him several times. Humble. Transparent. Caring. Honest. No agenda but family health.

  3. Told him where to stick it…so we wont be getting anymore deportees now? Yeah thought so. Australia does not care and Ardern has achieved nothing.

You’re Likely to Get the Coronavirus

Most cases are not life-threatening, which is also what makes the virus a historic challenge to contain.

“The more the world enters lockdown and self-preservation mode, the more difficult it could be to soberly assess risk and effectively distribute tools, from vaccines and respirator masks to food and hand soap.

Italy, Iran, and South Korea are now among the countries reporting quickly growing numbers of detected COVID-19 infections. Many countries have responded with containment attempts, despite the dubious efficacy and inherent harms of China’s historically unprecedented crackdown. Certain containment measures will be appropriate, but widely banning travel, closing down cities, and hoarding resources are not realistic solutions for an outbreak that lasts years. All of these measures come with risks of their own. Ultimately some pandemic responses will require opening borders, not closing them. At some point the expectation that any area will escape effects of COVID-19 must be abandoned: The disease must be seen as everyone’s problem.”

Each epidemic is also different, and each is a mirror that reflects the society it affects. In the new coronavirus, we see a world that is more connected than ever by international travel, but that has also succumbed to growing isolationism and xenophobia. We see a time when scientific research and the demand for news, the spread of misinformation and the spread of a virus, all happen at a relentless, blistering pace. The new crisis is very much the kind of epidemic we should expect, given the state of the world in 2020.

…..and to some of the TDB contributors: as time passes by, and in the light of the unforeseen but always possible, please give up making this a Chinese issue, or creating these silly associations to migrants.

Drawing the right lessons is of utmost importance.

  5. no doubt will rage thru impoverished , africa , iran , ect. if NZ can competently deal with this , it may show confidence in still being able to operate international trade on a scale of sorts. because as “the thunderdome of talkback” revealed , closing the borders and not being able to supply meds and food to the country may cost more lives than what it would the 1% mortality rate of covid – 19.
so stock up , and remember folks you heard it here first on – TDB.

  6. Hordes of people were in the supermarket on Friday night, stocking up for their feared need to self isolate, I suppose. Hysteria everywhere, people act like morons and lack common sense.

  7. This is barely the tip of the iceberg, wait until infections by persons who got in from various places without checks, and without self isolating, will become more evident.

  8. Great (sarcasm) to see the world bank making money for investors off pandemic bond products that don’t pay out in the interests of victims of pandemics…

“World Bank’s $500m pandemic scheme accused of ‘waiting for people to die’
Bonds designed to provide fast funding for poor countries branded ‘obscene’ because of complex payout criteria”

  9. No matter which news source you read about on the Coronavirus, they all comment that one of the key factors is communication…. The more the better and the more accurate it is even better still. Even prime minister Sudden says so ……. So why is the PC brigade, including her continuing to refuse to identify male or female ! What difference does it make ?except to make it more confusing ? Instead d saying him or her ( bearing in mind most already know through word of mouth ! ) They have to keep referring to “they” or ” the person ” it’s all about silly….. What’s that all about ????

    • “they” or ” the person ” it’s all about silly….. What’s that all about ???

Might be a next-of-kin thing? In case “they” don’t make it…
(I don’t know, but “they” are in the age group that are more likely to get hit hard and fast by this virus-thing, I think?)
