Creepy Santa sacked: Auckland’s giant festive figure to be scrapped after six decades on Queen St

This Christmas will be the last for Auckland’s giant “creepy” Santa.

For about six decades, the 18-metre festive icon has towered over downtown Auckland each December.

But storing, maintaining and assembling Mr Claus cost too much – more than $200,000 per year – so Heart of the City said it was a “fitting time” for him to take a “well-earned rest”.

What Heart of the City aren’t acknowledging is that they are actually responding to an Action Station petition promoted by The Spinoff to ban Santa from Auckland because he represents the privileged heteronormative white cis male patriarchy.

The petition reads,

“Santa is a colonial abuser who has exploited capitalism with slave elf labour using a work environment that lacks diversity. His patriarchal entitlement to land on any house he likes is an extension of male privilege and Christian bigotry. Mary Claus is also a victim.”

Santa has denied allegations against him from former female employees.

Action Station have called for an enormous festive naked Gaia to be erected on the side of Whitcoulls to celebrate non-binary female energy.

Heart of Auckland are considering costs.

  1. Farmers creepy Santa is actually a very “Bad Santa” indeed. He is an aesthetic tragedy, in degenerated condition, decades past any kind of credible public display.

And essentially–“Bad Santa” is all about “jingle tills”–filling the bank accounts of retailers and suppliers and importers, via purchases of crap no one really needs, and many cannot afford. People stress out over pressure to be a good consumer, when at the height of summer a good old chill out is way more appropriate.

  2. Sorry kids, our city is now run on the reliance of growth of billions of people’s traditions, not our own traditions!

“The downtown business association Heart of the City said the annual cost of erecting and dismantling Santa and his reindeer ran to around $170,000 on top of other costs that made his future unsustainable.”

“To grow Auckland’s tourism industry in a sustainable way, Mr Armitage told Newsroom ATEED is interested in events that are gaining more popularity each year, such as the Pride Parade, Chinese Lantern Festival and Diwali.

“The Auckland Pride Parade is continuing to see solid growth in terms of attendance at the parade and attracting visitors from outside of Auckland which we believe also has good potential to expand further,” he said.

The Santa Parade, on the other hand, is a “one-off event that takes place over a few hours on one weekend a year and is not really targeted to attract people in from out of the city, it’s more about allowing local residents the opportunity to celebrate Christmas”.

    • Savenz: “The Auckland Pride Parade is continuing to see solid growth in terms of attendance…”

Is this right? I’d got the impression that the woke left’s shenanigans had caused attendance to plummet, at least for the most recent event.

      • D’EsterreHa Ha, you are right that was before the Pride Parade numbers were decimated, by the woke!

But when has a council funded organisation like ATEED been right about or predicting anything correctly!

I guess just tell the Maori and Pakeha and Pacific Island kids that they are a minority in Auckland now celebrating Xmas on 25 December, and therefore the traditions of Christmas don’t matter to Auckland Council and cohorts getting ratepayer cash as they are not expected to be a growth market in Auckland.

It’s infuriating. To (maybe slightly mis)quote Oscar Wilde, obviously Heart of the City is an organisation which knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.

  3. “…an Action Station petition promoted by The Spinoff to ban Santa from Auckland because he represents the privileged heteronormative white cis male patriarchy.”

Hahaha! When I think of some of the wacky stuff Action Station used to inflict on me via e-mail, it could so easily be true.

I’m sad that Santa will no longer be seen in Queen St. He’s part of my heritage: it’s a loss for all of us.

  4. Ooh er I never knew. I thought Santa Claus represented kindly older figures bringing fun and surprises and a present and that Christmas and Santa Claus were the one sure good thing in life every year. But now we opened the bottle and let the genie out of ‘being different’ and everything that people wanted to be different from has to change apparently. Now no-one knows who they are or how to be while they are being.

And stopping fireworks would be of value to society. But Santa Claus, I can remember leaving a piece of cake on a special plate and there were always some crumbs left to show he had been. What a bunch of overbearing rigid uptight sick-minded spoilsports ripping all the lovely fantasies of Santa.
