  1. Free carbon credits for the biggest polluters from overseas and many whom make huge profits.

“A Stuff analysis has found just four companies have received the vast majority of free credits given out under the scheme thus far. They are likely to continue being the scheme’s primary beneficiaries.

Three are subsidiaries of overseas corporations, all of which make handsome annual profits. The four companies have already received credits worth hundreds of millions of dollars since 2010.

Among them is Rio Tinto, which is given millions of free credits a year for its aluminium smelter at Tiwai Point. Last year, Rio Tinto reported a net profit of $21b. It has since said it may close the smelter down, but if it was to continue operating and keep production at current levels, it would be subsidised to the tune of $1b by 2030.

The largest recipient of free credits has been Australia’s BlueScope Steel, which owns the Glenbrook Steel Mill south of Auckland. It has received credits worth $172m since 2010.

Another is Methanex, a Canadian company that owns methanol production plants in Taranaki, and the last is New Zealand’s Fletcher Building, which gets credits for its cement plant at Golden Bay.

Around 200 companies in total have been given free industrial credits in the last decade, but fewer than 20 have received credits worth more than $1m. The top four have been given 75 per cent of all free credits.

The cost of the free credits will quickly add up. ”
