  1. The Government’s prison reforms

Hōkai Rangi aims to reduce the incidence of Maori incarceration.

Under the programme, prisoners will get more visits from whānau and prison staff will be provided with extra training to ensure prisoners are treated with dignity.

It’s hard to see how these two announced initiatives will reduce the incidence of Maori incarceration.

First off, it’s targeted at those already in prison, and not those that may potentially end up in prison.

And secondly, they (the two announced initiatives) merely sound like the are making prisons more accommodating and inviting.

There is nothing in these two announced initiatives to help prevent Maori from being incarcerated.

    • +1 The Chairman

Getting rid of this would help the harsher sentencing of Maori.

This type of ethnic stereotyping increases the incidence of harsher or ligher sentences based on ethnicity which should NOT be allowed to be a factor in sentencing. I can’t believe the woke and human rights types are not all over this, apart from it seems to be a practical way to stop racism and human rights abuses!

However it does have benefits for neoliberalism and migrants getting lighter sentences so maybe why this is exempt!

aka migrants get light sentences because up until Rogernomics it was hard to migrate to NZ and so only very high standards of migrants came here who did not get into criminal behaviour (so they would have a low likelihood of recidivism) , whereas post Rogernomics criminals from overseas are encouraged to come and live in NZ and are repeat offenders. but based on previous offending statistics now get off or get special treatment from our justice system based on out dated data!

      • Thanks, saveNZ.

Yes, I’m very dubious of the increasing use of artificial intelligence in the decision making process. And how they somewhat conceal but fail to remove bias.

  2. Adding value

I see Tarrant’s manifesto is for sale online now, supposedly an overseas seller. The PM’s heart was in the right place restricting this material (researchers apparently need to apply for access through Chief Censor), society doesn’t need any more written or filmed or actuated hate: we’re all full up thanks. I can’t help but feel though that a Streisand rather than a Jacinda effect may have taken place here; now even more people want to view the contents, through increased awareness or curiosity, to middle finger the establishment, or whatever. Instead of a chilling effect, censorship may have created an economic ripple effect.

This document though has no value other than being an archival footnote, if that. Human life is a true miracle, biology through conception and adaptation exceptional. The human body has adapted over millions of painstaking years, billions of cells work in unison every day inside us. The brain is the most complex and powerful computer in the universe. For someone to take another person’s life, let alone more than fifty, is beyond words. The value of one life is priceless. But now we have this guy’s scribblings for sale on a message board, as if this has value? And this guy and his ilk want to threaten the lives of innocent, defenceless communities, what just because they can? 4 billion years of evolution creating enlightened civilisations and we have this infected pus to show for it? Unhinged murderers, and that includes our governments who drop the bombs everyday, do not have a place on this Earth. Their words have no value, and they have no value.

  3. I think labour are now starting to get worried and so they should be with the up rise of our Maori people who are fed up with all the bullshit, lies and broken promise not just from labour but the whole fucken lot, yes i might be a labour voter at the moment but if they need a kick up the bum I will say it. The TOW is being tramped on and has been for the last 150 years and there is always some group apologising saying they wont do it again, whatever its been ongoing and will continue until we stop it and we can and we must. I agree with what has been said above it will take a lot more than niceties to reduce Maori prison rates it will take a wholesale change in the justice system something very hard to change this sector is a colonial dinosaur and we live in a very racist colonial country.
