  1. Jehan Cassinara on TVNZ Breakfast this morning: Migration is not to blame for the housing crisis, and to say otherwise is dog whistling. Total woke rubbish, every Tom, Dick and Harry has moved here in recent years and they expect a place to live. A net annual migration rate of >50000 is obviously the problem. Why should we be building houses in this country for those thinking about moving here, especially those whose access is based on wealth, those with easier access to low interest loans, and those migrants from countries where New Zealanders cannot buy land? I think Jehan is getting a bit paranoid, playing the race card when this is an issue of population and supply. No we need to turn the migration tap right down before housing can be addressed. No doing so is akin to a plumber working on appliance lines while the gas is still flowing. Ridiculous. We also need to grow the people we already have in this country including growing better TV hosts.

    • Totally correct Jody, I guess people use magical thinking to think that the 33,000 people who gained permanent residency last year and the 250,000 work visas given out alone last year, is not effecting housing! Where are they all living????

Even if just the massive haul of migrants from last year, lived 4 to a house, then that alone is 70,750 new houses needed… and we are building a fraction of that, and it is for speculative investors for profits not housing, and many of the types of people we are bringing into NZ have little money and become full of debts, have no income aka satellite families or unemployed people piggybacking off a work permit, so they can’t afford a house.

All these people compete with NZ poor and working poor and middle class. Even the rich ones coming in like the Russian billionaire seem to be doing more damage than good! Aka tanking local business like Waiwera pools while taking NZ’s best builders for years with mega palaces he doesn’t even live in!

It is so crazy, no wonder NZ is having so much trouble keeping normal people in this country there is glass ceiling everywhere for local talent which is not fostered at all, in particular with all the overseas weirdos getting positions of power around the country aka Gabriel Makhlouf types think tanking with the Kiwi Rogernomics morons, to promote ludicrous immigration levels, stupid policies, aka bringing in people who have low skills, low wages, are not working at all, aka overseas kids and aged parents, billionaires and unemployed spouses and relatives piggy backing off a laughable work permit or investment visa of a cafe.

Someone needs to ask the rogernomics types, why after 30 years of economic experimentation in NZ, that we have still low productivity, falling innovation and practically every measure from our 30 year neobiberal experiment decreasing in terms of benefits to society aka less domestic adults in tertiary education… less health spend per person, increasing prison populations, more depression and suicides.

Many of the people coming into NZ are fakes and engage in criminal behaviour here. Our immigration policy seems to welcome all and sundry and surprise surprise, normal migrants ain’t keen to come to NZ and work a low waged job, so we are getting the dross immigrants.

      https://www.odt.co.nz/news/national/chch-uber-driver-sentenced-rape-passenger

The above guy from the Phillipines just gone prosecuted for rape.

He comes in as a ‘carpenter’ then also works as an uber driver (where he just was sentences to 6 years in prison for rape) and can bring his family with him into NZ.

Even if the ‘carpenter’ job was real and paid at market level, if all these migrants are working 2 jobs then you have to wonder what the level of work performance is, as a carpenter…. if he gets injured though tiredness than ACC on behalf of NZ taxpayers has to pick up the tab…

His family are also allowed into NZ, also needing jobs, health, education and all the social necessities that coming with a family.

Time to stop migrants being bought in with a low wage job and in particular freeze all the family members who seem to piggy back with them.

Wait at least 10 years before giving residency, non resident spouses have to wait 10 years to gain residency (by which time most will be divorced as the state of most marriages these days) and don’t let criminals in with fake paperwork and to a low waged job, because once here if they start resorting to criminal actions and preying on Kiwis, it takes a lot of work and a lot of money and a lot of time to deport them!

      • Also on the topic of the rape conviction. Most rapes are not reported and also very little chance of getting a prosecuting as it becomes about whether it is ‘consensual’ or not.

In this above case, judging by the article it is clear the lady in question was too drunk to give consent and there were witnesses to that level who called her the uber, so it was one of the few that managed to get a conviction.

In spite of that, no doubt it will be dragged into more and more court time as he goes for appeal etc.

If you work out how much support will be given to the rape victim versus how much support will be given to the rapist (all his legal and court time for his multiple appeals, not just criminal then the deportation etc, the lawyers will be hovering like flies to honey on this lucrative case, that they will try and get to go on for years, then the appeals for his family etc, etc to stay poor them, blah, blah,)

So there will be masses of resources thrown at the rapist and his family, who will probably end up costing millions out of the NZ justice system if you work out his jail time, legal aid, deportation etc, the family who will probably get a lot of support because in NZ, we love to support criminal migrants or a new way to get residency is to be a migrant who is the victim of a crime and then the family should be able to get residency both ways…. while the rape victim will probably get a few sessions of ACC counselling and then be told to get over it. She is also likely to be re victimised by being dragged into all the appeals, etc.

You also have to wonder how many similar crimes are going on in NZ, that are not even prosecuted?

We already see all the fake jobs/marriages crimes, the frauds and the drugs crimes, things like rape, are even less likely to be reported, because of what it does to the victims.

  2. This is an incredible story of survival, that luckily turned out well in OZ!

    https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=12253552&ref=clavis

It is incredibly important that NZ funds rescue helicopters (at present they seem to be funded a lot from donations just like NZ ambulances) and they need to be funded to go out as quickly as possible.

If you add in tourists and immigration, then there is nearly double the NZ population in a given year, but my guess is the government funding has not doubled for services!

Minutes can be the difference between life and death, aka the little boy was minutes away from death before being rescued.
