Christine Rankin lashes out at Oranga Tamariki uplift critics

Children are the only important part of the story about babies uplifted by the state, former Work and Income CEO Christine Rankin says.

Rankin, who previously campaigned for the Conservative Party, told The AM Show she had been very involved with families such as the one recently featured in a video posted to Newsroom.co.nz.

When the only person rushing to support the Wellington Twitteratti defending Oranga Tamariki workers is head of Slytherin House, Christine Rankin, you might want to take some time out from your white middle class Wellington witchy feminist queer aesthetic to notice you are on the wrong side of history.

This argument being pushed by some Unionist Left Comrades that we shouldn’t attack the poor unionised workers at Oranga Tamariki because they’re following orders &’ job security’ means jack shit to those in the gig economy.

Your job security to enact spiteful social policy means nothing to us.

The 2016 policy is deeply flawed. Using big data as a predictor is punishing parents for future crimes, it stops parents using legal aid to fight uplifts, it uses secret evidence from a streamlined phone system that judges its success by the increased number of uplifts.

We know children in state care are more likely to be abused than if left with their parents.

We know that the independent oversight isn’t there and the Minister only signed off on some ideas that haven’t been implemented a year ago.

We know that the Ministry for Vulnerable Children was a simplistic neoliberal solution to the complexity of poverty and child abuse. Focusing on rescuing children from environments that big data predict are abusive rather than the wrap around services a whanau requires to keep their child is a cost cutting measure.

And unionised social workers complying with this terribly flawed policy want a  fucking round of applause and a big card that reads ‘not all heroes wear capes’ do they?

If Christine Rankin is defending Oranga Tamariki, it’s time to burn Oranga Tamariki to the ground.

  1. Rankin is a hard right winger simple as that.

She is a toxic heartless sad excuse for a human being since she destoyed many who were needing help after being thrown on the scrap heap after loosing their livelyhood and sought help but was refuded assistance at her agency when she ran the Ministry of Social Development’s ‘work and income’ agency.

Christine rankin would make an excellent partner for John Key to continue to rort and finally destroy NZ as we knew it.

    • Another lazy armchair column writer. If you got off your bum and got yourself an interview with anyone who works at the coalface of child abuse in NZ you would be writing a very different story. But as they say – Don’t let fact get in the way of a story!’ Whatever you think of Christine Rankin she has been at the coalface of child abuse. Time for media commentator to play the ball not the man. What is the background of the young woman that OT and the courts would see it imperitive to remove the child? If she couldnt be trusted to look after her baby tell us why OT and the courts felt the family wasnt capable too. Can you get those answers for us?

      • If you’d bothered to watch the Newsroom account of this affair you wouldn’t need to ask some else to get out of their armchair so as to provide you with answers.
Then you may have greater insight into the unwholesome foul practices at the coalface of the Rankin creature.

        • Another armchair critic talking poop. What are your solutions then? Ahem, nothing I hear, oh well it is only the most vulnerable children in out society who will suffer from doing nothing. Don’t just rely on Newsroom (right wing / neoliberal news) to critique Oranga Tamariki – get some critical brains for yourself and provide some insight – go on – I dare ya!

      • how dare you say that christine rankin has been at the coalface of child abuse – the mothers of these children, in the main, are the only ones who have been at the coalface of child abuse because when the mother is abused, the child is also just by witnessing it – you know nothing whatsoever about what goes on domestically in these situations so you can just stfu

  2. Christine Rankin was once my boss and the boss of many other staff in the government department she was in charge of.

To be honest the woman is a twit. She would wear short skirts, low cut blouses, dangly ear-rings and her pet word was “Passionate”.

She was just as much use as tit on a bull.

  3. Dear sweet Jesus Christ!
Where’s my psychologist’s phone number? What’s the word, or the name of the condition for when one’s aroused AND revolted in the same breath? I’m telling my penis!NO! Don’t you fucking dare! No! No!
Her earrings attract UFO’s, her sneering mouth-hole can only gust spite and spiders and yet…! Rower!
What’s more! Those thoughts are exactly what’s going on in the reptilian brain parts of the guy she’s clinging to. Just look at his face!? Ba haha aha ! One more close-in fly-by, by the Black Witch and he’ll turn inside out then explode over the band.
I’m spending the day thinking about dead kittens and my old, deceased Aunt’s yellow toenails. ( Ahhh…. that’s better. )

  4. This closet human Rankin belongs to a previous era, that of fire, brimstone, witch hunts and torture devices. She is the genetic end product and poster girl of everything wrong with society: sociopathic capitalism, hypocritical neoconservatism, sadistic nepotism, the crawling over the backs of the masses to get to the middle. No she has done enough damage, probably setting back social progress in this country by years.

  5. I hadn’t realised Bet Lynch was on Dancing With the Stars. Thank Christ I missed that!
Give me a warning will ya when Kerry and Rex are due to appear. I’ll try and make sure Australasias Mega Store have a few nurses uniforms in stock

  6. Oh, and btw……how is it that ‘demographic profiling’ regarding immigration policy is not OK (WHICH IT ISN’T), yet it is in OT?
Others have provided good analysis on colonial attitudes prevalent in many of our gummint agencies. With OT comes a degree of cargo cultism. Provide the natives with a few treats and trinkets and let them carry out the dirty work.
And I think Tracey Martin really needs to rethink this through again. Unfortunately public service capture has now become an art form

  7. Oranga Tamariki has obviously made a few mistakes and should be asked to adjust it’s practices but how about writing an article detailing how many children are treated in hospital every week from abuse and show that this is only the tip of the horrible iceberg. I understand that a lot of this abuse comes from insufficient resources and degradation. Instead of screaming about Oranga Tamariki you should be driving a conversation about what we can do to change what is happening in the chaotic lives that are creating all this abuse.

    • I agree with this, and therefore I guess the underlying principle of Rankin’s quoted remark: Regardless of any justified criticism/rage at the failed system and alleged psychopaths in charge of it, the most pressingly important conversation is what can we do starting today to effect meaningful change and offer our tamariki, and their whanau, the means to the brighter future the spindoctors promote.

    • which abuse state abuse, church/priest abuse, child abuse , domestic abuse, abuse of power there so much abuse

  8. matthew the herald writes those types of stories regularly to justify the bullshit behaviour, racist practises and discrimination many Maori have had to put up with from many state agencies including our governments whose policies hurt the very people they are suppose to be helping. Unless you have had dealings with some of these mongrels you don’t know what it is like. Cyfs is the most hated department they got worse in the last 9 yrs under national but were bad before hand and they should not be using our Maori name. I have documented everything names included, times, area called, dates etc and issue discussed with all my dealings with them. Why? because i don’t trust some of them and i want them to be gone ASAP.
