Giving his memorial sermon in Hagely Park, just one week on from the attack on two Christchurch mosques last Friday, Imam Gamal Fouda spoke these words to a huge crowd assembled in Hagley Park.

Like many of you I am still deeply saddend by the dispicable act of hatred and violence that happened last week in the city where I grew up and went to University

50 people murdered and 42 injured in a few short minutes in our peaceful country…. just awful.

But today, as I watched on TV the thousands upon thousands of Kiwis who gathered to observe a 2 minutes silence in remembrance of the victims ( with so many women wearing headscarves in a display of solidarity with their Moslem sisters) I felt incredibly proud of our little nation.

Because our message to last week’s terrorist as he sits in his prison cell is loud and clear.

“If you sought to divide us by your dispicable act you failed. You cannot divide us and we will not live in fear from the likes of you .. because we are One…
