Pike River Mine conspiracy fears only getting stronger

Here is the picture of the evidence that disappeared. It’s the cover from a switch cabinet that was in the mine and was not intrinsically safe. It was photographed on the 28th of November 2010 after it was blown up the vent shaft and landed on the ground above the mine.

The thing I never understood about the Pike River Mine tragedy was the indecent haste with which the National Party wanted to seal over the entrance with concrete meaning we could never get to the bottom of the who, what, why and where of this atrocity.

No worker in NZ should not come home to their loved ones, and the manner in which the safety here  was deregulated and ignored was a blight on us all.

The niggling doubt that there was a cover up and that the National Government had decided to help in that cover up has always been at the periphery of the family tragedy and suffering.

When Labour, the Greens and NZ First all took it upon themselves to lead the decision making process  to re-enter the mine, that was the first moment anyone in Government went seeking real justice.

So what on earth are we to make of this latest twist that crucial evidence has just suddenly gone ‘missing’…

Pike families shocked by missing evidence

Pike River families are shocked that vital evidence was lost during the initial investigation of the Pike River mine explosion.

A picture of the evidence – an electrical cabinet that was blown to the mine surface – has just come to light, however nobody has been able to say where the actual item has gone.

Sonya Rockhouse lost her son Ben in the mine and describes the lost evidence as immensely disturbing. “A lot of the electrical equipment in the mine wasn’t designed to be in a mine, it was incredibly unsafe, now we’ve found out that one of these unsafe cabinets was blown to the surface and it disappeared onto a helicopter leased by the Pike River Mine company.

“It’s bloody outrageous and it shows exactly why we need to go back into Pike and why we need a proper investigation. I don’t think any New Zealander wants to live in a country where 29 men die like this and then critical evidence disappears.”

Bernie Monk whose son Michael died in the mine explosion is angry this has taken so long to come to light. “This is crook. Someone knew that incredibly important evidence had turned up and somebody knows what happened to it. Whoever that is needs to come forward right now because we’re not stopping until we uncover the truth.”

Anna Osborne’s husband Milton lost his life at Pike. She says police will be taking this very seriously. “What I want to know is why did the company responsible for the unsafe mine have their hands on evidence like this? All I can say is it’s a good thing we fought so hard for reentry and re-investigation, because with each day it’s clear there’s more that New Zealand needs to know.”

…John Campbell has said it best…

…not only do we need to re-enter this mine, we need to re-enter the whole bloody investigation, because the sudden disappearance of a piece of evidence that would tell us where the real blame lies is atrocious.

  1. Went to a Hazardous Substances Course a few years ago and the Lecturer explained his thoughts on what had happened at Pike River, obviously he was close to the mark.

    • Still, mining is one of those industries where you learn electrical engineering in a nice class room with all the gear. Then out in the field when you don’t have access to Bunnings, all you’ve got is a fuse from a 1980 Toyota. It’s not a fix you’d show your mates back home but it don’t kill no one and gets the job done. it’s not an excuse but bush fixes is the only way to make production targets.

  2. It was always an obvious cover up to any one that was paying attention. The whole site is a crime a scene and it needs to be treated as such. I think it’s going to be pretty obvious that at least some of the miners likely survived the first explosion, and were left to die due to inaction by the Government: obviously a very bad look for the great saviour The John Key at the time. The families of the victims should of course be able to sue for compensation, but imo certain actors (including Key) are personally responsible in some capacity for the deaths and should be prosecuted as such.

  3. Aussie mining company, Key conspiracy to subvert the course of Justice, Nothing unusual there, if he wasn’t fingering someones pony tail he was doing dirty backroom deals to line his own pockets.
Royal Commission into this and other frauds perpetrated by this banking cartel mobster badly needs investigated.

  4. Let us not forget that instead of putting experienced mine personnel in charge after the blast, a country cop calling wellington for instructions was appointed. Call me a conspiracy theorist if you like, but it is my opinion that there is a lot more ass covering going on here than than meets the eye.
