Based on NZ Herald coverage, who knew the 4 Horseman of the Apocalypse would actually be riding Lime Scooters?

Who woulda thunk a Czech drug smugglers and lime scooters would dominate the news cycle in a way environmental apocalypse, China buying MPs and state house meth hysteria couldn’t?

If only the National Party were as vigorous in their research of state house meth hysteria as they are of Czech extasy dealers.

It’s embarrassing how public debate can revolve around a Czech extasy dealer and not Chinese interests trying to buy 2 National Party MPs.

In the NZ Herald there were 7 news stories on the IPCC report, compare that with over 25 news stories for those fucking Lime Scooters. It really says something about us as a people when electric scooters can generate far more attention than the end of the planet as we know it and a Czech extasy dealer can create more debate than a star housing meth hysteria that cost $120million, threw 900 beneficiaries onto the street and removed children from families.

PS – China has now encroached into Niue and are attempting to take the Cook Islands. But you know, Czech dealers and Lime Scooters.

  1. Only the equivalent of 16 Auckland houses to buy an entire nation. I in the United States corporations buy politicians for a mere few hundred thousands

  2. Had the pleasure of visiting Tāmaki makau-rau/Auckland this weekend.

Expected to see crazed Lime scooter riders with meth-fuelled blood lust in their eyes brandishing jousting sticks to skewer old people with and beheading small children with broadswords as they raced around the footpaths at 30kph.

But no. It was not to be.

Sorry some of you folks have to live there btw.
If it’s any consolation, sea level rise and superstorms will probably deal to the place within a lifetime or two. The rest of NZ will follow in short order.

  3. “It really says something about us as a people when electric scooters can generate far more attention than the end of the planet as we know it ”

    It makes perfect sense:
    1. The lime scooters are an issue to AKers right now, the climate isn’t.
    2. The lime scooters are directly actionable by AKers, the climate isn’t.

NZ can’t do dick shit about the climate given our 0.1% contribution (if indeed there is anything to be done regardless) without unified international cooperation, of which there is none.

    • Presumably, as far as you are concerned, the correct response to rising sea levels is to carry on squandering resources building infrastructure that will soon be under water; the correct response to worsening climate that threaten our safety in the short term and our lives in the long term is to make it worse faster; the correct response to resource depletion is to use up resources quickly and leave nothing for the next generation; the correct response to loss of biodiversity that threatens to bring down the biosphere is to ignore it; the correct response to ocean acidification that threatens to make the oceans unrecognisable and eliminate life as we know it is to keep pumping CO2 into them.

There was a time when people made a stand for what was right and got supported for doing so. In the consumeristic world of modern NZ such people get vilified.

The good news is that the consumer society will be down the drain in less than a decade; the bad news is it has done so much damage recovery is impossible.

      407 ppm and rising
