In 10 years time when climate change is killing people by the tens of millions in the third world, NZ will be the target of endless waves of desperate boat people. Initially we will be kind and considerate but when the pressure becomes too much we will close the border and do what Australia has done.
In 20 years time California will be a desert, global power will have shifted to Russia and China, and we will be a Chinese lackey and holiday destination for the super rich. We will be one of China’s many breadbasket (or rice bowl) client states. The USA will continue to have internal struggles & retrench its over extended military back to North & South America.
In 40 years time, We will hit the hard ecological limits to human population growth. Mass extinctions, plagues, piracy, rogue nations desperate to survive. The end of globalisation and mass production. Retreat of humanity into heavily militarised city states. Resource wars and catastrophic weather events, then who the fuck knows.

No one can predict the future accurately but I think you are being overly optimistic there. The generally accepted tipping point for planetary meltdown is the loss of summer sea ice in the Arctic, since that will cause incoming radiation to be absorbed much more than at present, and will cause much faster warming of the waters of the Arctic region, since none will be involved in phase change (the latent heat of ice to water) and all the heat energy will manifest as raised temperature.
We have seen what approximately 410 ppm atmospheric CO2 does. And it’s pretty bad.
Well, in 10 years time it will be around 430 ppm if we are lucky. That will be 200 ppm above the last 800,000-year average.
And in 20 years time it will be around 450 ppm if we are lucky. That will be almost twice the 800,000-year average.

You’re not taking into account methane which is far worse than CO2 and already off the charts. There are a whole host of factors – the earth is an interconnected system.

I agree, Pikachu. Methane has a very high warming potential compared to CO2 (over 100 times that of CO2 for time scales that matter), and the concentration in the atmosphere is rising.
Should there be a major eruption of methane from seabed methane clathrates or from warming permafrost, the effect would be to compress the time scale for planetary meltdown.

From my reading of quite a lot of research, the sun determines Earth’s climate – not human beings. The sun at present is “sleeping” = sans sun spots.
I think that enriched-by-Lies Gore sold the Earth’s population a “pup”.
The variation in solar output is around 1 part in 1365 over a cycle, whereas the deviation of the CO2 from the historic norm is over 40% (and rising). So it’s obvious it must be the sun and not the CO2 that is causing overheating…yeah right! That’s real logical thinking

By the way, if we DO want to talk reality, how about the effect of aerosols generated by industrial activity which are to some extent causing incoming radiation to be reflected back into space and masking the full effect of the CO2. And what the effect of the inevitable decline in industrial activity (due to civilisation crashing) will be on those aerosols and the heat that reaches the ground.

The only temperature that really matters is the average temperature of the oceans, as pointed out previously on numerous occasions. And the temperature (heat content) of the oceans has not been higher in recorded history.

The science opinion on solar variability was formulated in the 1980’s and the IPCC hasnt deviated from this. Problem is since then there have been lots of satellites launched into space to observe the sun and earth which has resulted in a far more accurate understanding of how the sun affects the earths climate. No. I joined the Greens before the 1996 election and have campaigned on the issue of global warming in the past (as well as other issues), but over time realised the global warming rhetoric does not match reality. You may find this hard to believe, but I am actually trying to save the Greens from themselves.

When I lived in Berlin in the eighties & nineties I began to see NZ much like some of my colonial ancestors must have imagined it to be; a kind of Utopian island paradise far removed from the rural poverty & industrial squalour of their homelands. Of course I knew the real negative realities of the place, but seeing my homeland from a distance through rose tinted glasses, a certain idealism about NZ becoming the future saviour of humanity began to creep in. Since those times I began to envision; the eventual emergence of a visionary, trail blazing, more localised & independent safe haven NZ which; by taking a stand against the prevailing winds of our time & evolving an exemplary post-globalisation way of life, would enable some of us on our beautiful planet to survive the fast approaching apocalypse. Unfortunately I’ve been extremely disappointed by our increasingly rapid slide in the opposite direction, so like many of you I’m almost at the end of my tether. Let’s call it the broken down old idealist voice in the wilderness syndrome for want of a better explanation, sad but true.

I think it is more likely that the Labour and Greens will have a popular mandate for more extreme action, rather than then being overthrown by some new political party.
