Paedophile village: Residents urged to stay calm, give prison a chance to explain
Upper Hutt Mayor Wayne Guppy has called for calm after it was revealed a child sex offender village had been set up in the city, north of Wellington.
The plan to host up to 11 paedophiles within the grounds – but outside the wire – at Rimutaka Prison has drawn ire from the local community who became aware of the situation earlier this week.
Guppy, who was first notified of the facility’s existence “mid-week” understood the community’s concerns but urged residents to be patient and listen to what the Department of Corrections had to say.
Let’s be honest about New Zealand’s ‘Paedophile village’ shall we?
I warn you though, you are going to hate the answers.
First of all, why the Christ is this being called a ‘Paedophile village’? It immediately scares the living bejesus out of locals and sets the nation at unease. It suggests a malignant tumour of a community that must be treated with the same mercy as you treat cancer, i.e. none at all.
‘Paedophile village’ is the very worst of the mainstream media selling clickbait.
Why not call it ‘Utter-failure-of-social-policy village’? Because that is truly what this represents.
Since the parole changes, prisoners can’t get out early and before they can access any rehabilitation at all, they must agree to work in slave labour and they must admit their crimes.
For sex criminals this is beyond difficult to do, because they are in denial and seeing as they are in prison for a long time anyway, they dig their heels in and admit nothing.
Because we fail to appreciate how the parole changes have created an unintended consequence of prisoners cutting their own noses off despite their faces, we now have for the first time in criminal history, sex offenders who have served their entire sentence with no rehabilitation whatsoever.
What does that mean?
It means the prisons are releasing sex offenders who have served entire sentences spending 22 hours per day locked up with no rehabilitation whatsoever.
So what is Corrections response to this total and utter failure when it comes to sex offenders?
Why they have forced Government to pass laws that allow for open ended sentences to continue well after the prisoner has been released, and to cope with the enormous number of sex offenders who have served their full time with no rehabilitation whatsoever, they are building community housing on prison grounds to house these prisoners.
Gone is the time when we said, ‘do the crime, serve the time’, now we have open ended life sentences placed upon prisoners who have served their time and are now simply under life long surveillance. These prisoners on the prison grounds have to be tagged every time they leave, they have limited freedoms and have to agree to stunted lives, yet they have served their time.
We are building onsite housing for prisoners because the actual time spent in prison has destroyed these men and not rehabilitated them and even after they have served their time they are forced to live heavily redacted lives. Add to this the total lack of support for prisoners on release and we have a prison industrial complex that not only builds the prisons to punish and cause suffering, they are also now becoming the landlords to those men too damaged by the prison experience to ever be trusted back in the community.
This is the true horror of the prison industrial complex muddle Nu Zilind has so willingly built, men more damaged than when they go on, living forever under the power of the state because the state knows the shit job they have done to rehabilitate them in the first place.
This is the very definition of a failed social policy.
Sadly, none of this truth is revealed by the media referring to them as ‘Paedophile villages’ and so muddle Nu Zilind can escape being confronted with the counter productive clusterfuck they have demanded be built.
The main issue is that it’s an intolerable risk of repeat offence. I’m all for rehabilitation, and once again in the perfect world that’s what the justice system would do for everyone, even for the most horrific crimes. But there’s no guarantee of it in our present system, and repeat offence for these kinds of things is fairly common (for one thing many paedophiles readily admit they have little control over their urge). Paedophilia is a crime which is so abhorrent it’s not worth putting the risk out there again.
What would the experts do, brainwash them? I think labour duties somewhere secluded and dangerous. Oil drilling at sea maybe, sewage management, submarine cleaner, preist.
I think killing would be a waste, ‘death of personality’ and being made to do our tougher jobs is better. Set up housing blocks for them so they can all live together and supply them basic food/water cheaply out of their wages of which also pays for their building and victim compensation. And they’ll be happy about it all too. Might even consider prisoners and general poulation prisoners for early release, maybe. Victims get a bit of cash, free up some prison space. I’m just thinking out allowed.
You can also if they are later found innocent, revert their personality back and pay them some compensation.
Maybe more thinking out not so loud would give us all a break from some of the self important, try hard drivel that surfaces here.

You’ve asked some terribly complex question that doesn’t have an easy answer.
I don’t want to go too much into this, but in order to give something of an appropriate reason for why I would propose certain solutions I’ll give you some data.
Sex offenders have the lowest rate of recidivism for any form of offender. Pedophiles have roughly the same rate of recidivism as any other sex offender.
Thus, the recidivism issue is moot – the vast majority of offenders don’t reoffend. Around 3.5% of convicted sex offenders will be arrested and reimprisoned for a sex crime. Of those that reoffend, most tend to be of particular types.
“and once again in the perfect world”.. Absolutist drivel… There is no such thing as a perfect world… but to condemn people to a lifetime of purgatory because there was no effort made to try to teach them how to deal with their obsessions in a rational way is simply barbarism…

Having read accounts written by people who have recognised their predilection towards children, and have made the conscious decision to either avoid contact with them, or simply resist any, and all urges toward acting on those, I can say that, while there will always be those who havn’t the will to resist whatever antisocial, or harmful behavior they are disposed toward, the majority of offenders are more than capable of rehabilitation…
In a “perfect world” there would be no serial murderers, rapists, or pedophiles created, or triggered by the unhealthy environment caused by large sections of the community clinging to reactionary conservative politics, and philosophies…
The utter failure to recognise that the self absorbed, and selfish attitudes promoted by the descendants of the ruling elites has created a n abnormal, and unhealthy lack of social awareness of the consequences of abhorrent behavior….
The old ways of covering up the ugly truth, and saddling the victim with the guilt have been proven to exacerbate the problems, and simply create the next generation of abusers….
Education, and i mean realistic education on the effects this behavior has on the whole lives of victims is only one method that has been shown to minimise this abuse… There are many ways to teach those who cannot block out, or move past their drives to abuse children…
A lifetime of punishment, and isolation will simply mean that the number of people who will be deemed “irredeemable” will only grow with each generation…
People aren’t cattle… Treating them as such will only create an unmanageable burden on future generations… Remember the words “be careful what you wish for, as you may get it” apply here…

One of the reasons I chose what I chose is because mandatory, grisly sentences give paedophiles extra incentive to kill whoever they molest. Just need to engage brain.

Yes, Andrew, there are effective programmes out there. Just as there are addiction programmes for alcohol, drugs, etc. You just need to look past your inner prejudices and look at the wider world.

These men have been locked up for their entire sentence, 22 hours per day with no rehabilitation and they are so damaged, we can’t dare release them into the community.
What if they had intensive counselling for that entire time in an environment they could learn in?
What if there was a genuine attempt to rehabilitate rather than lip service?
You want to lock offenders up for a long time, sweet, but surely we should attempt to rehabilitate them while they ar inside?
Without that option prepare to pay more and more of your taxes on ever growing villages of damaged men.

It is delusional to think that “intensive counselling” could magically turn these people into safe adults around children. The first principle must be the PROTECTION OF OUR CHILDREN; the rights of pedophiles must NEVER trump that abiding principle. Read the stories of what these evil men have done, and weep.
I think it is far more delusional to create a system where people are more damaged when they come out than when they go in.
When I was younger, and I had female friends that were raped, I used to rage that convicted rapists should have their balls cut off. Mind you, when I was younger than that, I remember asking my Dad why we didn’t just kill people convicted of murder, rather than spending public money keeping them imprisoned for life. But it’s easy to propose final solutions to complex problems when the people you’re talking about are “The Cruminalds(TM)”, faceless people who were born evil and will die evil, just like the baddies in the movies.
I know two men who are convicted pedophiles. Both of them are also alcoholics, and I suspect this is not just a coincidence. I know that at least one of them is also a survivor of being raped by at least one pedophile when he was a child, which doesn’t for a split second justify what he’s done to others, but if we’re talking about action motivated by compassion for victims, does that compassion switch just flip to ‘off’ when the damage caused by being harmed leads to doing harm?
When people talk about what we as a society ought to do about pedophiles, I don’t think of faceless Criminalds(TM), I think of those men. They are not monsters out of some B-grade horror movie. They are human beings, who have been damaged in some way, and need help to come back to wholeness.
If there are a minority who are unrepentant psychopaths, and likely to re-offend, then sure, there is an argument for life sentences. Or some other form of fulltime, professional supervision. For the rest, counselling, group therapy, perhaps even medication, maybe mindfulness training so they can catch themselves feeling inappropriate urges and cut them off? Solution can be tried out on a case-by-case basis, while they are serving their time, and in some cases, this is exactly what’s happening. For some, perhaps improving their confidence (and thus their self-control) by engaging them in work they find meaningful? One of the men I mentioned above did regular work while in prison, did something of value with his days, and learned useful skills, both practical and life skills.
Imagine it was your brother, or your grandad, or your best friend, who was exposed as a pedophile. How would you want society to treat them?
Your alternative is they get parole unconditionally (without serving their full sentence) and if they want to, then leave their arranged/assisted residence in the community to get rehab as and when they choose or not …
The church tried this approach, forgiven and moved to new locations away from their former victims.

Unfortunately in my family two boys were victims of a male adult relative. We tried to handle it within the family and I don’t think the adult male (now dead) did it again. It was 40 years ago and the boy closest to the perpetrator is still damaged. It worries me that in protecting the paedophile we didn’t do enough to look after the boy. I think now that perhaps shaming the person who has hurt a child would help the rehabilitation of that child.
well i like rehab etc for most things but murder rape and kiddy feckers its a different story…..a bullet costs 30 cents……do the crime no more time…finito………when the govt cannot have enough money for what society needs these feckers get the bullet…..not 100’s of thousands spent in her majesties hotel and rehab….
