Following the win on plastic bags, Greenpeace is gearing up to issue a significant new challenge to Government on plastics.

“The ban on single-use plastic bags was a huge win for the oceans and for people power, but we’re not satisfied yet. Plastic bags are just the tip of the plastic pollution iceberg, New Zealand needs to go much further,” says Emily Hunter, Greenpeace NZ oceans campaigner.

The environmental campaigning organisation will host an event in Auckland on Wednesday along with several other groups to lay down a challenge to the Labour-led Government to do more on plastics.

Joining the announcement are, Tyla Nathan-Wong (Olympic women’s rugby player) and Jamie McDell (award winning guitarist and singer-songwriter).

“One of the things I love and enjoy doing is spending time with my family on a hot summer’s day at the beach,” said Tyla Nathan-Wong. “However, what I don’t like seeing is plastic mixed amongst the sand or floating in the ocean. It is harmful to the environment and wildlife. The ban on plastic bags is a good first step, so let’s keep heading in that direction.”

Accompanying the event will be a giant sand sculpture and a look at some of the top sources of plastic pollution.
