I had a productive session this week with Prison Inspector Jason Eakins regarding some recent issues I raised with the Inspectorate . He said the Waikeria pound would no longer be used for Minimum & Low Security inmates .

Also , Waikeria visitors with approved property forms will now be able to drop off the items during their visits , rather than being required to mail them. This is a “common sense” issue & I’,m glad the Inspectorate is taking such issues on board now .

We will shortly be getting additional cable TV channels too – such as Choice , Bravo & Duke, also Has the penny finally dropped?

“33% of all 40 year old New Zealand men & 50% of Maori & Pacifica men have a criminal conviction . Are we a criminal country or just overly punitive?”

Arthur Taylor is TDBs Prisoner Rights blogger currently inside Prison.

  1. Go get them Arthur, The west-north wing in Waikeria is a Guantanamo style prison that amounts to inhumane conditions and the serious assaults by prison officers and inmates should warrant a commission of enquiry of how these crimes have been swept under the carpet. The belief that Paremoremo is the most dangerous prison in NZ haven’t spent time in Waikeria high security units.
