Migrant groups welcome new immigration changes
The Union Network of Migrants (UNEMIG) and Indian Workers Association (IWA) welcome the new immigration changes announced today.
We made submissions on behalf of migrants and requested migrants to also do the same. We are glad that the government has listened to the most vulnerable voices and made further changes in line with our submissions to ensure current migrants can benefit from these much needed changes.
Coordinator of UNEMIG and IWA, Mandeep Bela, says, the network’s members are glad to see that the Immigration Minister took their submissions seriously.
“Not only migrant groups will be pleased with this but also all workers and good employers in New Zealand. These changes will ensure that unscrupulous employers will not be able to undermine good employers, exploit international students and wages and conditions for all New Zealanders.”
He does point out further changes will need to be made to ensure New Zealand is a safe country for all immigrants.
“However, more work will need to be done on the essential skills visa or RSE visa for example, to make it easier for immigrants to switch employers should they find themselves being exploited. Offshore education agents should also be regulated through a stronger connection between governments to ensure they are not selling false dreams and misleading international students.”
