The funniest thing about Police killing teenagers in car chases is how furiously defensive Muddle Nu Zilind gets when you point this out.

Our bizarre unquestioning support of any level of force by the NZ Police to quell rowdy Māāāoris is a deep cultural hang up that I suspect comes from our colonial settler days.

There has always been an unwritten rule between white NZ and the Cops that we will politely look the other way while they use any level of force to bash Māori. Our setter forefathers and foremothers would get nervous after dark at the natives hanging around the edge of the settlements and that fear meant we’d agree to any action by those we called in to defend us.

What most white New Zealanders don’t know about their police force is that they were originally the bash the Maori squad, that their origins were as a militia to attack Maori in Taranaki and the Central North Island.

The NZ Police force had its origins in violence against Maori and some things have never changed.

So deep is this cultural cringe to turn a blind eye to any level of force used against Maori that any criticism towards Police provokes an immediate rage in white NZers who see such questioning of the Police on par with literally pissing on an All Blacks jersey.

Look at the unbelievable way people are trying to defend the cop who punched a 13 year old handcuffed kid who was arrested for not wearing a bike helmet yesterday. All manner of bullshit excuses have been cooked up to defend the cops actions, if you think punching a handcuffed 13 year old kid in the kidneys is the best response to rowdy teens causing trouble then maybe you are the problem?

Let me say this slowly for my white friends…

If.

Social.

Policy.

Ends.

Up.

Killing.

People.

That.

Social.

Policy.

Is.

Bad.

Got that? Social Policy that kills = bad.

Our chase policy is deeply flawed, screaming, ‘respect my authority’ isn’t a response to criticism of that chase policy.

Unfortunately nothing changes because it’s brown young people who mostly die, and it will only change the second white middle class kids get killed, and when that moment comes oh Lordy Lordy will there be a feral cry from middle NZ for change.

That’s because this is us, this is who we are.

  1. I Agree totally.
Car chases that Kill are an Abomination, a stain on the country as a whole. The hue and cry should be huge. 2 Children killed for what? A f***ing car. The Muted response makes sick to my stomach. Surely the population is not that cold and inured.
I dread my Son getting to that age, and sometimes you just can’t stop them. Their brains are not fully developed, they are headstrong, full of hormones, selectively deaf, 10 foot tall, and bulletproof.
Like we all were at that age. We did the same things then as they do now, just slower. We stole cars, we drank, smoked pot, went out, had fun. And I never even heard of a police chase for a stolen car until I was nearly 40 years old.

Why when and how did we ever get to a chase them till they crash mentality in the Police? How many more need to die before this mentality is changed?

Then that vicious assault on another child by someone who fell flat on his face got laughed at, and reacted with Violence.
Is this the sort of Police we want?
That would takes back to the 70’s and 80’s.

    • Yes about the time of the dawn raids, What was that policeman’s name he became a politician. Then of course that was the rise of John Banks from Whangarei Mayor to Parliament. That’s when this culture started. Americanisation of Policing, the goodies and the baddies.

    • David H Perhaps you had an inhouse male parent or a good light beyond your youthful stupidity.

Perhaps you had an inkling of right from wrong.
It may even operate today and you can sense just how annoyed you’d be if some juvenile entitled nicked your wheels (two or four) and it came back beyond repair – months later. I know from your fun attitude you’d love the extra costs, inconvenience, and dragging your shopping home on the bus – if there is one for your area.

You may even applaud the squeal of wheels at odd hours, ripping past your house, and requiring total vigilance for all you hold dearest.

You might even be an ambulance chaser who dashes after to gawp at the mangled vehicles, the blood and cries, the ruined lives, and those caught up, like that 12 year old, in that boyish hedonistic Moment just before lives changed for the worst possible.

Perhaps you have noticed how the great anti-smacking amendment has led to a clutch of kids and their parents who weren’t actively taught the alternatives for better social behaviour.

And the disappearance of community police who knew the little villains in the community; watched, noticed, stepped in early.

Now? The little treasure who wrecked three lives – well, it wasn’t his first joyride, was it? A misguided youth, according to his family.

A 90 second visual request by traffic police to pull over and explain why he was over the speed limit, was in breach of conditions, and why he had passengers at all, didn’t kill the kid. Neither did ignorance – because he already knew the system – the same one that dozens of other ethnicities manage to live with without resort to bizarre stories.

Every every every ethnic group has bad little buggers. From palest to darkest. It’s a human thing – not ‘racist’.

Time for much deeper thinking – once the knees have finished jerking.

      • Excellent response Andrea. I most admit though, Martin is always balanced when he writes articles on Police, dead teenage criminals, P smoking tenants etc, he is well balanced because he has a huge chip on both shoulders.

    • agree with you David H and would like to add those were the days when our police returned you home and your parents either gave you a hiding or you were severely punished (the police didn’t have to do anything your parents did it) Mind you nowadays some kids don’t have a home or parents.

  2. And the young 13 year old that was slammed by the cops? Some of the comments are pretty disgusting ie he should learn to do as he’s told etc etc.
Cops responses present their skewered perception which makes them look like they are always right, the injured party. And muddle NZ claps and cheers at how safe we are because of our cops. Makes you wonder alright. And as a Māori I know NZ is as racist as F..k! Always has been, always will be.

    • Wasn’t that a white kid and a Maori cop hit him? not sure where you are going here to claim racism.

    • He is dead right in this comment. The abhorrent amount of systemic racism against non Maori in NZ isnt seen anywere else in the world and the political racism and racist attitude shown by some of our leaders isnt tolerated anywhere but here.

  4. Okay

So every body in New Zealand is a Racist –
    Except Maori.

We haven’t got time of day to waste with that nonsense.

Why then do you accept New Zealanders endless money ?

  5. Does bomber have any idea how many “white” kids have been killed in pursuits recently? or do cops have some sort of infrared radar that allows them to determine the race of the driver the moment a stolen car races away from them?

  6. hey get a police scanner so you hear what the police go through to chase a car, its very restrictive, many crims get away as they have to stop the chase, they know if they get too 150ks the police have to stop – that part when they are getting up to that speed is where they crash, happens like clock work – after the police have been told to stop. so the media beat up on the cops have made it more dangerous, more deaths. its a game for the crims, like it or not its not thats whats happened – like i said get a police scanner if you are in a area they work and you will get a very different story.
there may be some police state behaviours car chases are not one of them
