Time to take on Oil industry, Tax big sugar, end intensive farming, restrict booze & crack down on pokies

Jacinda has taken some political heat for daring to suggest that the oil industry must one day leave as the realities of climate change raise their ugly malformed and mutated heads.

The response has been predictable and dismal.

The industry gasped they create 11 000 jobs but so what? Even if that number was true, what’s the point of 11 000 jobs today of there aren’t any jobs tomorrow?

Simon Bridges jumped in

National Party leader Simon Bridges said fossil fuels would have to be used, in some form, for at least another 20 years.

…with all due respect to Simon, it doesn’t matter what he has to say now we know he’s are a tame pet for the Oil Industry…

In a statement, Greenpeace says Bridges denied in Parliament about having contact with the oil industry about the Crown Minerals Bill amendment, about protests at sea.

It emerged that Bridges had met with Shell representatives on February 14, Greenpeace’s statement said.

The environmental organisation had asked Bridges to release details of the meeting ”weeks ago”. Details had not been released, Greenpeace said.

…the simple truth is that the Oil Industry not only has to go, we have to fine them heavily before they go.

The Oil Industry has known for decades that their product caused catastrophic climate change and they actively used propaganda to pretend climate change wasn’t to blame the way the tobacco industry used quack science to pretend smoking and cancer weren’t connected.

The Oil Industry need to be hit with damages the way we’ve hit Tobacco companies with damages and these damages should be used to transition completely away from big oil.

I believe Labour will set a ban on any more exploration but they need to go further in class action penalties on the entire industry and this should cascade across other areas as well.

Big sugar must be taxed to help pay for the obesity tsunami it has fuelled in our health sector.

We must end industrial farming and intensive farming practices in NZ to stop environmental damage and to create a product that attracts a better piece for prime product.

We must regulate alcohol far more harshly, replace smoke free pretensions with vaping options and legalise cannabis.

And now we can see how racist pokies are, we must determine to plough those funds back into the communities they are being taken out of.

Jacinda needs to show courage and make some huge calls that put the people first and the not the corporate interests of the vice industries be they oil or booze, sugar or gambling.

Self-regulation is a joke and an excuse to do nothing, Jacinda must ask herself if the State is there to protect  the interests of people or the vice pimps.

  1. Invest in new sustainable green technologies (research) We a have a chance to be world leaders. We need to start to wean ourselves of plastic bags, plastic bottles, petrol and oil. But we need an alternative.

  2. I had the misfortune of watching that sleezy arsehat Bridges this morning on Breakfast where he claims that “business confidence is dropping” since Labour (who everyone now seems to say, including here, is Jacinda). Jack Tame, being a bit clueless as usual, didn’t immediately challenge Bridges about the multitude of global issues that might be affecting said business “confidence” here in NZ a shit load more than “Jacinda”, e.g. Donald Trump’s hopelessly unstable administration, the potential trade wars he’s starting, and the effect these are having on global stock exchanges.

  3. Our news has been dumb down our 7pm current affairs programs no longer exist. I like to watch Marae on Sundays to get a fairer point of view but Mr Morrison needs to learn how to control the interviewees they are pissing all over him or should I say weeing.

    • I have given up on NZ ‘News’ Organisations completely. I now watch CNN and MSNBC just to make sure the Planet will still be here in the morning. And the Moron hasn’t blown it up.

  4. Don’t disagree on the need, but does Jacinda/Labour have the political capital to do this?
Doing all of those things on the list would activate a host of big, powerful enemies. She/they would need a heap of backup to succeed.
Does NZF have the stomach for this? Not even sure the Labour caucus would be up for it.
However, what’s the alternative? Schlep their way (with us) to mediocrity and a doubtful result at the next election and not really deal with anything?

  5. NO SOLIDARITY FOLKS ~ none here ~ there ~ anywhere. Everyone ~ left ~ right ~ centre only out for themselves. Turning our waka around will require nothing short of a A TRULY REVOLUTIONARY GOVERNMENT which won’t be pushed around by banks, big business & foreign interests. Solidarność now>

    • To be honest I am also very interested in the possibility of a truly revolutionary government – it seemed that Winston hinted at it when he made his speech re the coalition decision and rather than constantly rearranging the deck chairs on ‘SS Neo-Liberal Capitalism’ I think its time we have a completely new look at how we structure our entire society . . because what we are doing just isn’t working anymore for progressively more and more people.

  6. So shipping is going to revert to sailing ships. Will be good for our wood industry. And aeroplanes will revert to gliders. Again good for our wood industry. Ambulances will revert to horse and carriage. Again good for our wood industry.

  7. We are standing on the deck of the titanic, watching the last partially filled life raft, hit the water and sink.
And you are standing back and saying maybe if we changed the pitch of the funnels?
410 ppm CO2, and nearly 2 ppm CH4 is end of argument.
Humans can do sweet f all to speed up or slow down what melting ice/CO2 are doing, which is going at there own speed, all we know is that it is faster than expected.
And it will not take much more ice ‘loss’ for the end of human habitat on Earth.
And to confirm this doesn’t get posted.
The only thing that will speed all of this up, is nuclear war, the power plants will meltdown anyway, that’s part of the unavoidable time line we are on.
