‘We Need Courage, Not Hope, to Face Climate Change’

‘We are the lucky ones who suffer little tragedies unmoored from the brutality of history. Our loved ones are taken from us one by one through accident or illness, not wholesale by war or natural disaster. But the scale of climate change engulfs even the most fortunate. There is now no weather we haven’t touched, no wilderness immune from our encroaching pressure. The world we once knew is never coming back.

I have no hope that these changes can be reversed. We are inevitably sending our children to live on an unfamiliar planet. But the opposite of hope is not despair. It is grief. Even while resolving to limit the damage, we can mourn. And here, the sheer scale of the problem provides a perverse comfort: we are in this together. The swiftness of the change, its scale and inevitability, binds us into one, broken hearts trapped together under a warming atmosphere.

We need courage, not hope. Grief, after all, is the cost of being alive. We are all fated to live lives shot through with sadness, and are not worth less for it. Courage is the resolve to do well without the assurance of a happy ending. Little molecules, random in their movement, add together to a coherent whole. Little lives do not. But here we are, together on a planet radiating ever more into space where there is no darkness, only light we cannot see.’

  2. I hear, watch and read the sad stories about how the islands in Tonga, Samoa and Fiji have been hit by recent cyclones. The damage was great, and now they all call on NZ Inc to ‘help’.

I would dare to observe, they fell for a BS dream of a modern day lifestyle, they fell for NZ and AUS tell them, hey, you have to import our great products, ‘to advance’, i.e. our timber and other building products, to build as WE do.

So they relied on that, and their expatriates here, to send money and buy all the timber and products made in NZ Inc and AUS, and build homes like the bungalows they have here in this country.

Oh shock, they did not withstand the gusts of a storm, oh suffering, oh so bad, help us, help us now, same as with corned beef and other imported crap they now rely on, ‘help us’, please Jacinda.

This whole business is a shambles, a BS act committed by NZ Inc and AUS, to lie to the Pacifica people, by telling them, you must become and live like us to ‘progress’, and you will be better off.

The truth is the total opposite, like China and USA, the NZ Inc and Australia have tried all to recolonise the Pacific for their own interests, and hence made them dependent on their products and lifestyles, destroying their security and independence and culture.

The rest is tourism performances, what is left of island ‘culture’, none else.

It is time to acknowledge and accept the damage done to them by false advice from NZ Inc, Aus and others, selling them crap, they do not and should not need, and by making them dependent on us.

Before colonisation homes were built there that withstood storms or could easily and cheaply be rebuilt. Now that no longer happens. Before colonisation they had ways to cope that no longer happens. If any true aid is offered to Tonga, Samoa and other islands, tell them to build in a way that storms do not damage their homes and Parliament, build resistant structures, not stupid NZ made bungalows that are wiped out immediately, and need rebuilding, again by useless imported timber and so, only benefiting NZ business but nobody in the islands.

I am sick of the media NEVER pointing this out, but simply gearing to create ‘compassion’ and tears, to only offer the same useless BS ‘help’ as usual, that is no useful and effective help at all, it is BS.
