Pop-up Globe: A Midsummer Night’s Dream – 5 Stars (Don Brash would scream)

I am a sucker for Shakespeare. I love the plays, the language and the re-interpretation each re-telling can create.

The universality of human experience at the heart of his story telling resonates to this very day and getting to see the plays performed in the original setting of the Globe is one of the greatest ways to access his work so it was with immense joy that I caught the latest season at the Pop-Up Globe with  A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

It’s 5 stars. The atmosphere, the direction, the incredibly talented actors who were so brilliant in bringing the comedy out in this play – it was everything and more. I think I even shed a tear at one point.

The way they turned the band of roving players into modern day tradies was pure beauty and the way they turned the supernatural elements of Puck and Oberon into Māori magicians who only spoke Māori for the entire play was a joyful creation that would have had Don Brash screaming.

If you have never seen Shakespeare, please, please, please, please go and see this. If you are a fan, don’t miss it.
