As the government pushes ahead with its plan to implement a “12 month rule” for migrants, despite heavy criticism from the dairy industry, the organisation representing migrant workers in New Zealand is preparing to release a report on the plight of Filipino workers in the country’s dairy industry.
The Union Network of Migrants (UNEMIG) commissioned a report by former Member of Parliament Sue Bradford exploring why the dairy industry is so dependent on Filipino migrant workers, what the employment and living conditions are like for those workers and how the industry is divided between migrant workers and New Zealand workers.
“We’ve collected stories that will shock New Zealanders,” said UNEMIG co-ordinator Dennis Maga.
The report launch will also coincide with UNEMIG’s 5th birthday.
“There’s a divided labour market in the dairy industry and that harms both migrant workers and New Zealand workers. One thing this report does is recommend ways for overcoming that division and ensuring working people, whether migrants or locals, enjoy decent terms and conditions at work,” said Maga.
