GCSB ‘had no idea’ spy gear was still targeting Kim Dotcom

THE GCSB lost control of its surveillance technology and wasn’t aware its systems continued spying on Kim Dotcom, according to new documents from the spy bureau.

It claimed that it turned off all surveillance systems targeting Dotcom and others but
found out more than a year later that surveillance continued without its knowledge.

The details in the documents have led Dotcom to state that there is now evidence the United States’ National Security Agency was carrying out surveillance on him.

Dotcom, who should have been protected from GCSB surveillance as a New Zealand resident, said the GCSB did not know because its equipment was being used by the NSA, which was “directly involved”.

…so the GCSB are claiming that they thought they had turned their surveillance of Dotcom off when he was arrested when in fact the NSA had remotely reactivated their spying network and continued 2 months of illegal spying???

For fucks sakes folks – the purposely slack internal audits look like they were designed to allow the NSA to do what they liked.

This extraordinary revelation actually highlights every fear we as activists have claimed could occur. This means everything the GCSB is spying on is completely open to the NSA to access as well.

It’s not just Wellington spying on you, when the GCSB spy, Washington can see and use those networks as well, and apparently they can do so without the GCSB even knowing about it – if we are to believe the GCSB’s claim of ignorance.

This is the mass surveillance state doing exactly what activists warned NZers could happen if the mass surveillance law was passed.

    Video is about an hour. Starts out with a timeline of global war effecting each century, 16th/17th/18th century and so on. Then goes on to explain how every bit of a device was invented for military applications and why the private sector I.e Bill Gates, Steve Job ect are cheap sales men for military products then comments.

    There are some home truths in this clip. Some may not like it but we all just have to get over it so we can keep each other safe.

    They knew, I saw that they knew, and I also saw evidence that they were using XKeyscore against other NZ residents well into 2013.

    • Most untrustworthy is GCSB, they are part of the deep state set up to protect only the Government.

      Hope Labour Coalition closes it down.

    recorded and stored and can be accessed at anytime.

      • The nature of what GCSB/NSA does is intercept foreign communications. Naturally analyst are exposed to the contents of domestic communications and that’s with out intercepting domestic communications we already know of, because NZ was/is already intercepting communications US intelligence is interested in. So there is a set of rules that says analysts must delete names, companies, phone numbers, addresses, ect of any domestic citizens with in the geography of intelligence agencies. And if analysts can’t do that then they must destroy all communications. This is the bases for the U.S. Church Pike Hearings 1972. Later known as the Intelligence Community Enterprise Architecture (ICEA, pronounced “eyesight”) this is not for signals intelligence but for intelligence sharing purposes, it is for the NSA, CIA, FBI and others to use and share what they know. And then there is another layer upon that where the US can share Intel with customers so they can send and receive intelligence reports with organisations like the GCSB. So GCSB can in fact talk with analyst so each can ask what did you actually hear, or what did you actually see. With out these checks and balances Intel is useless. The Snowden docs are clear on this.

        Final thought: Intelligence is an important asset for New Zealand and it is a distinguishing asset that should be important to every one of you that New Zealand protects its ability to know. On the other hand all intelligence should be conducted in a lawful manner under supervision and oversight of the Executive/Legislative/Judiciary branches of government. New Zealand has three branches of government who are ALL involved in intelligence, head of GCSB has lunch with court judges, the original blog is clear on that, and that’s just to illustrate that there is oversight. During meetings new technologies and the difficulties integrating new tech and how to manage the detail for privacy and oversight. Heads of spy agencies from all over the world fly into NZ in 400 million dollar aircraft for security reasons just to meet with government officials and opposition officials and judiciary officials for oversight purposes. So in case you read an article in the Herald that says John Car Key said Dotcom doesn’t know or understand what’s going on in the intelligence community, it’s not because John Car Key can’t remember, he can, and he does in meetings on many different occasions. They politicool class for politicool reasons just don’t like to say that they’ve approved something.

        IMO it is very important that New Zealand maintain the exercise over the lawful use of intelligence authorities.

        • Interesting. Because I have a recording between myself and the GCSB, concerning an incident involving them. I recorded that phone call. Later, when requesting my GCSB and SIS file, I received an apparent transcript from the GCSB which differed quite a bit from the recording that still exists.

          My concern, a phone call to the GCSB, concerned their strange behavior around then Muslim friends of mine. I was concerned for their welfare, and was trying to get to the bottom of what the hell they were up to.

          But the transcript I received said that I was complaining that a GCSB officer had stolen my boyfriend (I have this document, besides the recording). Apart from the fact that I have only dated women, the transcript was very odd indeed. It claimed that I called to complain that a VERY senior GCSB/NSA spy had stolen my boyfriend, a Malaysian spy, who I happened to know (though I didn’t realize he was a spy until later on).

          Perhaps I am bisexual… No, sadly. As a hardcore liberal and David Bowie fan and devote of Genet and Burroughs as a teenager, I had a few dalliances in my 20s. I WANTED to be gay, in some respects, or at least bisexual. It befitted my outsider status. But those experiences were not satisfying and I discovered to my disappointment that I was heterosexual.

          That aside, I had a recording of me talking to the GCSB about a certain strange incident that I felt compelled to get involved in (it was forced on me, I didn’t go looking for it – I was worried for my Muslim friends) and it doesn’t quite gel with the transcript I was provided by the GCSB/SIS in their joint response to my Privacy Act request – which, among other things, accused me of having a homosexual relationship with a Malaysian spy who was apparently in a relationship with a former GCSB/NSA operative.

          Childish at best, shockingly evil and manipulative at worst. I think the latter.

          Time for the GCSB/SIS to come out of the closet, methinks.

      • I asked that question because I have a recording I made to the GCSB concerning an incident that put Muslim citizens in danger.

        I have a recording of the conversation with the GCSB.

        Last year, I applied for my SIS/GCSB file and got a joint response.

        Included in that response was a “transcript” from the GCSB agent I spoke to. In that transcript (which I was provided with and still have), I apparently said that I was angry that a VERY SENIOR GCSB/NSA official was having a relationship with a Malaysian spy who the GCSB claimed was my boyfriend – or said that I said he was my boyfriend, in said transcript.

        Now, I recorded that conversation. The fact aside that I was in a relationship with a (muslim) woman at the time, and certainly was not having sex with men on the side (explored that in my 20s, didn’t do it for me), is enough, really, to make that transcript look pretty bogus.

        The fact that I have a recording of the conversation during which I apparently said I was angry that a GCSB spy had stolen by boyfriend – and didn’t, I said nothing of the sort – goes to show that they are serial liars.

        I don’t know why they recording things that way. Maybe the transcriber was on drugs? Because, according to the GCSB, on further inquiry to the GCSB/SIS, they “only take notes” and don’t record phone calls.

        How weird, right?

        So my Privacy Act request basically included a “transcript” from the GCSB” calling me a “faggot” in so many words.

        Look, I don’t care, Jean Genet is one of my great heroes. Many of my Heroes were gays. I wished I was gay for years, but, sadly, it didn’t work out.

        But to receive a “transcript” from the GCSB (taken in pencil, they wanted to have me believe) claiming that I had called them to complain that a senior GCSB operative had stolen my boyfriend was insane! I never said anything of the sort. And I certainly had no interest in screwing the person in question.

        Serial liars. Destroyers of lives, destroyers of careers. They drive people to unemployment, exile, and suicide. Why? For fun?

        I don’t understand them at all.

        • Bugles of the traveler my friend. It’s difficult to explain what that is. But when a civi comes across sensitive material important to to authorities. Minders will plant sexually orientated material to promote reactions of shock so that it broadens further investigation, takes up more time and so minders can create time and space for themselves and there purposes.

          Western intelligence aurthorites tried replicating Stassi tactics all through out the Cold War and they are still shit at it. And don’t put your *tinfoil hat* on just yet. It’s all uncontroversial infomation, there are plenty of declassified US reports out there.

          The thing about conspiracies and secrete club houses, when it starts to dominate the governments budget, you can’t keep it secrete any more.

    • I met one of the original founders of the Pirate Bay on my travels. One of the clever ones, who didn’t get arrested.

      He said Kim was a gamer, and not really much of a hacker.

      Never the less, I support Kim. He’s out for himself; not exactly a Robin Hood. Still, his case exposes the extent to which the deep state determines what happens in NZ. Sovereignty is a joke. Free participation in civil society is a joke. Will the NZ public wake up to this? Doubtful.
