How on earth can Paula Bennett claim National were too slow on Housing?

Paula Bennett’s deceitful claim on the awful AM Show this morning is an audacity too far.

She admitted for the first time that National and been too slow on the housing crisis.

How on earth can she claim that?

How can she claim that National were somehow slow in realising that there was a housing crisis that they were helping create?

For the last bloody 9 years National have been hell bent on throwing as many beneficiaries out of State Housing using any pretence from faulty meth tests to false promises of affordable housing development, all the while thousands of State Houses stand empty and tens of thousands are handed over to corporations for ‘managing’.

National knew there was a housing crisis because they’ve been throwing state tenants out of state houses for almost a decade now to help build that crisis.

It’s almost as if Paula thinks you are so stupid you won’t remember this…

…pretending to be ‘slow’ on the housing crisis would suggest they weren’t aware that they were throwing thousands of state tenants onto the streets to be looked after by the ‘market’. The ‘market’ legitimised boarding house slum lords and helps explain why 1600 NZers die from the cold each year.

National knew there was a housing crisis because their cruel neoliberal social welfare state house privatisation agenda exacerbated the bloody housing crisis.

Where do you think those 41 000 homeless suddenly came from?

We can not allow National to wriggle out of the consequences of their right wing social experiments.

  1. Basically it’s a play for the election. She’s saying “We’re on to it. We’ll definitely sort out after the election.”

    • And anyone who believes that will probably buy this handful of magic beans I have to sell them.

  2. I’m glad you brought this up because I shouted so loudly at the t.v when I heard this load of sanctimonious garbage my neighbour’s must have wondered what the hell was going.
This is the new meme being put out there by National….oh , we might have misjudged things just a little by about 12 to 18 months but hey ,you can’t get everything right all the time can you.
Once again this highlights how bad and dumb and lacking in vision National are.
It’shard to know which has been the dumbest National Party…the Shipley ,Richardson one, or this one..it might be a dead heat….
There were two bright spots in this morning’s show…one was the guy who works at the coal face for helping the homeless and the other was the actress /producer who could not hold back the tears when telling her story about her first visit to a soup kitchen….I mean, she was outstanding with honest compassionate observations…it made that national Party propaganda machine , Mark Richardson, look at the floor in shame and almost had Amanda Gillies in tears.
Basically what she was saying was , there by the grace of God go i….this situation could happen to anyone because as she said ,whilst some of these people have some mental issues , a lot of them look just like you or i and a lot are workiing.
I saw this housing crisis coming about 7 years ago…you didn’t have to be an economic genius to work it out…the key equation is the cost of an average house in relation to income….for a household that now stands at 10 x and for a single person it’s about 17x …..back in the 70’s the figure was 3×.
Add to that the fact that a vast number of houses , especially in Auckland, have been bought up by property cartels from China that either have them lie empty looking for a tax free hassle free financial gain, or are rented out by the room and crammed to maximize profit, quite often in the poorest areas, and a Government that refused to keep any records and you can see why my t.v screen is covered in rotten tomatoes when that most vacuous of politicians Paula Bennett spews forth her mindless garbage…..

    • Thank you! I could not have said that better myself. In fact I am still so bloody angry I still can’t form the words, so again, thank you!

    • Absolutely agree with you, apart from one comment. This government, Richardson’s and Shipley’s, and the Nats in general, are not dumb and never have been. They know exactly what they are doing. It is deliberate.

    • Just have to disagree with one part of your post. Richardson, Shipley, this government, and the Nats in general, are not and never have been dumb. They know exactly what they are doing and they do it on purpose.

      • I understand where you’re coming from, but part of being dumb is doing something on purpose and believing it is actually going to work, when any application of critical thinking , foresight, historical knowledge and logic, to mention just a few measures that must be applied to all decision making , tells you it can’t work long term.
Being a myopic zealot , hell bent on implementing policies that are clearly just nothing more than warped ideologies, shows that they are either plain straight out dumb or they are a sandwich short of a picnic or worst of all psychopaths…..

  3. You forgot to mention the record emigration allowed under National to goose the GDP figures (i.e. show “growth”), putting a further strain on the existing housing stock.

  4. Someone please correct me should I be wrong but in the lead up to the 2008 election didn’t John Key say in a speech about the pending housing crisis:
THis is what I found thanks to Google
    http://www.nzpif.org.nz/news/view/53038
To date we have heard John Key claim there is no housing crisis especially in Auckland. To date we have seen him smirk like a cheshire cat and say it’s all the previous governments’ fault.
But after almost 9 years in government it’s time National did the adult thing and admit they have indeed acted too slowly and MUST take total responsibility for THEIR actions.
I am totally fed up to the back teeth with this government ignoring a problem in the hope the problem(s)just simply disappear over-night. But then a government depends upon apathy and often speak down to NZers as if they(the government)have the monopoly on intelligence.
For National to ‘pretend’ there isn’t a problem(like housing)indicates they are so completely out of touch with reality that they may as well reside on Toilet-free Planet Key.

  5. Maybe it’s all just a misunderstanding by all of us? Remember, ‘they’ mostly live in areas where there are no poor people, and definitely no homeless people obviously. So why should we expect them to know this?

Oh thats right, because they’re the fuck’n government who have all the resources!
Seriously, ‘if’ theres a change of government, there needs to be legislation, an Act introduced where Ministers are personally liable & the penalty is the “Guillotine!” I read somewhere it happened France & it worked, for a while until it wasn’t fun anymore!

  6. Oh ! For God’s sake ! Spare us that photograph? That pillar of gristle, maw gaping… ( Little bit of sick. )

  7. National will simply redefine the word “homeless” in their master copy of the National Directory of English.

  8. Yep, who knew selling off the state houses and leaving them empty would make NZ the highest homeless nation per capita in the OCDE???

The National party and their enablers The Maori Party, Act and United Future are an absolute disgrace!

I’d like to see government manslaughter laws bought in, so that deliberate policy by government that leads to death is prosecutable. Hey, they do it for parents that neglect their children and don’t give them the necessities of life, they prosecute people who kill by accident, the do it for teachers who somehow fail ‘health and safety’, it’s about time that legalisation was bought in to prosecute politicians for preventable deaths on their watch.

And having empty state houses and WINZ turning people away who are entitled to accomodation should be considered a crime answerable by the law, when death or disability comes out of it.

  9. Everyone else new it was a crisis, yet National denied, now this, that they had no idea. May I suggest that as a government “they have no idea”

  10. They’ve been caught out.

    Now they’re scrambling.

Butt-covering; election-year spend-ups; and promises to Do Better are on the agenda.

God help us, but there may be enough gullible fools in this country to believe it.
