This Thursday at 6.30pm Paula Penfold hosts a criminal justice election forum at Auckland University Library Basement, brought to you by JustSpeak.

Law and order is wheeled out every election. But now that we have more people in prison than ever before and plans for another billion dollar prison, will this be another predictable political football? Or, have we reached a turning point in the criminal justice debate?

The Auckland election forum comes hot on the heels of Whiti Te Rā, a kaupapa Māori hui on transforming criminal justice being held right now in Rotorua. There is certainly no shortage of inspiration, experiences and ideas to draw on as we enter the second day. This Thursday the public and politicians will get a chance to hear what came out of this important hui directly from participants.

Kicking off Thursday night’s election forum Julia Whaipooti will be ‘on the couch’ with guests to talk about the realities of living through, and working with, the criminal justice system.

Politicians Jacinda Ardern, Simon O’Connor, Jan Logie, Mahesh Bindra, Damian Light, Geoff Simmons and Elliot Ikilei will then set out their visions for criminal justice this election. This will be followed by a Q&A for members of the public to engage politicians on the issues affecting their communities.

Look out for our Wellington election forum on 27 July at 6.30, Wellington High School, hosted by Max Harris.

Both events will be livestreamed through the JustSpeak NZ Facebook page.
