Todd Barclay Watch: Suddenly Bill English looks vulnerable

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

The Press Gallery are like hyenas, they hunt as a pack.

The media hyperventilation over a backbencher National Party MP breaking the law by secretly recording a staff member like a privileged dickhead has spread to Bill English’s credibility as Leader.

Hilariously this fiasco looks like it will damage the National Party and not the far more damaging abuses of power they committed in Dirty Politics

  • Rodney Hide getting threatened and blackmailed into standing down over lewd text messages.
  • Tobacco, big sugar and booze lobbyists  paying to print articles on Whaleoil and then comment with the most disgusting hateful language aimed at public health activists.
  • Public servants named and crucified for political gain.
  • The Saudi Sheep bribe
  • The constant manipulation of statistics to minimise negative social impacts of Government policy.
  • Jordan Williams smearing Labour Party sex lives on Wikipedia
  • John Key touching a young waitress 10 seperate times at her place of work.
  • Mass surveillance lies
  • Threatening of journalists and journalism.
  • Slater hacking into Labour Party computers with the help of Jason Ede and downloading their entire database including donors.
  • War Crime allegations by the SAS that John Key signed off on.
  • Slater and co plotting to attack the head of the SFO
  • And most damning of all, The PMs Office colluded with the Secret Intelligence Service to manufacture a smear to attack Phil Goff, Leader of the Opposition, months before the 2011 election using a far right hate speech merchant like Slater as the vehicle.

…the Barclay issue is different because the story originated on a small independent news site like Noted. If this scoop had originated on one of the main networks, the other networks would have ignored it, being on Noted has allowed all other networks to use it.

This is becoming more damaging than all the far more serious abuses of power because English is mishandling the issue with indecision. When Key got into trouble, he would go stone cold and flatly deny everything. Bill English on the other hand has looked like a possum in the headlights and that along with the hyperventilation tone from the media is what your average voter is picking up on.

It was something Tracey Watkin commented on in the weekend before this story blew up…

Key soaked up pressure like a huge sponge. In 2014, he sacked cabinet minister Judith Collins on the campaign trail, then resumed a shopping centre walkabout and posed for hundreds of smiling selfies.

Those of us who followed Key through three elections always knew that beneath the affable exterior there was steel.

But 2014 stands out as one of the most relentless and intense four week campaigns ever. Key was a man alone, emerging from the centre of bruising media scrums, a dozen or so journalists and camera’s trained on every word and facial expression, and was rarely – if ever – wrong footed.

English knows all about pressure; he led the party to its worst ever defeat in 2002 after inheriting a divided and toxic caucus. There were some legendary outbursts during that campaign. English was slow to the boil but once he reached tipping point he let you know about it.

Fifteen years on English is a different man and has shown himself up to the pressure of steering an economy through financial and natural disasters.

But unlike Key, his instincts don’t lead him naturally to the right place politically. He is someone who likes to approach issues from every angle first, rather than on the hoof like his predecessor.

The campaign trail is unforgiving of anything that looks like indecisiveness, or of someone losing their rag.

…suddenly Bill English is looking very wobbly and while this sin of Barclay’s pales into insignificance when compared to the PMs Office colluding with the SIS to smear Phil Goff, or the mass surveillance lies, or even the constant touching of a young waitress at her place of work – the unique elements of the source of the story, the pack mentality of the Press Gallery and the total look of indecisiveness on Bill English’s behalf have combined into a cocktail of political poison.

National voters won’t care about Barclay taping someone, what they will care about is Bill English looking weak and feckless.

No wonder Judith Collins was touring the current affairs shows over the weekend, she tastes the blood in the water as well.

  1. New Zealanders keep voting for the same crap, corruption , and bullshit and Key got away with breaking the law so many times it has made a mockery of the rule of law in this country.

I would bet a year’s salary that this government has covered up illegal activity with help from the police and its media friends and supporters that has not made it into the public arena.

Key and his colleagues bought the New Zealand justice system and the voters of this country a long time ago so its a bit rich that the media are putting any effort into the illegal activities of a National MP, its almost become a badge of honour to be able to get away with breaking the law and not suffering the consequences and all it has done is send the message that if you are popular and rich you can BUY political office and do whatever the hell you like.

    • Just another case of “Business as Usual” ethics have gone out the window with New Zealand Politics a long time ago, the problem has been people in NZ have been blinded by MSM who have political agendas and are controlled by their owners the Bankers and the Corporates ?

    • Just another case of “Business as Usual” ethics have gone out the window with New Zealand Politics a long time ago, the problem has been people in NZ have been blinded by MSM who have political agendas and are controlled by their owners the Bankers and the Corporates ?

    • Here here Mosa. Natz summed up perfectly.

Through this National government, corruption has become an art form now. This government is an infestation of filth, a toxic contaminant, courtesy of the scurrilous activities of ministers of the crown and MPs, who should be held to account for their shameful, disgraceful behaviour against the people of NZ!

We deserves much better than what’s being served up at present. Hopefully the much needed change in government will become a reality in September, when we have a duty to uphold, by cleaning out the system.

  2. Yes this government is as bent as a corrugated fastner ,it’s just amazing the latitude and forgiveness given by the populas for what really is unacceptable behavior.
If Todd has any sense of decency he should resign,I actually feel sorry for Bill English covering for this pompous, arrogant shit.
Do the right thing and resign.

    • Just watched the right wing Mark Richardson on T.V. 3 lose all credibility by stating it’s okay for them to tell a little”white lie”. As we know, if it had of been Little and one of his ministers, Richardson would have done his “Block”

Nice to get Whailoil’s take on it?, oh there isn’t anything there.

      • Mark Richardson is well known dork , he’ll say anything to get a audience I can’t be bothered listening to his trolling crap .

  3. why has this born to rule, privileged, entitled, young Nat, tory spiv’s case grabbed public interest when a whole volume of “Dirty Politics” could not?

because events have moved on, and as has been proven time and again, the mass of the peoples thinking often lags behind events–well maybe they just caught up!

more people are having miserable lives and sense the Nat Govt. are behind it, and Blinglish no “sirkey”, he is very much acting PM prone to gaffes and is a silver medalist from a general election with deep down self doubt

  4. Watkins comparing Keys ability to keep lying to being made of steel is fucking outrageous.

He was anything but admirable during the 2014 campaign but because he could bullshit with such seamless ease this got Tracy all giddy.

Her analysis is a symbol of everything that is wrong in our corporate media!

  5. Great analogy Martyn…

” Bill English on the other hand has looked like a possum in the headlights”

That is an admission of guilt.
As many have said, what is the difference between this and the taping of Key and Banks? Why did the police go after this yet after being told by English that there had been a taped recording by Barclay, police said there was insufficient evidence to continue?
Sadly there will be plenty outraged by this but the sheeple and the paid political National voters won’t give a toss! Just ask Mark Richardson.

  6. Look the ACT Party has been in the spotlight over illegal taping in the past and we got through it and are now a pivotal member of the coalition National government.

This is just another bump in the road, like the 2013 Aaron Gilmore ‘faux pas’.

Nothing to see here, move along people.

  7. Bill blinked & his credibilities blown ….somebody will be forced to walk the plank in the next 24hrs.I put money on the Dipshite from Dipton!

Crusha did look rather pleased with herself today in Parliament …Pullah Benefit was looking at the job section of the Dom-Post!

  8. Just to clear things up, before anyone jumps to any conclusions, I am not related to David See-More, nor Aaron Gilmore, nor Todd Barclay – all three of whom I consider to be the most feckless, arrogant representatives of right-wingery this country has ever seen.. .

One thing is clear, no matter what the polls are telling us, that the downtrodden middle, lower and car-dwelling classes of this country, have had enough of austerity, asset and State House sales, immigration to drive wages down and house prices up, young people being in penury for a university education, so much so they will never own a house. Right-wing, neoliberal gobshites think they are entitled to be worshiped and above the law of the land and of decency. Kiwis have had enough of entitled little upstarts, believing they are God’s gift to politics and kiwi humanity.

Bull Unglush got 21% last time he was in power as National leader. National, Crosby Textor and the spin-doctorate are working overtime to try and convince the electorate that Bull Unglush can double his percentages from last time he was leader.

After this utter balls-up with Todd Barclay, Bull will have a hard job of even reaching half of his last leadership percentage.

But, we still have something to look forward to! Judith Collins salivating over her John Key and Bill English and Gerry BrownleeVoodoo dolls.

Roll on Todd falling on his sword to make Bull look strong and decisive, and NO BY-ELECTION.

Win-win for Bull Unglush. Judith will have to wait a few more months until after the election where Bull Unglush had lead National to a loss worse than last time. Bye bye Todd. Bye bye Bull. Welcome back Judith!

  10. Twas a terrible day , yes it twas,
When th’ media was a buzz just because,
    Young Toddles had taped
Some words that did ape ,
His incompetence , spite and his guile,

So in confessing to Bill ,
    He was so advised,
To let all those sleeping dogs lie.
And so with that grand counsel ,
    Carried on his discourse
Thinking that would be that for awhile.

    Unbeknownst to him ,
    The story wore thin,
When the news latched onto a feed
    The land then was filled
    Of collusion with Bill,
And nay story matched up with his deed…

” Oh , – woe is me !” , Todds was heard to lament,
As Bill spake two different tales,
Of one it was said ,
    ”I cannot recall ! ”
    Of the other
”We met face to face in the hall !!!”

    So Toddles was shown,
    With his cover being blown,
His friendship with Bill now was over
    And all that remains,
    Of this sorry refrain
    Is demotion
Like a pig no longer in clover !

  11. “He said Ms Dickson likely received a payout, but he did not know the details. “She’d been a long-standing staff member and it was quite a quick exit, so there would’ve been a package of some sort.

“Employment disputes happen in all workplaces all the time, and I don’t think there’s anything out of the ordinary about an employment settlement taking place”.

Some of the money paid to Ms Dickson is understood to have come from former Prime Minister John Key’s leader’s budget.

    from http://www.noted.co.nz/currently/politics/pm-admits-todd-barclay-told-him-of-recordings/

So Sir John Key, Todd Barclay and Bill English are all donkey-deep in this foul-stenched mess….shaking head unbelievably

  12. Will at least Bill English eventually may be telling the truth as he knows it, John Key would have ridden that lie into the ground and got away with it

  13. What is it with National MP’s whom were or had been associated with senior positions within the the Law and Order Select Committee in Parliament;

First Mike Sabin appointed chairman of the law and order select committee…..resigned from the National party for “personal reasons” whilst allegedly under police investigation.https://www.nbr.co.nz/article/sabin-resigns-parliament-jb-168018

Now Todd Barclay (previous deputy chair of the Law and Order Select Committee when he entered parliament.) http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11879754

Somewhat ironic that the Law and Order Select Committee is tasked within Parliament to look into issues relating to corrections, courts, criminal law, police, and serious fraud.

I hope that National Party’s Bakshi Kanwaljit Singh who now chairs Parliament’s Law and Order Select Committee along with National’s Maureen Pugh who is deputy chair, in a transparent manner look into the appropriateness of the use of the National “Leaders Budget” for the purposes of settlement of what appears to be akin to a punitive and exemplary damages type payment for Todd Barclay’s alleged breaches of another persons privacy.

Perhaps they could also look into why police have closed the investigation into Todd Barclay’s actions and or in actions as reported to the police by the then Deputy Prime Minister, Bill English, in light of the further allegations that the complainant received a large settlement, part of it which was apparently sourced from the Prime Ministers “Leaders Budget” in acknowledgement of the Privacy Breach that Mr Barclay allegedly caused and which is no longer in dispute given Todd Barclay’s statement this afternoon/evening confirming Bill English’s statement to the police regarding Todd Barclay’s actions in having supposedly taped covertly conversations to which he was not a party.

English and Barclay should both resign IMHO……it is a matter of integrity.

  14. This saga is not over yet, more egg in the face for English is due to come flying, wait and see.

Maybe the Barklay saga was also part of why Key chose to leave earlier than first expected?

    • @ Mike in Auckland … Key might be gone, but he’s up to his neck in this one. Don’t think there’s any getting out of it, no matter where he is in the world, once the proverbial hits the fan. Applies to all involved in this issue I’d say.

The rats know this and will be scurrying for cover, hiding in their stinking cesspits of corruption and crime!

  15. Barclay looks like a angry toad just look at his eyes, they are the mirror into his soul and it looks very murky and dark.

This man is a bought soul, he has no scruples, the tobacco lobby obviously bought him, he must go, and English’s explanation was moot as he knew allll along and lied about the illegal tapings of his staff, so is English comfortable with us all being spied secretly apon also?

  16. To see the MSM actually go after this government has been…..well, curious to say the least, after years of NOT doing so.
Is this a sign of things to come…..some sort of seachange in attitude or posture?
Or will normal service resume and they simply redouble their efforts to get Nazional re-elected?
Surely the corporate overlords, bank CEO’s and other one-percenters, the real masters of power in this sold-out country, haven’t switched horses in the home straight?

    • The John Key enchantment had the MSM mesmerised for around eight years, but over the last few months there are signs that it has well and truly worn off.

  17. Who’s,whats the name of Bills “Handler?” The woman behind him on the right looking sideways behind? She was Keys as well aye? Been around for a while & always 2 steps behind the PM?

  18. Perhaps National should practice a bit of tough love and remove Barclay…..he will then have the opportunity to return to the corporate world of selling tobacco if he so desires.

With Bill English having been Barclays long term family friend and at times neighbour, Todd should have no trouble getting a well paid position in the corporate world with Bill English as a referee this side of the general election.

  19. I actually hope that Todd Barclay DOESN’T resign.
    Why?
If he resigns the Natzskis have three months to wipe his memory clean from the minds of the few sleepy hobbits (mostly from down south) who might have got a bit upset by the whole debacle.
Every day he remains he hurts National’s re-election chances a little more because every day a little more of National’s dirty laundry is being washed clean in public.
I think I can live with that.

  20. If the PM can’t recall a police investigation from 2 years ago, then we have a very serious issue of credibility of the frontal lobe vortex.

  21. The population has been hit in the head with so many double whammies these past 2 + elections that we are all walking around punch drunk. It’s no wonder these corruptions/manipulations/lies that have been banging us sideways have left a lot of the population in a state of couldn’t care less. It’s a disgusting state the country is in when these lies and manipulations are just the norm these days. The soul has gone out of society.

An awful lot of people are just too worn out trying to keep their head’s above water, keeping their homes and their rents/mortgages up, trying to live on slave rates, feeding their kids, trying to keep warm – they just do not have the time to sit and think about the seriousness of the situation. And – that’s the way this Government likes it – dumbed right down to being punch drunk. Karma always wins in the end – a natural form of justice.

    • Surely, you are only talking about half of the population, the other half is doing just fine, as in my little Auckland former working class suburb – now increasingly being taken over by those pushing for ever more gentrification.

Homes big and small have been bought up, I see some getting tradies in almost daily, to do some improvements, to put in extra alarm systems, to build walls around their new private, gated communities, and to put the latest tech stuff into function.

They drive neat cars, some flash ones, mostly new imported model SUVs and the likes, doing very, very well.

In other places it is exactly as you describe, but as long as the ones in charge, also in charge of the MSM, are doing better than they have for a long time, perhaps than they ever did, they will do all to keep the spin and manipulation of the public going, so the Nats will be presented in the best of light, this saga or scandal will be old news soon, I fear.

The reporters on TV1 were rather soft on reporting on this, I note, a real worry there, as much as I hate Paddy Gower, on Newshub, he was the one who put it as it is, Bill English has a lot to answer, but the news-cycle will help them get over this.

It is a poor situation, when some in the Thornton Bubble think it is time for a change, only because in their view the present government has got “too arrogant”. Policy and a new direction do not seem to be mentioned as the main reason, I note.

That means we will only get a one term Labour led government, should they win in September, not good at all, that is, in my humble view.
