Throwing beneficiaries off welfare but not knowing where they are going, downgrading water quality and redefining it as ‘swimmable’ and now using beneficiaries in motels in the tourism stats?

Unbelievable…

Government counts homeless in tourism stats

The Government has been counting homeless people living in motels in its tourism statistics.
Statistics Minister Mark Mitchell has confirmed official tourism numbers include people who are being put into hostels or motels through emergency housing special needs grants.

The Statistics New Zealand Accommodation Survey is used as a measure of tourism levels, with the definition used to define the domestic tourists “one New Zealander spending one night at an establishment”.

However when Newshub asked Tourism Minister Paula Bennett if homeless were included, she said no.

“No, because they’re not tourists. Sorry, I’m not sure what you’re asking.

“No they’re not included in the tourism stats for accommodation.”

Labour leader Andrew Little said he was flabbergasted.

“My god. I’ve never heard that before.That is outrageous. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry to be honest. That’s off the wall.”

Prime Minister Bill English told The AM Show on Monday the Government had nothing to do with it.

“That’s the department of Statistics. We don’t have anything to do with how they count. My view would be if they’re counting them as tourists, they shouldn’t be.”

…this is a level of incompetence that is truly staggering.

    No surprises there, because most of us can read between the lines. That’s the game being played out of convincing the dullard Natziratzi supporters that all is well in Bling and BENNificiary’s stinking shit hole!

  2. It’s not incompetence, it’s planned by way of a quiet word from the Minister to hide the bodies. It’s like an episode from the Soprano’s and it’s not funny, it’s incredibly corrupt. All the denials are just farcical!

    Because they essentially had the corporate media in their back pocket I assume National thought the blow out in “losers” on the street would never make a headline. Have you ever seen TVNZ, Mediaworks or NZME including the Herald and ZB ever take any kind of interest? None I can recall. But their manipulating and cleverness to get rid of John Campbell from TV3, via their inside man Mark Weldon, has come back to haunt them because RNZ through John Campbell exposed Nationals filthy policies that have created the homeless situation and about then Ministers like Bennett ran scared, refusing interviews. So along came the panicked motel policy, to hide them somewhere, anywhere, and who cares what it costs.

    This governments “cause” has effects, sell off state houses because, a) you are short of money and, b) your donors expect payback by being able to cash in on such houses and you just know the effect is people will go homeless.

    Cut access to benefits and you know people will go homeless.

    I also expect that domestic violence stats will also bear witness and be a direct effect to Nationals policies.
