I don’t know what was more terrifying, Bill English’s delusion on welfare reforms or his Police State solution.
English kept trumpeting reduced welfare stats as if that was a great thing when we know that all these agencies have done is find reasons to disqualify beneficiaries from welfare, they have no idea where these people have gone, all they’ve done is successfully deny a benefit. That’s not a solution, that’s a recipe for disaster, but it was perhaps English’s solution that was most concerning, half a billion dollars to the bloody Police!
English’s Police State vision where we blow half a billion on more police, more prisons and expanded police powers is NOT the way you counter the impacts of poverty! Forget an extra 800 cops, we need 200 more teachers, we need 200 more nurses, we need 200 more counsellors, we need 200 more doctors – more police powers and more police resourcing is not how you change the ills of society, it’s how you compound them!
The Police in NZ have already admitted they are structurally racist, you want to give that organisation even more power?
Sadly for many authority worshipping NZers, this will sound like heaven. If Labour thought they had an easy run against English, his State of the Nation should shake then out of their complacency.

I was so shocked that he is so aggressive toward our kiwi’s but would allow foreign based gangs to run drug activities everywhere and destroy our kids by pushing drug onto them as is happening all over NZ today.

In the lead up to the election in the early 90s Jim Bolger told everyone that he would promise more Police on the beat. What happened instead was a merger of the NZ Police and the Ministry of Transport. Not too long afterwards a number of former Traffic cops quit the NZ Police.
And so that ‘promise’ by Bolger resulted in two steps forward and 100 steps back.
Quite honestly but where the Hell is English going to dig up the extra Police from? Will he resort to advertising once again for overseas Police in say the UK and other countries?
I cannot see this ‘pre-election promise’ by a desparate temporary pm and deputy pm as having much substance. It’s quite amazing though that after almost 9 years in government and after all that has happened that English comes up with this gem???!!!!! But desparate measures must be taken by desparate people eg Bill English and Paula Bennett.
And in that god-awful photo of English and Bennett it puzzling to see Bennett gazing at English like a love-struck idiot. It’s almost the same bizarre smile that she had when the election results for the Mt Roskill byelection recently.
National will NOT deliver on extra funding for police without cutting something else somewhere and probably it will be the police budget, but after the election of course.
8 plus years of National should have warned us all their promises are hollow and its their true undeclared policy that should worry us. Expect health and education privatisation for staters. US billionaires who donate to National would not expect anything different!
Looks like Simon English has gotten his hands on Andrew Little’s dog whistle. Both are disgusting and are for the jackboot. How about legalising cannabis and not putting people before the courts for rediculous reasons.
