The Fringe Festival is the best season for culture in dear old Auckland. The explosion of brilliant performance art gives a beautiful kick to the start of the year and gets the creative juices flowing. If you haven’t ever been to the Auckland Fringe Festival you are missing out on the best cutting edge performance theatre our city manages to host. Unfortunately, like every year, the Fringe Festival guide and website design remain as impenetrable to comprehension as a bank loan written in Latin.

Maybe it’s the great difficulty of working out when what is on that keeps the festival fringe? I don’t know, but from what I can glean from the terribly designed guide, here are the must see shows…

Auckland Fringe Festival 21st February-12th March

We may have to choose – 621 opinions in 45 minutes. It’s like speed dating between the Id and the Ego.

Infectious – A teenage gang of STDs escape to a new urethra. Love it.

Revolt. She said. Revolt Again – Don’t get enough language policing on Twitter? This is the show for you. Guaranteed to make men feel uncomfortable for an hour.

Outside of the Fringe Festival, Basement has an incredible line up of Summer Season events…

Pride at Basement – 14th-17th February

Femslick – Described as ‘Fucking up the patriarchy one caucasian space at a time’. Who can resist that?

Loud & Queer – Angry and shouty queer politics.

Regulars – Every Friday night February onwards

TDB Recommends NewzEngine.com

Snort – Next generation comedians doing some of the funniest underground improv you’ll see in the city.

Down to Clown – Next Generation comedians doing new stand up each week.

Arts Festival 14th-27th April

Flaps – This is supposed to be brilliant and incredibly funny.Prepared to be shocked by the performance.

Olive Copperbottom – It’s got Penny Ashton in it. That’s enough for me. I’m in.
