The union which won the historic equal pay case is urging the government to approve the pay equity principles agreed by unions and employers.

E tū, formerly the Service and Food Workers Union took the case on behalf of Kristine Bartlett against rest home Terranova Ltd.

The Government is committed to reaching a preliminary settlement of this case prior to Christmas.

E tū’s Assistant National Secretary, John Ryall says that would be an obvious time for the government to also confirm it will sign off the equal pay principles agreed on in the wake of the case.

The Joint Working Group’s principles for implementing pay equity for women were presented to cabinet in June.

“Cabinet has had five months to consider these principles, and there is still no word on when they will be signed off, “says John.

“With the equal pay offer due within days to settle Kristine’s case, it’s time to set up the mechanisms to deal with the many thousands of other women for whom this case offers the hope of pay which matches their experience and expertise.”
