Is it weird to live in a country where a rugby player having sex in a toilet is a bigger story than one of our MPs being kidnapped?

Isn’t it?

It’s bizarre right ?

A rugby player has consensual sex in a toilet and it gets more breaking news alerts than your average natural disaster.

If only our media could spend as much focus on child poverty as they do on All Black toilet sex.

On the day the Apartheid regime of Israel seized one of our MPs in International waters, the media are focused on  bloody toilet sex?

It’s like waking up at a Klan rally in a Wham T-shirt.

Am I right?

Nothing makes me feel as disorientated in my own culture as the news media focus on banality over actual issues. Watching everyone suddenly develop an opinion on gossip reminds me how easily led our fellow citizens have become.

This is why John Key wins elections.

  1. 100% right Martin. There’s a collective group think in the media and politicians to ignore as if they don’t exist the very real serious problems and issues afflicting our society- a preference to escape into La La Land! 🙁
Hence those problems just get worse and worse. But Hey! the Market will sort it won’t it?

    • M<SM should be ridiculed globally as lapdogs for corporate greed and irresponsible to the public good.

They are dirty and with a shed of any moral compass.

shame on them so I say for the hundredth time if opposition are serious about outing this criminal enterprise government and MSM they or someone needs to step up and claim our right to half the RNZ/TVNZ and use it to offer real news and current affairs or suffer another 3 years of this criminal enterprise that we simply cannot afford any more of.

  2. Weird? I think it’s scary. Who are the news executives who decide what news items should be shared with the public and what shouldn’t? That is real and dangerous power.

  3. But at least if nothing else, the Smith toilet encounter, distracts from the reality of the fact a NZ politician is being detained by an aggressive state, which John Key supports to the hilt!

Given that point, too much attention focused on Marama Davidson’s situation, might cause some negativity towards Israel and as we know, that will never do! Wouldn’t be a “perfect look” for John Key!

  4. The biggest mistake anyone with a passion for justice and equity can make is to overestimate the knowledge and integrity of those in power.

The second biggest mistake anyone with a passion for justice and equity can make is to overestimate the knowledge and integrity of the general populace.

It became clear to me more than a decade ago that I was ‘born on the wrong planet’.

And now it is abundantly clear to me that the almost-completely-insane dominant culture foisted on most of humanity by money-lenders and corporations (and freely adopted by a large portion of the populace) is ‘going up in smoke’ or ‘circling the drain’ -choose your metaphor- as it ‘progressively’ destroys everything it comes into contact with.

Fortunately, I was exposed to George Carling several years ago, and now see it all very clearly.

It’s a freak show. And it’s in its death throes.

  5. Of course, if the Russians had kidnapped a National MP in international waters, and an All Black had committed rape in a public toilet, the media’s focus may have been different.

    • Absolutely true Kropotkin,

This MSM is a “stool Pigeon for the Oligarchy” nothing more!!!!

The bloody tailors of us all.

I reckon Warner Bros were given the $49 million hand-out by Key to buy our media and they are now using our media against us all to keep their puppet Key in power!!!

  6. Yup just another example of the mainstream media giving what seems to be the increasingly dumbed-down electorate the ‘news’ that they want rather than the news that would be in their best interest to sit up and take notice of. I am left + love rugby but clearly there are other issues that deserve the coverage that this is getting.

Suspect there will be no change until something monumental enough happens to capture the attention of Gen X / Y / Millennials . . something like a left politician standing up in parliament and stating that Key is a self-serving f**kwit and the only people who are vote National are the seflish and stupid.

    • I think that’s been said already.
At this stage people are allowed to vote for whoever they want.
Can’t see what’s wrong with that and long may it continue.
You have your extreme views, so what is wrong with the majority of New Zealanders taking a different view as at least both major parties are reasonably grounded.
Just because the majority do not lean to the far left only makes them stupid in your mind, not in reality.
Take John Minto’s election promises. If he was elected just making the Avon and Heathcote rivers swimmable would bankrupt the city.
The far left don’t appear to have any concept of what things cost but the people you call “selfish and stupid” are clever enough to do the maths and will not elect a mayor who will bankrupt them.
John will get votes from the far left and a lot of protest votes from the East, as Leanne abandoned them but he will be a very poor second.
Mark my words as I have a hat to eat if I’m wrong.

        • So Mike, you obviously believe that John will poll highly – good on for keeping the faith.
But if I’m right and you, perish the thought, are wrong will
you eat your hat or cap?

        • I believe my hat is safe!
          Dalziel 73001 Minto 12533
I know many citizens, myself included, could not vote for either candidate and many in the East gave protest votes to John.
The people have spoken but for so many posters on the forum only 12533 had brains the other 73001 are just selfish and stupid.
A bit like ” everyone’s out of step except our Johnny.”

          • Good showing for John Minto as a first time candidate in a new city he seems to have made his home. As we know, local body elections are mostly decided on by vested interest holding people, mostly rate payers, and some who have business interests.

Participation was rather low in Christchurch, so how “representative” is the whole result really? Nothing to be proud of, I reckon, neither there, not in Auckland or anywhere else.

People also tend to vote who they have heard about in the MSM, and the media of course does its pre-selections, and thus only informs about candidates that they deem “worthy” to report on.

With an overly commercially focused media, dependent on advertising revenue and that paid for by business, we get a BS “democracy”, that is not true democracy. Only informed democrats and voters keep a democracy alive.

  7. Is there something I missed which says that the NZ public and MSM have a right to scrutinise the toilet visiting habits of those we hold up as ‘oikons’.

Why do people care, I ask myself, if someone goes and has a blowjob or whatever it was in a public torlit? Do they not have lives of their own to worry about?
And what makes it so necessary for the frikken PM of a country to have to comment (other than there seems to be a MSM need to have a Dear Leader, serial ponytail puller sleaze to comment on every issue – at least once daily)?.
    Simon says this…..Simon says that……this…..that.
Presumably if one wears an All Black uniform from this day forth, they’ll be required to notify their superiors of an impending need to go somewhere – for a piss, or a root, or a blowjob, or a wardrobe problem – JUST IN CASE some pervert across an adjacent wall hears a tap tap tap, or a grown.
I wonder if the so-called journalists (on 1 News, or 3, or Henry or Hosking, or NZH of Stuffed) reached orgasm covering their idol’s PRIVATE indiscretions which I would have thought should have only been the business of 3 people: a Smith, his partner and the hornette involved in her relief work). Talk about voyeurism!
It’s a shame Smith didn’t just say “mind your own fucking businesses, this is a personal issue and the saddest thing is that the MSM and a risk-managed society seems to see the need to scrutinise every minute of every hour of those they want to worship because of their own voyeuristic behaviour. Fuck off and stuff you” .

    • Too true.
Unfortunately I have to inform you that it is the far lrft not the middle ground who has turned life into a PC nightmare. Don’t blame JK, the 9 years under Aunt Helen raised the stakes.
And don’t blame her either, it wasn’t her idea but the looney left of her arty insisted.
      So silly.

    • You fail to note, he and his partner in the action were using a DISABLED TOILET, which is similar to the unacceptable habit of some others using disabled car parks.

If that is some may call “overly PC”, then I choose to disagree with them.

I am no friend of PC madness, and it has reached somewhat worrying levels, but, there are others, who want a return to the former nasty society, Trump style, where you can insult, abuse, ridicule and hurt others and get away with it, as there are other bully types who find this quite ok.

I do not like the media fuss about this issue, but I think it is as poor a look as Bill English claiming tax payer money for subsidising his housing in Wellington.

There are still some rules and ethical standards that we should respect, I feel.

  8. It’s tough to resist the tem pation of giving an opinion on Aaron Smith’s submission for entry into the foot high club, other than to say when is Aotearoa gonna be free of sticky-beaked wowsers that shit should have ended last century, but there is also no doubt this storm in a lube jar succeeded in displacing Marama Davidson’s illegal abduction and incarceration off the front pages until after the ersatz state of israel had finished their mugging and barefaced robbery.
I don’t watch TV news at all anymore since I have absolutely no interest in which kiwi currently receiving their 15 minutes is up which other 15 minuter and who is paying the rent. That is all TV news shows now. However I do flick on AJ news 1st thing in the a.m. when I’m struggling to surface from sleep into consciousness.
AJ news can wind me up with it’s incessant shots of Syrian children while failing to mention ‘Dad’ was/is a senior al Nusra official but nowhere near as frequently as any of the other news services as AJ does question some of the evil acts of imperialism committed daily by ‘you know who’, and it has been broadcasting news of the women’s flotilla high up on the list – most ofetn the first story after whatever beat up they are running on Syria that day.
I’m not certain that the women’s plight should be rated higher than the horrors currently being dealt out to the citizens of Yemen, but I guess that is my personal opinionm.
One thing cannot be avoided by claims of subjectivity is the fact that I had no idea that Marama Davidson was on the boat before today and I didn’t learn that from AJ news.

There has been considerable coverage of the vogae but almost no information about the crew, which is a refelection of the duplicitous approach of the ME political elire towards the privations of Palestinians.
There is barely a ME leader who doesn’t claim to deplore the evil of the israel secret police state, but aside from presidents Assad and Rouhani, few of these politicians have acted to pressure israel to quit it’s racist & genocidal endeavours.

It is on all of us to make sure we do not provide any material support to the zionist entity. It is easy enough to boycott obviously israel manufacturewd goods but staying across which corporations are either owned ny israelis or provide political & financial support to the apartheid state is more difficult, and trying to google a list nigh on impossible.
It is tough to judge whether the first 4 or 8 pages of results are of sites constructed by loony toons Nazi ‘jewish conspiracy theorists’ or more likely the result of hasbara gaslighting, but one thing is certain as an aid to avoiding giving money to zionist thugs, those pages are useless.
This alternet link is useful although it is american so it has a few food products uncommon in Aotearoa. The site lists Hewlett Packard (HP), Sodastream, & Motorola as products to avoid if you do not want to subsidize murder, theft, rape & mayhem.

  9. I’d be more sympathetic to the plight of a kidnapped MP if they were protesting in our waters about the incursion of American warships for some boys’ wargames, or the sudden arrival of a Chinese spyship in our major port. Let’s ask Simon Bridges whether he really means to allow the arrest of peaceful protesters in our waters.

    • One doesn’t need to be to the exclusion of the other, Rosie. If we took no action against an injustice because of injustices elsewhere, that would create a moral paralysis that would ultimately benefit the perpetrators of injustice.

    • Oh, I was wrong, it was HEADLINE news, with all kinds of excuses mentioned, saying that what Dan Carter and his made did was all totally ok and nothing to feel guilty about.

  10. It’s frigging disgusting that this ruby player is taking preference over the kidnapping of a New Zealand Member of Parliament. That is what should be front page news on every news site throughout the country, this should be the focus, this is what all of New Zealand should be outraged about, not some dumb ruby player with his pants down, who is now crying crocodile tears becasue he got caught out.

If it was a National MP instead of a Green MP, would the New Zealand msm ignore it for a dumb rugby player?

  11. Massive global financial, economic, political and environmental changes are underway, and it is important to the ‘farm owners’ that their ‘livestock’ remains complacent, compliant, docile, oblivious and unquestioning for as long as possible.

The ‘owners’ worked out long ago that the best way to achieve a state of oblivious compliance and complacency is to feed the ‘livestock’ mindless entertainment and distraction; get the masses emotionally involved in matters of no significance and they won’t have the time, energy or inclination to become informed and involved in matters of significance. Commensurate with that dumbing-down agenda is to not report matters of significance or to trivialize them.

Anyone who thinks this will all end other than utterly disastrously is either grossly uninformed or is deranged. The American neocons attempts to destablise Syria and open it up to corporate control and exploitation took another setback yesterday, and they are fast running out of options. The global financial system is suffering wild gyrations. And right now Florida is being pounded, Taiwan and China having been pounded recently. Everywhere we look things are unravelling.

Meanwhile intelligent people in America are at their wits end, having to face levels of stupidity and hubris that exceed those in NZ.

‘I’ve been keeping quiet on here for some time because I’m absolutely disgusted with the escalating levels of unbelievable stupidity being exhibited by Americans. There is no end to it this (s)Election season and if the continuing trend is any indication of the future (and it probably is), we’ve not seen anything yet.

No matter which candidate is (s)Elected in November, it’s going to be a terrible time for America. Even worse however, will be what this will mean for the planet. I’m referring to how America and Americans themselves are going to respond to the new commander in chief and the dictates that will follow. It’s going to be very, very ugly. This will not be a place to be. Leave if you can.’…..
