Why Paul Henry is ripping TVNZ 1 Breakfast to pieces

The ratings are damning despite The Herald’s bizarre reporting

They’ve officially been on air for a week, so just how are TV One’s new Breakfast hosts rating against TV3’s Paul Henry?

Hilary Barry and Jack Tame took over the early morning slot last week, replacing Rawdon Christie and Nadine Chalmers-Ross.

The move came as TVNZ struggled to keep their lead ahead of TV3, as Paul Henry continued to grow his audience in the key 25-54 demographic.

But last week showed some promising signs as Breakfast ended the week more than 10,000 viewers (aged 25-54) ahead of Paul Henry, according to Nielsen.

Friday morning saw 47,000 viewers aged 25-54 tune into Breakfast, while 34,000 viewers watched Paul Henry.

That marked the largest audience for Breakfast’s new hosts, ahead of their debut episode, which saw 46,000 viewers tune in, versus Paul Henry’s 40,000.

…the fact that Paul Henry is even close to Breakfast TVNZ1 in terms of ratings should put the fear of the returned zombie Christ into TVNZ management.

Henry is an incredibly talented broadcaster on top of being an amazing propagandist for the Right. Jake Tame and Hillary Barry look like Christian Broadcasters in comparison.

Compare the manner in which Paul Henry was able to generate and manipulate audience anger last week over the Filipo case. Jack and Hillary can’t foam at the mouth with the same righteous tone and that gives Henry the edge.

TVNZ needs to import that kind of political polemicist talent because neither Hillary or Jack can do that.

If TVNZ don’t try to be edgier, Henry will out rate them by the end of the year.

  1. So that is all there is in viewer numbers, a few tens of thousands each way? I wonder how many tens of thousands have instead been watching the shopping channels, I bet more than that, given the shallowness of mentality in the consumerist part of society.

  2. Is foaming at the mouth and spewing righteous rude rhetoric a compliment ?
Is being a boring SELF ABSORBED ARROGANT EGO MANIAC a compliment ?
Are ratings the only game in town ?

What about real journalism that is not insulting and shares stories and has depth and respect ? Hillary and Jack are real and honest and do not need to compete with the likes of the ridiculous nonsense coming from Paul Henry. Clearly his co-hosts are playing the part and quietly ( likely ? ) do not appreciate Paul’s immense boring ego and rants and lack of respect for anyone who disagrees with him. He is beyond rude and beyond compassionate and is a very small man with a very big mouth that embarrasses our country. David Icke sensed this and walked out and thank goodness for that. It showed guts to walk away from the macho ; righteous and frankly mostly out of touch pseudo journo that Henry is. He is the one needing to be retired for the sake of our nations integrity and reputation.

He is no bench mark to try and aspire to and being edgier and focused on ratings may be over rated.

Where are the Judy Baileys in NZ broadcasting and journalism ? She is quality and yet they let her go.
    What idiots !

  3. Correct. Henry is funny too, not sure if you saw him talking about how much sperm went down the drain last week despite there being a lack of sperm donors in NZ (is was done in the best taste possible) He also seems to attract quality guests, despite being an irritating git sometimes.

  4. I totally agree agree Martyn, the problem with Hilary and Jack are they are two of the same – sweet saccharine nice guys. Nothing polarising about them, you can neither love or loathe them and they don’t make you jerk to attention with a “what the hell did he just say” sort of ability. I can not decide if I like or loathe Paul Henry but by God he makes you sit up and listen and he is completely nuts and admits it on a regular basis. I like Hilary, she was a fantastic news reader, but she is the heir of the mother of the nation and taken up the helm very well indeed. Jack Tame is just a handsome bland pro America heir to Hosking and he isn’t nasty enough to get any attention.

I never thought it would come, but for in between noise while I get my morning coffee on, its Paul Henry, idiot that he is – a bit of vitriol in the morning is good to get the day going. I suspect you are right and he may out do Channel 1 in ratings. He may be right wing but he gave the PM a real going over, over the flag debate. How many people can get away with saying – its not bloody good enough John to our Leader!! over his stupid flag design.

As an aside I have just watched the Nation and Q & A which I had taped and the two shows are a complete waste of space – no balance, no two sides of the equation – thank God we have online content we can access.
