  1. I’m keeping an eye on the situation. The trouble is that the other one is wandering off doing whatever it likes.

  2. Some say politics is like sports and if I was a referee i’d be one eye’d that’s absolute rubbish…..at half time i’d go in with both eyes wide shut…

  3. “Well… Yes, I was dumped back in the relatively clean waters surrounding Aotearoa – half dead but still wriggling.”

  5. Our modern day Simpsons, Smithers the mouth piece for Mr Burns and his dream of creating export opportunities like ‘Blinky the 3 eyed fish’.

Smithers is Mr. Burns’ devoted executive assistant. His father, Waylon Smithers, Sr., worked for Burns until he died of radiation poisoning after saving Springfield from a potential nuclear meltdown, when Smithers was a baby.[4] Although he is not openly gay, Smithers frequents Springfield’s gay village[5] and goes on a vacation to a male-only resort.[6] It was revealed in a flashback that he was married to a woman once, but the two split up when Mr. Burns came between them.[7] Smithers is shown to have a passionate and deep love for Mr. Burns, and his sexual orientation has been characterized by the writers of the show as “Burns-sexual”.

Mr. Burns remained largely ignorant of Smithers’ devoted adoration, much to Smithers’ frustration. Mr. Burns himself has been involved with several women and in “A Hunka Hunka Burns in Love”, Smithers is noticeably disgusted when Mr. Burns starts looking for a female companion.[8] Burns, for his part, views Smithers as somewhat of a lackey, albeit a highly valued one for his competence. He has “rewarded” Smithers’ devotion with the future “honor” of being buried alive with him after he dies.[9] Smithers has been shown to be somewhat dependent on his relationship with Burns. In “Homer the Smithers”, Mr. Burns orders Smithers to take a vacation and Homer Simpson is hired as a temporary replacement. When Homer loses his temper and punches Mr. Burns in the face, Mr. Burns learns to become self-reliant and this results in Smithers being fired. Smithers decides that he needs to be Mr. Burns’ assistant and eventually gets his job back.[6] In the season 27 episode “The Burns Cage”, Smithers admits his love to Burns, who reaffirms his contempt for his assistant.[10]

The Blinky species is seen quite often in natural bodies of water in Springfield, and is a product of the nuclear waste of Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. Blinky was caught by Bart at the Old Fishin’ Hole and photographer Dave Shutton snapped a picture and put it in The Springfield Shopper. At the same time, Mr. Burns was running for governor, and Blinky became a major topic in his campaign. In a TV ad, Burns defended Blinky, saying he was the next step in the evolutionary ladder and not a horrible mutant, and extolling Blinky as a miracle of nature “with a taste that can’t be beat”. On the eve of the election, Burns had a comfortable lead over Governor Bailey in the polls. As a publicity stunt intended to secure victory, Mr. Burns had dinner at the Simpson home and Marge served the Blinky fish that Bart had caught earlier. Burns took a bite, found it disgusting and spat it out. Because the meal was being filmed, video of the incident immediately went on the air and Burns ended up losing the election to Governor Bailey, all because of Blinky.[2]
