The heart breaking story of New Plymouth mayor Andrew Judd is bad enough. The abuse he has had to resign from because he had the courage to push for Maori rights should shame NZ because such naked ignorance makes us a lesser country.

What could possibly top such wilful bigotry? Why Mike Hosking of course. Here is what Mike had to say in response to a mayor with the bravery to stand for indigenous rights…

“Sad to say I’d never personally attack him obviously but he’s completely out of touch with middle New Zealand,”

“There’s nothing wrong with Maori representation on councils cause any Maori that wants to stand for a council is more than welcome to do so and you can sell your message and if you’re good enough you’ll get voted on.”

…to have such graceless racism defended rather than challenged by a media personality is bad enough, but on the public broadcaster? This is Paul Henry level offensiveness, we expect more from the public broadcaster.

  1. I am shamed we treat Maori culture in this way and with ignorance as Pakeha, as I have had many associations with Māori through my 72 years around this world.

Even in Canada any immigrant Māori I worked with, I again found there Māori to be proud honest warm people as I found here in NZ, so shame to any people who lack respect for Māori, who are our partners in life.

  2. Andrew Judd quickly acquired the name Judas because he betrayed practically everyone who voted for him within a few days of taking office.

After campaigning on the slogan of ‘Bringing back integrity to local government’, he quickly demonstrated that he had no integrity, and quickly became just another trough-feeder. Two councillors, Houwers and McLeod, resigned in disgust at the antics of the Judd and his administration, leaving a council composed mostly of lazy trough-feeders.

Andrew Judas’ bleating about how hard-done-by he was just doesn’t wash. He will not be standing again for the mayoralty not because of the undemocratic Maori ward issue he championed but he knows he is widely recognised as a phony and does not want the embarrassment of getting just a few hundred votes.

As for Mike Hosking, well he’s just another corporate arsehole, paid well for spouting phony narratives that keep the dumbed-down masses believing in the system.

  3. Mike Hosting is hardly my favourite broadcaster but please explain how Mike Hosking’s comments are racist?

I could agree with ignorance of treaty responsibilities as a criticism but the comments as quoted are not racist. We throw around that epithet too readily in my opinion.

    • I’m Maori and if you are a pakeha and can’t understand how mike hoskings comments contribute and support the perpetrators of racism then you are an example of an ignorant white person that doesn’t suffer from daily subtle racism like myself and no doubt many maori across this country of ours. This episode of the Racist Mike is nothing new? On his website there are a shit load of racist demeaning articles concerning maori in general and how apparently over privileged us maori are? which is bullshet!!

Maori are not going nowhere? this is our country of Origin. The Celtic race like some pakeha dreamingly believe wasn’t here 5000 years before Maori. This is the type of garbage and nonsense that we maori are facing constantly? If its not the Usurp of our culture then we get bombarded with shit like “you Maoris are thief, lazy, dole bluggers, violent, child bashers evil ….etc?

So from my experience of being Maori in our country hasn’t been pleasant to say the least, so my message to pakehas who read this? if you hate us(Maori) ask yourself why? http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/checkpoint/audio/201800356/academic-says-media-rhetoric-reinforces-racist-attitudes

      • Googling “racism”…

“the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.”

Mike’s comments by this definition were not racist. However they did show ignorance of the treaty of Waitangi – specifically regarding shared governance.

In fact arguably the treaty of Waitangi itself is a racist document, guaranteeing specific rights to members of the Maori.

        • In fact arguably the treaty of Waitangi itself is a racist document, guaranteeing specific rights to members of the Maori.

Rubbish. It was a treaty between two peoples, to allow for peaceful co-existence on this land, and supposedly guaranteeing undisturbed possession of tribal property.

Considering that the Treaty was written by pakeha, I doubt you have anything to whinge about. And more so considering the Treaty was broken on several occassions (by the Crown who instigated the Treaty).

I doubt you’d you’d hold such views if your property rights were over-ruled by others, based solely of force of arms.

Your title to your land garantees you specific rights, to the exclusion of all others. So you have have nothing to bitch about.
