EXCLUSIVE: Inside Internal Party Research – the dangers for Key the clues for Labour

Looking at some internal Party Research this week, there was much that made for interesting reading.

The biggest take away is the manner in which Key’s favourability has collapsed. The research was taken before the Tax Haven scandal had erupted but for many NZers, the TPPA, ponytail pulling and the flag referendum have crossed thresholds where a lot more voters now see Key as arrogant and smug.

So why isn’t that jump in dislike being reflected in polls? Because as much as NZers are now wary and disliking of Key, they see no real political alternative.

The problem for Labour is total lack of cut through. Voters they are trying to target don’t watch mainstream media and when they do watch mainstream media, the banality of the click bait crap many journalists are now pressured to produce means actual long form investigation of policy is abandoned for Twitter retweets. The research showed that many NZers couldn’t even determine what a Labour Party Policy was.

There are clues in the research for Labour to consider.

  • Voters need to see Labour as an alternative
  • Voters are looking for an excuse to abandon the National Party
  • Voters aren’t using traditional media to determine their vote.

What possible moves should Labour consider knowing this?

  • Labour need to launch a fresh policy platform – ‘The New Social Contract’ to tackle the issues Key simply claims aren’t issues and use this new policy platform to attract voters attention.
  • Bypass traditional media for a winter series of barnstorming town hall meetings using this new policy platform and live streamed around the country. Combining flaxroot localism with social media amplification. Labour can’t get through the impenetrable wall of mainstream media clickbait headlines, but they can generate their own media.
  • Remind voters again and again that tax haven building John Key is not ruling in the interests of the people, that he’s ruling in the interests of oil companies, casinos, alcohol industry, fast food industry, Corporate Hollywood, Oravida, property speculators, Washington, Beijing – this is what will convince NZers to change votes.

    • Oh yeah, the one time that Edward Snowden has lied.
And we know that’s true because John Key said it was true. Honestly, only because John said so.

Still embracing the ‘Kim Dotcom’s henchmen’ story eh? A poodle for USA corporations. Strange position for someone of a higher standard. Says a lot about your values.

    • Reality is the moment of truth spoke to the interested and already open minded.
Most kiwis are too comfortable to believe the corruption and vested interests that are at play.
      They are naive.
If that’s labours fault it only because of their part in historical education policy

    • compelling argument.

Martyn’s fundamentally right. Executing is the hard part. How hard, won’t know till someone tries.

THere’s one other thing Labour has to defuse -= that’s the the “oh, all parties do this, it’s just politics” line that thy ran with on Dirty Politics. People do get deterred by that, think they don’t know enough, don’t trust their own gut and facts about their life.

The counter is a sunlight promise to go with the new social contract. Throw open all the secrets that are buried away in the beehive. It will throw some under the bus, so mandate some amnesty for those buraeucrats and corporates who come forward as whistleblowers to help the transition to democracy happen.

      • The other line they have to counter is “National are better economic managers , masters of the economy blah blah blah” bullshit .
They consistently run this line and whilst Labour counter with the “we ran 9 years of straight surpluses and National have run 7 years of no surpluses, ” it’s straight over peoples heads. They are choosing to ignore it. There’s no cut through with that line.
They should keep attacking National’s obvious economic incompetence with graphic easy to understand examples because most people are so dumbed down out there with daily doses of Hosking , Henry, wall to wall weather reports and sport, they only understand basic.
They have to practice over and over again mock interviews with people throwing questions at them playing ‘the devils advocate’.
        Analyse themselves. Perfect their messaging.
Msm are trying to make Labour gun shy with lines like,
        “Don’t criticize Key”,it doesn’t work.
        Don’t criticize National , it doesn’t work.
And the classic “Labours being too oppositional”.
Have you ever heard such nonsensical rubbish ?
Keep bringing out policies that serve the majority of N.Z’s well.
Keep thinking “how will this effect future generations”?
Keep highlighting Nationals short term corporate ‘sugar hit’ mentality .
National are hopeless , incompetent and absolutely wreckless. They should have been gone a long long time ago.
If they get another term, N.Z, as we used to know it, is stuffed …. if it isn’t already !!

  1. You are on the money and it’s what I am hearing from people who have little interest in politics but who vote. They don’t see an alternative government standing by but are finding National increasingly concerning. And Key is nowhere near as popular as myth would suggest in fact he’s a bit of an embarrassing liability.

Two issues. National plagiarise policy especially if it gains votes but of course it will be a bastardised ineffective clone so whatever Labour release will be plundered if it gets votes.

Secondly Nationals smear machine is second to none and a lot of the uncertainty about Labour or the Greens stems from nothing more than that.

So tough road to hoe, timing will be everything plus a few more dirty deals exposed.

    • Mr Little trailed Winston Peters as the preferred PM in the last Poll and his party was 28 per cent compared to National at 50 per cent. It is not good to have an opportunity so much behind the government and with absolutely no policy. The strength of a government is the ability of the opposition to hold them to account. Until the opposition get their “ducks in a row” nothing will change.

You guys should understand this – instead of attacking the PM the other players in the game should receive some attention.

      • “It is not good to have an opportunity so much behind the government and with absolutely no policy.”

You’re right. However, if you care to stop and look at Labour’s website, you’ll find policy aplenty. The only reason people think they have none is because the MSM don’t discuss it. The “no policy” argument is a dead horse, so please stop flogging it.

        • Yes very true RICHARQUIS, people need to recognize the role of the most corrupt and amoral pro Nat biased msm at play, and its complicity in National’s dirty politics to drown out, shut down and ridicule what Labour and the opposition parties have to say. Look at how the media disgracefully tried to make the huge anti TPPA rally a joke by belittling and ridiculing the protesters. What message would it have sent to those who only watch tv news? IMO its the wall of National party msm that is one of the biggest hurdles the opposition needs to overcome. Very hard to get the message out there when it gets twisted and blocked from all sides.

      • Grant or David Farrar or whatever scripted your comment, I’ve been observing this new approach from National, leave the mega dodgy compromised Key alone and people will vote Labour comments. The, I know someome who knows a man who used to vote Labour but them being a big meanie to poor old honest John Key is just not on.

Afraid to say these disingenuous bullshit shill “random” comments in blogs are so transparently fake its laughable.

  2. Bomber, I agree with you for a change. It has been obvious even to an amateur like me that Labour’s biggest weakness has been its failure to articulate an alternative to neoliberalism-as-usual. As they get rid of that Rogernome rump (Goff, Cosgrove) perhaps that will change. People vote with their hearts, and they vote Tory when house prices are bouyant. Labour needs to be much stronger and clearer about giving a voice to those many who have been locked out of even getting halfway decent accommodation.
People don’t want detailed policy (if they do they join the Greens) but an alternative that promises a better future for their kids would just about do it.

  3. what ? you mean do what Winston has never stopped doing??? Surely not Bomber!
Labour deserves to be where they are. They had a decent leader and they shot him in the back. I don’t think Labour could manage a runny sh** in a cholera epidemic!.
The Greens and NZ First need to step up their game and grab more of the vote and Labour needs to accept the fact that they are the authors of their own demise. Would be good to see Labour’s front bench actually doing the hard graft on electioneering though!

    • +100 Shona…Labour is a light blue party…they are scared to be OPPOSITION to jonkey nactional…even when handed the opportunity on a plate

    • I don’t think Labour could manage a runny sh** in a cholera epidemic!.
Best metaphor of the week. Well done Shona.

    • Agreed Shona, it dosnt have to be Labour, they dont stand up to National but cave in most times,or so MSN would have us believe. the future benefits would be tremendous.
We only have National as Martyn says because people dont see an alternative.
How about Winston Peters heading Labour ,Greens and NZ First. this is strategy ,surely these parties can put aside their egos and combine to get rid of this pernicious Nat government.
Winston could lead us away from Keys govt, until another new and decent leader emerges, to take over when Winston decides to retire.
The NZ herald is fading as news ,we need a new msm to replace it not owned by the big money, (see Wake up New Zealand today ,they mention Martyn Bradbury, and show how the top money criminals controll media and governments and the money.)

  4. All will be okay Martin. Now that Key has been commanded to return 66 Chinese nationals on money and criminal charges, where will Key and National get their party donations from, Oravida?

  5. Yes, the narrative being written by Farrar et al, doesn’t reflect what’s happening in the polls. Keys favorability ratings now stand at just +2% as an increasing number of people are starting to view him as slippery and arrogant – which highlights his vulnerability to an inspiring and effective opposition. Depressingly, we’re still not getting that regardless of media bias.

    • “slippery and arrogant” Ray?
      You forgot,
      lying, (often called “forgetting”)
      creepy (hair-tugging),
crass (on a shock jock radio about what he does in the shower),
try-hard (in the changing sheds with All blacks),
dictator (installing the TPPA without debate in the chamber),
egomaniacal (thinking he can dish out knighthoods like a personal pat-on-the-back-nudge-nudge-handshake-to-seal-a-deal-or-favour).
unpatriotic (wanting to change the flag and appearing on Letterman taking the piss out of NZ)

      Did I miss anything Ray?

      • I think you’ve got a good summary although we could include nasty and completely lacking in moral compass since he’s open to sending Chinese people back to a state which sanctions the murder of it’s opponents.

  6. The ‘The New Social Contract’ is a brilliant idea, with the proviso that it is real and sound, and not just another pitch. I would add two things to what you have said. (1) National can commit to their wealthy core and pitch to the middle class. Labour does not have that luxury. Many of their voters, both middle and working class, live on the edge of their nerves, and stop listening the minute they see there is nothing of significance on offer. Don’t over-hype things. The shouted “100,000 AFFORDABLE HOUSES!!!!….over the next 20 or 30 years….affordable to those in the top 20% of wage earners…..and those with rich parents,” “A SAVING OF $600….over five years”, and so on, don’t speak to desperate people. (2) These are the bits Labour should borrow from the right – urgency, hunger and conviction on behalf of the people they claim to represent.

  7. I think the fact that a lot of people think John Key is the best they have got to vote for says more about them than about Labour or the Greens

          • LOWSTANDARD – Your short ; trite ; sound bites with no substance shows a desperate man who thinks he is doing something and making a difference.
Another Natz troll who thinks he is funny and really only is mostly insulting and very boring – waste of space and ink.
They must not be paying you very much for your one or two sentences.

      • For someone who calls himself Higherstandard, you, like the National party you support, have no principles whatsoever, no conscience, and a broken moral compass.

You need to change your username, you are deliberating misrepresenting yourself. Are all National people liars and con jobs?

        • Nailed it – WORDS – I agree – I think that HIGHSTANDARD should change his name to — ASLEEPn’LYING or
          NOSTANDARD or NATZLOVER or CONJOB-nomorals ;
          or JonkyTroll.
His one or two sentences are a joke and show such ignorance.
Let us not stoop to his level and just laugh at trollmania.

  8. John key is the weakest Prime Minister we have had apart from Jenny Shipley who didn’t actually get voted in but rolled Bolger

  9. HS and Pete obviously get paid to come and troll here. Do they pay GST on their 30 pieces of silver? Do they pay RWT?

I think you are right about the left putting up a basic ‘The New Social Contract’, much like Helen Clark’s Pledge Card (but make sure that the funding is squeaky clean for it this time).

Let’s have a go at giving them some suggestions for ‘The New Social Contract’ here:
20% tax for the lowest paid and beneficiaries.
Adjusting the tax paid for middle incomes in the next tier up of income.
Hammer the rich tax dodgers and corporates to pay their fair share of tax.
UBI to replace all benefits and super payments.
Tax empty houses that have been bought for speculation at 35% of the mean rent for the postcode of the houses.

Any suggestions? Let’s aim for 20 and a Labour coalition can whittle it down to 10-12 for starters.

As an elderly lady with a social conscience I’ve started with 5 suggestions and I’m sure there that other egalitarian-minded kiwis can make suggestions to help to redress the balance of 30 years of rampant neoliberal dogmatic bullshit (excuse my language Martyn).

  10. I agree Martyn, all the alternate parties have to circumvent MSM, the newspapers and even RNZ with the exception of John Campbell are not giving the alternate parties a fair go at all. People have turned off and are just not wanting to read or listen to the rubbish which may as well be propaganda these days. How much of this tripe do we have to put up with.

Barnstorming the town halls is a great idea especially in the smaller towns, in the larger cities they probably would have to hire out smaller venues in the suburbs to make it easier for people on lower incomes who can’t afford extra to pay out for fares. Getting people in to listen wouldn’t difficult in poorer areas and middle class areas for that matter.

I know this sounds crazy but banning reporters from the venues would be great as well as all they are going to do is report/distort in the MSM what has been said and rubbish every good thing the alternate parties want to impart to the listeners.

Something has to happen, on a daily basis we are hearing the most terrible stuff going down with the Government and the MSM are too scared for their jobs to release to the public anything which isn’t praising the Government for the good things they do. We could end up with term after term of this sleazy government and it is a horrifying thought. Keep up your good work.

  11. There is a logical answer to the dilemma in my opinion. That is the formation of ” The New Coalition ” opposition NOW.

    • HV good idea “The New Coalition” or “TNC” for those who revel in abbreviation all sounds good; – like during the last depression it was then “The new deal” and the political party that wore that badge then romped in to taken over so good thinking there it may catch on.

    • Yes High Vis

And we then need to get “The New Coalition” to again as a equal voice for the remaining voters of about a Half of all voters need to see and hear them as they take legally back half of the publically funded RNZ and TVNZ to raise up their new credible policies to capture the country back from the current corrupt “sell it off” bunch of Nactional carpetbaggers.

    • yes this would be good but I think Labour is not really into coalitions …it is still into first- past- the- post mode and winner take all

just look at the last Election and TTT

      Labour has delusions of grandeur

      • Don’t where you got that crazy idea from, of course Labour are into coalitions. Labour led a coalition government when it was in power for 9 years. They know what mmp is about. Any party aligning themselves with Dotcom in 2014 would have been torn to shreds by the Nats and the media, that’s why Mana didn’t retain its TTT seat. Dotcom knew he was politically toxic, and that’s why he said he was sorry.

          • Its not propaganda much. Dotcom is politically toxic. That’s why Hone Harawira lost. And Labour always said they were going for ALL the Maori seats including TTT. Face it, Hone Harawira couldn’t cut it with his own electorate because of Dotcom. He ruined all chances.

What I do know is that you are desperate, besides yourself even. I think you would believe any bullshit from National’s lying black ops crew if it serves your purpose. When has anyone associated with National ever told the truth? particularly Lusk, Garner and du Plessis-Allan? That link of yours was laughed at ages ago, and you talk of propaganda?!!!

  12. Supporting Labour feels like “Battered Person Syndrome”, why do we keep doing this to ourselves?

Labour is not the “lesser of two evils”. They are not the champions of “incremental reform”, or any reform for that matter. They are as much the architects of Neo-liberalism in this country as National ever was. They are Centrists in the pay of Corporate New Zealand as much as National, except National is at least bloody honest about it.

Labour’s fortunes are in the crapper because they’ve been betraying New Zealand Workers for more than 30 years straight, and nobody believes a word they say any more. It’s not a conspiracy. It’s not anything National has done. It’s because the electorate has wised up to them!

Nobody trusts them any more, except us, the Institutional Left, which remains loyal to the point of masochism. Just stop it! Stop submitting yourselves to abuse! Stop believing their lies about representing the Workers. Stop convincing yourselves that “they can change”, and that “they really do care about us”.

It’s time to dump these shif’less cheating losers and make a new life! We need a political Party in this country that does not take money from corporations, and that truly works for the people of New Zealand.

Labour’s poll numbers are so low that it really would not take much to roll them, especially if we learned the grass-roots organising techniques being pioneered by Labour UK, by Bernie Sanders and Podemos.

The time is now. I’ve been cheated on for the last time.

    I want a divorce.

    • The fact that Shane Jones was being funded by Wira Gardiner in his leadership campaign against Cunliffe was the real kicker for me of the devious and insidious corruption of New Zealand politics.

Asset stripping of New Zealand continues unabated and so social services will gradually grind to a halt through lack of funding. Private enterprise DOC and crowd-funded DOC estate; chartered schools over-funded so they succeed, then introduced to replace state-funded schools; private prisons funded by Death Race and fight-clubs;and if hospital waiting lists don’t kill off the poor, then the food in the hospitals will.

      Welcome to Oceania.

On each landing, opposite the lift-shaft, the poster with the enormous face gazed from the wall. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU.

On each television and radio station, the soulless eyes gazed. It was one of those pictures which are so contrived that the eyes follow you about when you move. BIG JOHN IS WATCHING YOU.

      • I’m glad Shane Jones is gone. Don’t know why the media are trying to tout him as a NZ First candidate. Winston is no fool.

    • From whom? Sounds like you are already married to National. If you feel you have been cheated on for the last time, stop voting for National then.

  13. Keys invinsability took a dent publicly when he was booed in two different venues he was attending some weeks ago,and in the face of this loss of love from the people the MSM had to do some quick damage control, trying to find someone that was still under the John Key spell and get them to verify publicly that he is still a great guy….
No PM can sustain the negative stories engulfing this incumbent unless they have the protection Key enjoys its unprecedented in NZ ,even Muldoon,Lange,Bolger and Helen Clark were worn down and lost authority from the onslaught of events.
Key its been said is Nationals great asset but he is poisoning the office and is becoming a liability fast .
I agree Martyn about the opposition, kiwis wanting an alternative is what I am hearing all the time and there is no shortage of crisis issues too fight
Labour and others must present a united coalition and a social contract is a good idea and get that cut through is vital.
Charisma ,humour, wit and confidence with policy that’s bullet pointed and catches people’s attention and gives kiwis real hope that they can vote for a real brighter future has worked before.
Time is running out ahead of next year if we are going to escape from planet Key.

  14. The Labour party voted for Cunliffe and the neoliberals in caucus allowed jonkey to try to make him look ridiculous. those neolibs who did not support David should not be in the Labour party. Douglas and Prebble had the decency to quit and join ACI.

    • +100…DBW

      …and Little Labour supports :

      * overseas agencies spying on New Zealanders

      * increasing NZ troops to the Middle East at the USA’s request, to fight an ISIS war which USA started and probably supports…hence putting NZ troops in danger of wasting their lives to a bogus cause.

      * it does NOT support KiwiBank as a strong viable government guaranteed Bank for New Zealanders (prefers to downgrade KiwiBank and continue to let the OZ banks take billions out of New Zealand)

      * started talking about NZ being a Republic sooner, after Jonkey Nactional lost his bid with $26 million NZ taxpayer dollars to change the NZ flag ie Little is politically incompetent to capitalise on jonkey Nactionals failures…he should have been rubbing in the cost (the Republican idea was dismissed by Bill English with derision, hence turning Nactionals flag failure into a small PR advantage for Nactional)…

      * failed to Oppose TPPA for a very long time and then only partially ( pale blue support for USA corporate robbers)

      * supports Hillary Clinton and presumably her Middle East crimes

      * the list of Labour’s pale blue incompetencies goes on and on…

….as soon as Labour defied its own Labour grassroots vote support for David Cunliffe the writing was on the wall for a shell neolib party….Nactional was delighted…they now have a tamed stooge supportive Labour Party

    • Douglas was the co founder of Act. Goff is going, Cosgrove is going. Shearer has been put in his place by Andrew Little. Time to cut Labour a break, the real enemy here to this country and its people is dictator John Key and his government.

  15. To be honest, I think the reality is far worse, most people are these days willing mercenaries, who make deals with the devil and with mammon all the time, as long as they seem to get something out of it.

Key is coming back from China with a plan to boost tourism from Mainland China threefold of what it was last year, up to a million visitors from there a year. That means money coming in, jobs, even though it means only as waiter, waitress (pref. with blonde ponytails, I suspect), and cab, bus and train-drivers, also chauffeurs for the mega-rich.

But the operators of businesses will make nice gains, who cares where the clientele comes from, who cares about the CO2 and other gas emissions from airlines flying in and out, so money to be made, and like the gold rush mad cowboys that rushed to milk the herds during the dairy boom, many will start up a tourism business, hiring chinese speaking staff to work for next to nothing.

Queenstown will make the start with a special deal for getting Chinese Amway sellers there, the “Club Mad” for those that sell their souls to sell rubbish to make quick dollares for their pyramid scheme bosses.

Key the salesman, leading the salesmen and women, all are sales people now, selling themselves, some other “goods” and their hearts and soul. Never mind the environment, also bring in hundreds of thousands more migrants, growth for growth’s sake is the agenda.

Do I hear and see any dissent, NOPE, almost none, that means, nobody really cares enough, give Key a fourth term, to complete the sellout of New Zealand. Most New Zealanders don’t mind selling the land or carpet from under their feet, as long as they make some money out of it that pays the weekly bills.

RIP New Zealand, it has sold out now!

Labour has not learned such ruthless “hard selling tactics”, and thus nobody goes to their “shop”.

    • Yes Mike in Auckland, Labour has not learned such ruthless “hard selling tactics”, and thus nobody goes to their “shop”.

That is why a Labour Green/NZ First ect’ urgently need their own champion media platform like Nactional has almost everywhere as Natz now clearly have totally cornered the NZTV RNZ and almost all commercial radio to trumpet their policies with glam.

Crucially for us and our future, Labour if they realise the gravity of this dilemma, can have the will to finally form a fighting unit with all opposition parties, need the same balanced exposure with clear credible policies to counter the Nasty Natz “sell all regime”.

This will require them to request a court injunction to take control of a half legitimate ownership of all Government SOE controlled media outlets including RNZ/NZTV and all Government printers as well to tell “The other side of the story”

Turkey Government have seized similarly as Key In’c has done, to control single handed, only their Government policy, which is actually a policy which is formerly foreign to us in NZ and called “Propaganda.”

Wake up Opposition!!!!!!!! The clock is now ticking; – Tick-tock-tick-tock

  16. A bold new approach to how drugs are treated in this country, now is the opportunity to legalise cannabis and allow the medical use of the actual plant.
Continuing to tow the lines in favour of the usual coalition partner – Peter Dunne has to stop, medical users need affordable solutions not more bureaucracy, red tape and high cost, most are poor and just trying to get by with a disability ect, they don’t need more headaches.
Go for the care factor of voters.

  17. So we now know with certainty that Key is hitching his welcome wagon onto communist China as he is with our tax paid money inviting today some 10 000 business folk here at our expense!!!!!!

Obviously to buy the country and all assets they can for the Chinese Government as previously uncovered!!

    Not to look at scenery.

So now you see the big picture, Key is actually using our money to further his business activities also, and we have always in the past blamed this as a corruption of a politicians’ position as PM.

Where is the legal watchdogs here or the stymied Governor General????

  18. Stupid things like polls are most of why people don’t think or feel any political reality also since we haven’t been in the position of loosing our democracy in the way that was WW2 no one truly feels threatened by our govts COMPLACENCY that’s the problem

  19. Stupid things like polls are most of why people don’t think or feel any political reality also since we haven’t been in the position of loosing our democracy in the way that was WW2 no one truly feels threatened by our govts COMPLACENCY that’s the problem

  20. What I would like to see is a Labour, Green, NZ First government. Greens and NZ First cannot be in government without Labout, that’s the simple reality of mmp. I’m over the bickering of what Labour did 30 plus years ago while our country and people burn under John key. I cannot blame the current Labour party for what a past Labour government did over 3 decades ago, just like I cannot blame John key for Muldoon, Bolger, Richardson and Shipley, who still has her greedy snout in the trough. There has been a very successful 3 termed Labour government under Helen Clark since then.

People have a choice, either stay divided and bicker about something that they cannot and will not ever change and let key rule until there is nothing left to fight for, or vote for a Labour, Green, NZ First alternative. The opposition are all on the same page, all 3 will keep each other in check For me its a no brainer, I want to see John key, National, Dunne, Seymour and the Maori party gone, kicked out of government.

    • of course!…don’t we all ?…but that does not mean we can’t criticise Labour now…and for what it has done recently…it does not mean we have to suspend our brains and mindlessly become PR propagandists for Labour when Labour is more in alignment with joneky nactional over certain issues and it shafts potential coalition partners eg Mana/Internet

Labour needs to get in behind a Left coalition instead of trying to lead with neoliberal agendas and shafting of others on the real Left

      • Spouting more inane misinformation serves no purpose. You obviously want John key to stay. For your information it will be a Labour led coalition, and the only person who shafted Mana was Hone Harawira himself.
