Restaurant Brands have agreed that existing staff will be offered the same terms of the collective agreement with Unite Union in future franchising of Carl’s Jr stores.

Any employees not offered employment on the same terms and conditions with the new franchisee will be offered redeployment to other Restaurant Brands owned stores.

Unite and RBL will also meet to discuss compensation for the members disadvantaged by the sale of the Gisborne Carls Jr franchise.

The collective agreement will also allow new franchise owners to become “subsequent parties”, which will include union members they employ in the existing agreement.

The company has also told the union that it has engaged a leading accountancy firm to do an independent audit of their payroll systems over how holiday pay is calculated.

Planned protests outside Restaurant Brand’s stores in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, and Gisborne will instead become victory celebrations for members and supporters.

“Today fast food workers will be taking action in many countries around thew world. The big difference between New Zealand and the rest of the world is that we have a union in this country that can take action and have problems resolved. Ending zero hour contracts and this latest agreement with Restaurant Brands are examples of that.”
