Key secretly meets Chinese donors to change flag, makes NZ a tax haven and goes up 3 points in new poll

The disconnect between the Left and middle NZ has grown even more wide with the latest TVNZ Poll showing Labour tumble 4 points and National jump 3 points.

It’s incredible that a Prime Minister as corrupt as Key is when it comes to abusing political power is still overwhelmingly loved by middle Nu Zilind.

The tax haven revelations and Key secretly meeting Chinese donors to get money to change the flag had not occurred at the time of the Poll so maybe there is a silver lining next month, but middle New Zealand seem to be as wedded to Key as they are to capital gains tax free property bubbles.

Labour dipping below 30% is a problem, but the simple reality is the Party has been too torn to pieces for a real alternative to emerge to Little’s leadership. Andrew will remain as leader and either win in 2017 or crash and burn.

NZ has become a cargo cult minus the cargo.

  1. Tonight I filled the bathroom basin in heavy vomit. I had to vomit endlessly for hours after following the ONE news tonight, with that poll. What has happened to the people and voters in this country? They make me SICK, truly sick, and I have my stomach turned inside out, with violent cramps tonight, it is unbelievable, how shallow, mean and brain washed about half of those bothering to vote and poll are.

Take me out of here, please, take me out of here, this madhouse, I cannot bear it any more, I am at risk of doing some harm to myself.

    • hope you are feeling better now and have cleaned your teeth…CLEANGREEN has some good views on taking action…see below

    • WTF did you expect Mike? For half of NZ its all fantastic, house prices going up. Yeah, easy credit on the new Merc or 4WD, offshore holidays paid for by second house rentals, plenty of tradies doing renos to make themselves rich. Lots of immigrants bringing in skills which the children of the less well off will have to pay nice middle class academics to get. And pushing up pressure on housing, its great for business. Its all good in Keyland, and over half the country lives very nicely there thanks to John and aspiration. Its a fekkin great party.

Aw sh*t, you don’t live in Otara or some food bank suburb do yer? You a bludging bennie? Hard luck, John and his aspiration mob don’t like you anyway, and as a bunch you don’t add up to 49% so fekk you.

And that folks is the way NZ is in 2016, rather sad really.

      • Spot on. Especially the “sad” bit.
I volunteer my skills in a local extended neighbourhood group in the Invercargill Bronx.
It is a brilliant place to live because of the real sense of community that is really working.
South Alive has been winning awards.
I mention this because it goes against the Key “Me Me Me” model.
His neighbourhood speaks loudly of the very type of person that he is.
There have been no meth labs discovered in our area.

  2. Polls usually come out claiming Key has gone up in popularity when there is an issue or issues, like Panama papers or chinese help to change the flag.
Polls can be rigged, they are just an opinion, usually by media polls favourable to the right.
Every time there is a critisism about Key out comes a poll praising him ,its just a game and should be ignored.

    • We all hear how Sanders had no chance and Corbyn is the devil – switch off the TV and forget about the polls. They are not relevant anymore.

      • Just VOTE National OUT and tell all your friends to VOTE National out. National want you to feel depressed and not vote. With TPPA signing they did it on a weekday and had a ‘transport strike’. But people still made it in droves. With climate change, again massive amount of people protesting in the rain. People care. We are just short of a leader. Or even a group of leaders to unite under. But if everyone does a couple of things like voting and encouraging others to vote we will get a change of government.

  3. Sadly Labour and Little currently do not offer a credible alternative. I have no love of Key and neither am I sitting on a huge capital gain but the Left just turns me off. In spite of that I shall probably continue to vote Labour in spite of being what some might call a “rich prick” although in reality comfortably off. I happen to believe in much of the Socialist ideal, but much of what I hear and the invective I read on this site depresses me.

If Labour wants to find the missing million it is people like me that you have to convince; middle NZ who you and others on the Left despise and make no effort to hide your contempt. So is it any wonder that middle NZ turns its back on you?

    • “Beatty”, you believe in the “socialist ideal”? Can you give some examples?

Do you believe in free healthcare?

      Free education?

      State housing?

Keeping state assets in public ownership?

      Progressive taxation?

      A strong, comprehensive welfare system?

      • there are lots like him who vote Labour mindlessly…if he were a real socialist he would not vote Labour but would vote for a more Left alternative like Green or NZF or Mana/Int

…and a real Socialist would be outraged with what is going on…and the ineptitude of the Labour Party which in reality is a yes man to jonkey nactional…and Not an effective opposition blue

…just look at Labour’s support for the slow demolition of KiwiBank!… and the supporting of the Spy Bill !… which allows overseas countries to spy on New Zealanders! Little was falling over himself to send NZ support troops into the Middle East at the behest of the Americans, even when jonkey was equivocating. Little is also a supporter of Hillary Clinton!

        • Thanks for insulting my intelligence. Your response is precisely why the Labour Party or any left coalition will remain in the wilderness.

    • The reason behind all the political wars and shenanikens , the left or right etc etc . go to todays Wake up New Zealand ,it is explained completely.

    • +1 Beaty. If the left are to succeed they must appeal to the middle class. Middle class often get denigrated by the left more than the super rich. Even though the super rich are so greedy they invented ‘social bonds’ so they can get even richer off the growing disadvantaged class they themselves are increasing. Talk about growing your business! sarc.

Political parties can’t dislike or undermine the people who they need to vote for you. That is something that the left need to concentrate on to win. John Key know this only too well, he pretends to be middle class, controls the media and uses ex Labour against itself like Cullen (spying and Kiwibank) and Clark (TPPA) to say Labour does it too.

On the Waatea political round up last week, David Parker seemed resigned to the fact that Key will get away with having NZ as a tax haven while Key himself benefits. Rachel seems to think that John Key could eat his own grandkids and still be popular. How the hell can middle NZ be expected to understand what is going on and vote differently if the Labour MP’s are publicly saying he will get away with it, as are left political commentators? Change the message!!

If in a half hour alternate media discussion important sound bytes are actually subconsciously supporting the status quo, then something needs to change with the left – how they see themselves and how they make their own messages count.

Start fighting for a start. At least we now have a stronger community of bloggers able to access mainstream BUT there needs to be a bit more reflection on why John Key has got away with so much. Maybe because people (Opposition parties, social groups, the public, the media) did not get together to hold him to account and that includes Labour and non mainstream media (clearly MSM just cheerlead whoever pays for that advertising slot or can cheaply fill up the columns). They need to collectively hold National to account for more than a few days and not let it disappears into the next hideous lie or decision that he makes .

As for Mana party, someone like Beatty might not be comfortable going that far, but it does not matter as long as she keeps voting Labour. The problem is are Labour listening to there long term supporters? This is a person (like many) who votes for them but feel they do not listen to her. If before the election something happens and she does not vote or worse votes to National – that is why National are winning.

The other thing she implied is that she is a home owner. There has been a relentless barrage against middle class home owners – Parker even talked about having a capital gains tax type system. This is something that scares middle NZ who are already struggling with rates and having some new taxation is not a vote winner. (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=11620168)

Yep I agree we should have more taxes on assets (but I feel micro taxes targeted to catch foreign tax evaders not just target residents) but feel that is a VOTE loser for middle NZ. Why keep bringing it up? Again one of the Greens final word on one of the shows was a WOF on rentals. I just don’t feel that paying to get the council in for a WOF will work when over 90% of WOF failed the inspection in the trial. By all means clean up rental houses, put in insulation, but we have a DIY culture and having council doing the inspections… well you lost me there. The council can’t even notice their own building is full of problems – please don’t inflict them further on housing (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11619820)

Tax avoidance by foreigners is something that Labour and the opposition should be holding Key to account to. Don’t let up on it and stop blaming the middle class for everything. It is not going to produce a change of government.

Plus you almost have to feel sorry for Little, with Labour’s troubled history of neoliberalism, and with Labour’s ex leaders like Cullen and Clark who still seem to be able to inflict an enormous amount of damage and influence to the Labour party. And these ex Labour figures just keep popping up because it serves National’s purpose to remind middle NZ of Labour’s past and divert attention off National.

  4. You write
” It’s incredible that a Prime Minister as corrupt as Key is when it comes to abusing political power is still overwhelmingly loved by middle Nu Zilind. ”

Perhaps middle Nu Zilinders are corrupt also? Polite, amenable, hard working, church going crooks who’d sell their kids into slavery for a dollar?

When was the last time you paid for some retail thing with a cheque? A cheque is only worth the trust placed upon it. Now a days bugger all people accept cheques, gas stations being one example.

Perhaps the reason for that is because people, Joe Average types, have been forced to become crooked. Jonky-stien types have normalised deviant, crooked behaviour therefore we, Joe Public, must take up the challenge. We must become as crooked, if not more so, than the Authority regimen who lords over us.
Once we go down that particular rabbit hole however, there’s no going back. Crookedness becomes accepted pratcise and if one practises enough? Well’ one gets good at it. After more than thirty years of neo liberalism many NZ’ers have become very good at being crooked.

Perhaps, for many NZ’ers jonky’s the perfect prime minister.

    Yeah, I know, right ?

    • You could be onto something there country boy.

Has any else noticed that the banks are converting all their ATM’s to cash deposit machines??? They are even advertising it now with people able make cash deposits 24 hours a day. Winner winner everyone. Had to wait 10 minutes to withdraw money because there were lines of people just putting cash into these machines like some sort of reverse pokie machines. Next minute I see Westpac advertising it.

With the changing demographics and types of occupations available in NZ it seems that ‘cash’ deposits day and night are increasing in demand.

  5. Andrew Little needs to genuinely commit to doing what is really needed to fix New Zealand. He needs to take note of how Corbyn and Sanders have inspired people. Getting honest would help a lot.

His instinct seems to be to try and have things both ways. Nobody respects that kind of wishy-washy fence sitting meekness. For me, it undermines his credibility when he’s attacking National, making me feel like he only feigns his anger. It makes him seem a bit bumbling too.

I doubt people really thought Labour would or will try to pop the housing bubble. That would have been political suicide. Fair or not, I think the election was a Muldoon vs Rowling style personality contest.

God knows how the fuck that poll result happened though, there has been no good or bad news to warrant it.

    • “His instinct seems to be to try and have things both ways. Nobody respects that kind of wishy-washy fence sitting meekness. For me, it undermines his credibility when he’s attacking National, making me feel like he only feigns his anger. It makes him seem a bit bumbling too.”

I would have to agree. Talking about ditching the capital gains tax policy after the last election, and some other policies, thinking they were not “popular” with people was too rushed and unwise a thing to do.

We now have had Labour talk about the future of work and also bring in discussion of the UBI. As soon as the shallow, poorly informed and also largely pro Nats biased MSM journalists asked questions to Little, and as soon as they did so with a negative undertone, Little swiftly pulled back from any idea about Labour adopting the UBI as a future policy.

It is not helpful to present ideas and arguments, and then pull back whenever the going gets a bit tough.

A firm, clear line is what is needed, not this attempt to dance with all dancing partners and please them at all times.

As we have it, nobody really knows much about where Labour stands, because of all this.

  6. This poll of course is a bit of bullshit .
It the same old trick… tell a lie often enoughand people will start to believe it.
Firstly it is a way of negating any fallout incurred by Key for wasting $26 million of hard earned tax payers money on a tea towel.
Secondly they are trying to rack up some propaganda credit in preparation for when the tax dodging trust account shit storm opens this Government up like a can of sardines.
Notice TV 1 has steadfastly avoided reporting Keys secret meeting with the Chinese…. therefore lying by omission.
And this morning Q@A had very interesting interviews with Winston Peters and also a Trust expert from Britain . Corin Dann got caned in both of them .
Where were the lengthy highlights on the news of these important interviews … Nada …..absoluta de nada.
Instead they report as an apropos of well…. nothing ….. a poll result of coarse supposedly favouring Key, with a complete run down on how things would now stack up in Parliament if an election were held tomorrow.??? What the f**k is all that about???
In fact Dann should be subbed off because his performance as a serious political interviewer and reporter has been woeful.
He needs to remember lying by omission is corruption !!

  7. Who said opinion polls are true? After 3 elections, 2 of which were rigged, National still couldn’t get 50%. Opinion polling is easily rigged and is not above political interference by the corrupt National government. Don’t let the spin hoodwink you, reality says something entirely different from the trumped up polls.

    • Delusional and Denial.
If one definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results. You can be certified.

How was the elections rigged? Please explain.

    • Exactly the poll aass most others are rigged. How they NEVER include the dont knows/undecided percentage . If this was included in the percentage from the poll then the polls result would be quite different. Labour would still not look good, which is unsurprising as their performance on issues is very dissaponting.

Take the TPPA. it took them a long time to come out against this concern of Kiwis. Then when they did Little then says ” When we get into power Labour will not withdraw from TPPA. Recently in the push to open at Easter (the only weekend that families can truly look forward to have off and enjoy the weekend as a family) by National supporters. Now Little has declared he is in favour of shops been able to open ..but ( yeah right pass the Tui!) workers Little say should be able to choose not to work if they dont want too !

  8. TVNZ poll says it all – funny the timing of these polls, always after some bad news story against the government, as if to say ‘ it’s alright john, everyone still loves you and your bunch of crooks, no worries, you keep f***king the country, sweet.’

    ….am I in the matrix?

  9. TVNZ poll says it all – funny the timing of these polls, always after some bad news story against the government, as if to say ‘ it’s alright john, everyone still loves you and your bunch of crooks, no worries, you keep f***king the country, sweet.’

    ….am I in the matrix?

  10. It’s no wonder this has happened….

    1. The MSM doesn’t inform the NZ people. Ask your average NZers about many current events stories and they are woefully ignorant about what’s going on in their own country and the world.
    2. 30 years of neo-liberal poison has done a lot of damage and a lot of people only care for themselves. They only realise the benefit of society when it’s too late and they’ve been thrown on the scrapheap.
    3. The NZ Labour Party does not offer an alternative to neo-liberalism. Read my lips, Labour Party. “We apologise unreservedly for the damage we wrought on New Zealand working people when we unleashed neo-liberalism on the country. We are a socialist party and will go back to representing our people.”

    • @ Paul

There is a sweet spot between neoliberalism and socialism. That is where labour needs to position itself to win.

If they reversed their current position they would do a lot better and actually make a difference.

The last few decades Labour ‘appear’ to be supporting neoliberalism with spying and defence and 5 eyes and supporting the super rich and ‘sort of, maybe’ TPPA and so called trade agreements (BTY our biggest export is the exported profits of transnational corporations, proving that foreign “investment” actually sucks out more money out of New Zealand than it puts in. https://thedailyblog.co.nz/2016/04/08/what-export-from-nz-is-bigger-than-seafood-milk-powder-combined/)

While the Labour socialism aspect seems to be focused on taxing the middle class, (but certainly not the dedication of taxing foreigners or the super rich!)

Labour needs to reinvent themselves away from neoliberalism. Get rid of spying, 5 eyes and harmful trade deals that are exporting more profits FROM NZ than goods or services), https://thedailyblog.co.nz/2016/04/08/what-export-from-nz-is-bigger-than-seafood-milk-powder-combined

Labour need to use socialism to help everyone in NZ have a fair go (not get bogged down in one sector) then they would be a lot more electable and look different from National.

  11. Mobilize the Opposition, Labour, NZ First, Greens, now!

Get them to Join together and place a fundraiser on the “give a little? website to go legal together as those who are our 50% representing the political Parties with our 50% vote and seize half of our public owned asset, of TVNZ & RNZ, so they can provide us a “balanced media platform to turn the sleeping NZ voter on again before it is to late!

Martyn, please join the call for the opposition to front up and take the public owned half we own back from the control of the Corporate Key lot and sing the democracy tune instead and tell the honest facts not propaganda and lies.

Be part of the new democracy public TV/Radio network be could become by taking half of TVNZ/RNZ again from these traitors.

  12. Where are these polls conducted? Our family, neighbours or friends have never been surveyed.

So I come to the conclusion, those surveyed reside in mainly blue/Asian areas! Places where the inhabitants are likely to be favourably treated by NatzKEY and vote accordingly!!

If that’s not the case, then the polls are deliberately manipulated/rigged with the help of a compliant msm to keep golden boy FJK in the glow of success, intentionally feeding the masses BS!

With all this grubby corruption and deceit surrounding us, let’s not lose sight of the fact of the “prominent NZer” case, which winds up this week. We should be keeping our eye on that one as well.

    • These Early type phone polls, are banned in many countries because they are widely known as politically rigged polls.

India for instance bans them prior as they were so corrupted.

Our family members have now found when they contacted them they asked several questions until our family members said they “did not like this Government”

Then the contact was ended as they said “thank you we have enough of your age group we don’t need your input”!!!

  13. It’s like the 1950s film Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Everyone looks normal but they keep on voting for John Key.

  14. How to alienate and disenchant people.

Just follow the playbook of the Labour party and Martyn.

“Secret Chinese donors, Chinese sounding surnames”

These are people who vote in NZ election but Martyn makes them out as agents of the Chinese government with sinister intentions; not contributing members of society. That we are a welcoming culture from a multicultural society.

The poll results are not surprising after the Flag debate, for the Left to go against their leanings for partisan purposes. It is going to disaffect some in the Middle with similar leanings. Unfortunately for the left, they are losing the new Culture war.
No longer associated with progressive views but the reactionary ones, all in the hopes of being tied to Winston Peters. Their only hope of regaining power.

  15. Even if you actually believe the invisible polls that fly around from time to time (I stopped believing them over a decade ago) it actually proves what a lot of us know already: that National’s popularity will only go down when the sleepy hobbits suddenly realize their paper assets are worth zilch and their bank accounts have been cleaned out down the drain chasing boom and bust illusions.
That hasn’t happened yet, so the backlash hasn’t happened yet.
The cracks are starting to show in the façade though: manufacturing is down, the dairy boom has become a bust (Nathan Guy must the only person who can’t see it), Australian banks are raking off big profits from New Zealanders. Huge waiting lists for elective surgery despite National cooking the stats, skyrocketing house prices..
You could fill a page with similar details but the bottom line is that while the sleepy hobbits can still believe the way ahead is paved with real gold, not the fool’s gold that it actually is, they will vote National until it personally hits them in the pocket. They don’t care about dirty politics, corruption or tax havens – they care only about how rich their portfolios are and as long as that continues all else is forgiven or ignored.
The question is whether National can keep up the illusion for another year and a half. They are certainly working overtime with flag referenda, reorganising the deck chairs on the Titanic (I mean reorganizing government departments) as well as working their MSM sycophants Paul Henry and Mike Hosking to a frazzle.
It’s hard work maintaining an illusion when all around is dark but National have spent years building up their propaganda machine – it is very efficient and is not finished yet.

  16. Interesting how when the polls are going up for the left many commenters here take them as gospel and when the opposite happens there are allegations the poll is rigged! Grant, CountryBoy, Mary_A, Words – I suspect your tin foil hats are on a bit tight.

If you want to know why Labour is in free fall, consider this: They have a leader with no leadership qualities and who comes across as angry all the time – he’s just not likeable; He was planted there by a ridiculed union led process which the voter base is disconnected from; They opposed a free trade agreement they initiated; They opposed the flag change even though it is still their own policy; Almost inconceivably Little proposed legislating banks interest rates – even financial retards know that was the dumbest idea in NZ political history…. Little’s own “sorry for being a man” moment that will come back to haunt him come election time

I could go on and on about the foot in mouth moments but bizarrely many think it all come right if Labour lurch even further left cause that’s working out so well around the rest of the world eh?

  17. Sleepy hobbits…Chinese conspiracy theories…FFS

The vitriole represented here isn’t free of consequences. Labour needs to make itself electable and this sort of crap consolidates the middle class into Key’s hands. The middle class has no where to go, Labour is moving further left and hates them (very well demonstrated in the comments here).

What’s going to change here? My bet nothing will, the left blogosphere will continue to tear itself apart in apoplectic rage within its own echo chamber, meanwhile those so called “sleepy hobbits” will merrily vote in National for another term.

    Labour need to…

Change their leaders, ensure a broader experience base for new MPs (more business leaders in particular please) avoid ridiculous sound bites, create a reasonable policy programme and wait for events to get you into power. Once in power allow the coalition partners to drag Labour a bit further left to gain some progressive traction. Repeat every 3 years (and gradually expand the breadth and depth of left of centre policy over time once electoral trust becomes established).

Now sort your shit out and make yourselves electable.

  18. NZ Labour Party need policies which have clarity, certainty and conviction with a leader and others in the party who are able to articulate these policies in a decisive and convincing manner. To have power in the voice one needs to have power in the soul and in the mind.
This strength or power will shed light on and override buckets full of the hypnotic sleeze and froth from the MSM and the political ventiloqist’s dolls they must support, if they are not to be thrown off the bus into the wilderness.
Victory over a hyena can’t be won by waving a pot of warm vaseline.

  19. What if and I say what if – nothing is true – polls and TV News – just saying. Who’s going to challenge.
After all, every-man has his price, even John.
