So what would you expect to be the main story of the week that the Political Editor and Editorial of the largest newspaper in NZ focus on?

Surely the admission this week that the PM lied about ‘Jihadi Brides’ would be a contender right? Here the PM has been caught out purposely pretending these ‘Jihadi Brides’ were in NZ when in fact they actually lived in Australia – that would be the big story of the week right? Especially in light of how Key has used these supposed threats as the excuse to give the GCSB and SIS even MORE power.

But Audrey Young and the NZ Herald editorial didn’t focus on that story.

How about the fact the Police were forced to destroy and hand back Nicky Hager’s information they had seized illegally in a botched up raid on his house after he embarrassed the Government of the day? That’s a huge story that cuts to the very heart of the Fourth Estate being able to hold the powerful to account, that would be the big story right?

Wrong again. To my horror, they have decided to launch full scale attacks on Andrew Little for the racism nonsense and his desire to put the boot into the banks.

Threaten the lazy immigration that is keeping Auckland’s property bubble up and attack the banks who are fuelling it, and the Herald like a snarling attack dog leaps and mauls any politician who dares threaten the money that keeps them afloat.

The Herald is a compromised right wing rag there to protect the elites and attack anyone who threatens those elites.

Friends don’t let friends read the NZ Herald.

  1. It\s a Natz trumpet and highly one eyed biased to Government rag not worth the paper it’s written on mate.

  2. You and people like you with your incessant accusations of racism when there isn’t has lead to where we are now.

    • You’re right. They seem to have a problem with non-white immigrants.
Wanting to keep the benefits of White Privilege, but ranting about White Privilege, the irony.

Oh wait, it has to be the deserving people of colour not those Asians who will now vote for National, en-masse.

  3. I noticed this too. . . With the amount of pics of national MPs increasing in the rag, and the frequent dishing of Andrew little, one can truly say the Herald is officially the ‘National party newsletter.’

  4. I was bemused by the ” advertorial ” in the Herald. Subtle in his derision of Rt.Hon. Andrew Little and NZ First, I surmise the ” editor ” and his ” key cronies ” are afraid of affairs afoot which shall challenge their existence and undermine their sullen security.

    • Well. the latest Roy Morgan is out giving the left bloc a 51% lead over the right bloc at 49%. RM polls usually favour the Nats so this turnaround (albeit small) is quite significant. Hence the dissing of Andrew Little?

Little has to get used to this and learn to frame his comments in an unambiguous way leaving little room for media misrepresentation. We saw
another example of this behaviour a few days ago from Andrea Vance in an opinion piece for One News.

  5. As an annexe to my ” last “. Smug secureness pervades the 4th Estate and the current government. E-606, M-18, Y- one and a half.

  6. They spent 4 weeks on Phil Goff dying his hair.
They spent 4 weeks on a ‘tricky’ campaign combined with a fake party donation story against David Cunliffe.
This storm in a teacup attack on Little is about inflicting as much damage as possible in the lead up to the negative fallout created by Key wasting $30 million of the taxpayers money on a $2 dollar shop tea towel design flag.
Expect more over the next week to try and mask what is yet another failure by Key!

    • 100% Grant they are worried why else would the NatZ shills’ be all over the place right now ahead of the phoney flag referendum?????

On that note; “The Electoral Commission” you know they are the oines that shut down clever cartoons about the NatZ in the last election including “On Planet key” but let national keep their cartoon showing a Labour boat sinking?

I asked the Electoral Commission “Chief returning officer” Robert Pedem what type of counting process they use, is it manual or electronic tabulation?

I got nothing back from them.

It seems Robert Pedem has lost his contract as of 2015???? as he was absent when we phoned last week.

So now who is counting this flag voting or the next political election??

      Perhaps NatZ are?

One has to wonder! so we want to see an independent review of this shabby so called “Independent” Electoral Commission probably stacked by NatZ shills no doubt.

Corruption everywhere folks I am afraid now.

      • That’s right. There’s so many !
There was also 3 weeks devoted to David Cunliffe not being able to instantly remember a 10 year old form letter.
Then another 2 weeks on him taking his family skiing for the day while on business in Queenstown.
At the same time Key was on holiday in Hawaii for 10 days and it barely got a mention.
        The hypocrisy knows no bounds!!

  7. +1000 Martyn

There is zero point in bothering to read the herald anymore as it is absolute lies and propaganda with a bit of trivia to get people hooked.

Just read the Guardian (although not perfect) at least they have both commentary, facts and interesting conclusions from writers.

Sadly that is missing from NZ MSM which has commentary, lies and innuendo and every commentator makes the same conclusions every time. (John Key is amazing, he is popular, Labour does it too, Little is a joke).

Boring and pathetic MSM, move on.

Would like to see the opposition leaders on Waatea 5th Estate. maybe their views on what is really happening in NZ each month

  8. Oh lets be kind to the poor paper. At most it’s got less than a decade to run before it’s demise. It’s already into the mid stages of advanced senility that will progressively get worse until it becomes a free shopping rag.

  9. Of course.

The mainstream media has an important role to play in keeping the masses dumbed-down, and believing the interests of the masses correspond with the interests of the 1%.

It amazes me that people will actually part with money to acquire disinformation and trivia…..but the fact that they do just goes to show how effective the brainwashing has been.

    • Keep in mind though that the money the Herald gets from subscriptions and people buying copies at the dairy is a tiny proportion of their revenue, probably not even enough to cover the cost of distribution. The real money comes from advertisers, and the fear of advertisers being offended by the paper’s contents creates a chilling effect on what they do and don’t publish. Along with the power of owners (see Outfoxed doco about Murdoch’s editorial interfering), the power of advertisers is one of the 5 gatekeepers of the commercial mass media (state-owner or privately-owned), as discussed by Chomsky and Herman in ‘The Manufacturing of Consent’.

  10. Just as appalling was Greg Boyed’s interviews on Q&A this morning.
The PM was allowed to waffle away in his usual style and Boyed let him go unchallenged time and again.

Yet when it can to him interviewing Grant Robertson, Boyed deviated off subject to ask irrelevant and petty questions about Andrew Little. Very much using ad hominem arguments and comments rather than asking questions of policy and substance. A great opportunity lost by an interviewer whose job seems a little beyond him.

And, using a bit of Boyed’s own tactics, let me comment that he’s very difficult to listen to: his phrases run illogically into one another which makes understanding what he is saying sometimes very difficult and he often drops his voice to inaudible at the end of a sentence. Same when he reads the news. Cannot we get someone who’s a little more erudite and listenable than Boyed – at least on so-called ‘public’ TV?

    • Boyd did not interview Key it was the suck up Jessica Much and it was the usual fireside chat he wasnt pushed once
I have seen her with Key overseas and they seem to have a friendly relationship
just what you want from an impartial presenter NOT!
Boyd spent much of his time cutting off the union guy when he was asked to comment on the subject
Key had a lot to answer for and this was just another be seen and talk about the flag
She never questioned him over more serious events apart from the TPPA
Under no pressure he still speaks a lot of shit
Grant Robertson was clear and concise and was pushed to give Boyd answers on work thats not been finalised yet
      Another missed opportunity

    • It didn’t take Slater, (who is not a journalist, despite all the efforts of Mrs Helen Soper when she worked at TVNZ), long to crash and burn that rag.

  11. “The Herald is a compromised right wing rag there to protect the elites and attack anyone who threatens those elites” And yet these imbeciles who run that rag cannot understand why their readership continues to drop. These same imbeciles do not realise that people who loath the National Party are also consumers who respond to advertising too.

To get the numbers, to lure advertisers, to make money, they try free papers coupled with bargain deals if you become a subscriber, almost anything they can think of but change their fucked up political bias. There are days when the Herald almost manages to be a reasonable paper but then along comes the same old shit from Audrey Young, Mike Hosking, Larry Williams and as always, the Editorial and boom, it’s all over, they may as well not have bothered trying to gain subscribers.

If you are reading NZ Herald, take note and if you are not you should be because it’s places like this where your once loyal subscribers have gone!

  12. This is just another example of why part of the political revolution we need is a media revolution, where people stop letting corporate-owned gatekeepers act as the High Priests of what is and is not real or important. We all need to sift the internet for our “news” and help each other learn to think critically about what we read and watch, and filter sources for credibility (topic-by-topic as well as in general). As the Pythons said in ‘The Life of Brian’, “you’ve all got to work it out for yourselves”.

Opposition parties also need to stop giving the commercial media outlets the power to frame the debate, by engaging directly with the people through online channels. For example communicating through social media, or running online referenda using platforms like Loomio. If the only political people who ever appeared in propaganda rags like the Herald were the ones allied with pro-corporate parties, people would be forced to accept that they’re not the “fair and balanced” journalism they claim to be.

  13. With NZH’s weekend editorial and Audrey Young’s piece, both attempting to discredit Andrew Little’s leadership, I see today second rate tabloid columnist Rodney Hide is subtly having a go at Winston Peters as well, suggesting he might be NZ’s Donald Trump!

Obviously the latest RM poll results, giving NZF a solid boost, as well as Little’s consistent challenge of FJK this past week, is rattling the NatzKEY mob, so have issued instructions to msm to diss Peters as well as Little at every opportunity.

Could be the beginning of the forthcoming NatzKEY dirt campaign to destroy both leaders credibility, in time for next year’s election!

Putting the boot in early it seems!

  14. I also remember reading, just out of interest, the comments on a free subscription page sent via Facebook – and there was not a kind word amongst them – it seems, even if it is ‘free’, the Herald is NOT WANTED.

  15. I have no hope for people like Audrey Rather Old or what her name is. She should retire, she does her profession no honour. Like so many others, they seem to be pre occupied with what colour shirt a person wears, than what sticks in the shirt.

New Zealand has always been struggling with matters of substance, as a colonial and post colonial back stop, but hey, this level of MSM trivialism we now get is disgusting.

Talk about latte drinking, bored, self righteous and idiotic journalists, there are too many fitting that category.

They deserve not to be writing for the Herald or for any other media, send them off into retirement.

  16. Yes I fear this is what is happening that Andrew L is now going to have the same treatment dished out to Cunliffe.

  17. National are feeling a bit panicky at the moment: things aren’t going so hot for them. Time for the Nat Herald to spin the wheel of dirty politics again and create some more fiction to shore up National’s Sugar Candy Mountain.

  18. E Day – 600, M- 18 , Y- two and a half. The key problem here is that the PM thinks his shit does not stink, as do 41% of ” self made Kiwis” He is in a for a ” dealing to “. Election Day minus 600. Yes I am counting and planning for ” the end of the beginning “.
