The manner in which these armed Oregon militia (who are threatening open rebellion in America and have seized a Federal centre) are being dealt with when compared to Muslim ‘terrorists’ or unarmed black teenagers is remarkable isn’t it?
If you want to see privilege in action – this is it. White armed militia who are to be talked down gently compared with the shoot first and not get prosecuted second style of engagement with anyone not white should be glaringly apparent to everyone.

Or it could be that, since the article isn’t very clear about the details, the farmers possibly risked a massive fire and armed men occupying buildings is a really bad idea? And do you have any evidence that things like Muslim extremists occupying buildings?
I don’t know the exact details of the original case. But I’m going to go on the record saying that unless they had police break into their house, shoot their family, put them on trial for existing and sentence them to death, there probably shouldn’t be armed men taking over a government building to ‘protest’. I note that the two charged stated their intent to go and report to the prison, it doesn’t sound like they were calling for this to happen.
On another note. In Australia, a guy bulldozed 200 metres around his house to clear trees and was fined $100k and court costs. A month later a fire ripped through his area. His house was the only one standing.

Can see the point of this article but there are some differences, however tenuous it may seem…
1) The American constitution contains the ‘right to bear arms; – not against each other but as a safeguard against a govt that has become out of control and threatens the democratic freedoms of its people…and thus the idea of a militia… retains some form of validity here.
2) Simply because of the threat of force and citing democratic freedoms and the numbers involved… it carry’s far more political weight ( rightly or wrongly ) in the public’s perception. It differs from Waco Texas in that Waco was easily explained away as a ‘cult’ per say by the authorities with women and children present… these are armed men.
3) Usually , lethal force used against minority groups occurs singularly , – and is random and carried out by officers predisposed towards racism. Its harder to gun down a fully armed group acting as a militia – esp one citing the constitution. That same racist officer might find he has a hard time using his lethal force – as these guys can fire back.
4) What this act does is tap into a common vein among many Americans viewpoint’s – that of overbearing govt interference and manipulation – and the authority’s know this. So they cant just go in guns blazing.
5) We learn these are ‘ right wingers’ – but are they ? … what they seem like is a lot of rural based people with a tradition of not being particularly inclined to trust the Federal govt. Or people with those sentiments.
It may be true that there is a double standard , but I’ll bet the reason for the difference boils down to several main ones.
a) There are many small rural areas across the States and most of the people living in them are white. These people also form the political voting power-base of those community’s politicians.
b) And the fact these people are citing the constitution automatically invokes the specter of a corrupt and overbearing govt in the minds of many… they may not all be just a bunch of ‘poor dirt farmers’ but have political and business connections as well…
It might also be that Waco for example was in a semi arid location with no immediate threat to other members of the public – whereas this group seems to be in public buildings and the like – so direct action may not be that advisable.
I think the main difference is that these people have cited the constitution as their basis for defending their claims , – it might be this that prevents direct action and any gung ho belligerent over the top attitude by authority’s so far.
Its interesting that even Charles Manson cited at his trial that there was a breach of his constitutional rights. Later examination of his claims did in fact prove that technically – he was right.
Oh dear. It seems i was ways off the mark and kinda didn’t know squat about the guy lighting fires. Such as that he had repeatedly messed up his burns in the past, demonstrated an inability to contain them, caused wildfires that burned huge swathes of adjacent land that wasn’t his, and kept right on at it over and over again, messing it up each time.
and that the ranchers want to keep mining and logging resources that don’t really exist in that part of the world in any economical sense.
