Oh come on! Key is lying about not sending more troops…

John Key: NZ ‘not likely’ to do more in fight against Isis
Prime Minister John Key says he does not know if the United States will be disappointed that New Zealand will not do more to contribute to the fight against Isis (Islamic State), despite the country’s formal request.

“I think some people would say yes and some people would say no,” he told Newstalk ZB’s Mike Hosking this morning.

…do NZers have the memory of goldfish? Remember when Key was asked BEFORE the election if we would send troops to reinvade Iraq and he said we wouldn’t, then right after the election off to war we go.

Key will tell NZers whatever they want to hear while privately agreeing with the US that we will do whatever they want. This is the true price of the 5 Eyes Club, unending war.

  1. Paul Buchannan ( security adviser and analyst ) once spoke about the deployment of our soldiers as subject to ‘ mission creep’ – whereby they would potentially graduate from ‘mere training ‘ Iraqi troops to leading them in missions – all in the guise of ‘training ‘ the troops in real time.

Now – two things here :

When Key says he ‘doesn’t know’ , what this translates into is ‘I’m leaving the door open with that answer’. It is the perfect foil against adverse public opinion and potentially embarrassing ‘ having to go back on our words’. And look like a liar.

And the other thing is to avoid the USA appearing like they are doing this unilaterally as they did under Bush and his little lapdog Blair… this time round they have requested other country’s to side with them to avoid bad publicity about unilateralism.

And as Key has obviously signed up to the TTPA and it is only a formality in waiting , he is obliged to follow through with troops in Iraq in order to be seen as a true participant in any initiatives the USA implements.

It is interesting that having a seat on the U.N came after his covert decision to side with the USA in Iraq. The time-frames show ample evidence of this.

Hence Key was lying when he reassured the public of New Zealand we would not send troops to Iraq. And there is nothing to stop him lying again about sending more.

  2. This whole affair is diminishing the mana of NZDF.

You just can’t train a thoroughly corrupt and yellow army if your not willing to get into the muck. These guys have the worst recorded route in all of history when, ten Iraqi divisions (100k men) turned yellow in the face of 10-20k terrorists.

It’s a joke if we think we can change that with out leading ISF into battle

    • Hard to fight with limited ammo, food, water, fuel, poor leadership, and low moral. The ‘yellow’ troops can’t do mutch about corrupt brass.

      • What a mess. We could make the same observations about NZDF. Our deployment also has stuff all of anything and poor political leadership.

    • What the fuck do you know about the situation of the long suffering Iraqi soldier? Sam.

Were you there? Did you live through any of the wars these guys have witnessed over the past 30 years? Watching their families butchered by Iran’s armies, Saddam, then the US and now ISIS.

      No, thought not.

You really haven’t a clue, sitting on your arse, probably wearing your thumbs out on computer war games calling others yellow.

      • Three things.

        – Iran has never invaded any country in all its history

        – Iraq ceased to exist when IS took Mosal

        – Iv been there

  3. Before the election he said we would send no troops, and after the election we sent troops. When Key says no, he means yes. Always. He is a consistent and compulsive liar. He said no more troops yesterday and today he’s saying ‘at this stage it is unlikely we will send more’ and next week more troops will be sent, after the conspiracy about ‘jihadi bribes’ has been firmly implanted in the mindless heads of his people through mainstream media. America said jump, so…. jump.

  4. The First Gulf War of the early nineties was a ” Western Rort ” propping up a Royal Dynasty of Kuwait which violated the border of Iraq. It was a war providing reassurance to the timid souls of the House of Saud and to the Sheikdoms of the United Arab Emirates , granting them the status of ” protectorates under the umbrella of the “Coalition Forces”.
The Second Gulf War of our new millennium was a planetary disaster
ignited by g.w.bush junior as a’…Crusade…’ done on the premise of creative intelligence in partnership with john blair in the Global War on Terrorism.
The War in Afghanistan follows as another protracted disaster an” Act Three ” in the play of ” Wars in the Middle East ” .
The “western puppets “are killed or executed and then the Arab Spring unfolds. The Daesh/ISIL/ISIS/The Levant, call it whatever, fills the void following this debacle and it’s fundamentalist cultish and extreme mode of warfare gains limited territorial gain and to date keeps the “Western Coalition” standing at a distance , too afraid to get involved.
I refer the reader to my comments to the blog of Chris Trotter of 19th November ,’…Responding to the Paris Attacks…’ The views I hold in my appreciation still stand.
The deployment of our company sized contingent to Iraq, sanctioned by Key was and remains a tactical unsound and dangerous decision.
This key knee jerk commitment in response to the “Five Eyes” was a another example of the PM’s playing the “club game”.
He has missed the opportunity to be an international statesman. I think he should have used the podium of the UN Security Council to make a stand. He could have stood out and suggested ‘..that until I see a strong resolve by my alliance partners to put boots on the ground with less but more accurate air to ground attack support I shall not risk the lives of my boys and girls in uniform.’

I believe our soldiers are in the wrong place and we should bring them home now. Now that there is a USA brigade deployed in Kuwait, and aircraft carriers at sea ,Key could chair the alliance to see ground forces deployed by the UK and Canada and then redeploy our troops to Kuwait where they are seriously ring fenced.
It is a coincidence that the bus ride from Camp Taji is only approximately eight to ten hours ( 550 km more or less ) that from Auckland to Camp Linton. (Linton Military Camp)
Whilst the Iraq Defence Force, morale-wise is a spent force , and depleted unlike it once was in the eighties as a formidable engineering army, it has also furnished the ISIS with much of it’s command
structure. So it is that The PM and his incumbent Minister of Defence, Brownlee ( poorly suited and unqualified for the job) have conducted a negligent risk assessment to a green on blue incident occurring inside the wire where our soldiers are currently stationed. God forbid the thought but death could be ” justa “a text message or an iPhone call away.
    Mtr Prime Minister

  5. The First Gulf War of the early nineties was a ” Western Rort ” propping up a Kuwaiti Royal Dynasty , which violated the border of Iraq. Furthermore the ” coalition ” gave reassurance to the timid House of Saud and the Sheikdoms of the United Arab Emirates that were under a Western Umbrella as ” quasi protectorates”
The Second Gulf War was a planetary disaster. It was primed by g.w.bush junior as a q.’….Crusade….’ in the Global War on Terrorism.
It was protracted and achieved nothing other than misery for the Arab World and was an Act Three of the play, ” Global Conflict Ad Nauseum”.
The Arab Spring succeeds the ” bush blair ” debacle and now we are seeing the the Daesh/ISIS/ISIL/The Levant, call it whatever filling the void.
I refer the reader to my comments to the blog by Chris Trotter of 19th November ‘…Responding to the Paris Attacks..’ to which I remain firm in my appreciation.
I strongly believe that the knee jerk decision by Key to deploy our company sized contingent of troops to Iraq has been and remains a dangerous and premature one.
Rather than sucking up to the ” Five Eyes ” so quickly he might have been more of an international statesman to use the UN Security Council as a podium to convey a message to the world that this dangerous sect , propagated out of a bed of Hell needs to be destroyed under an international coalition. He could have said ‘..that until I see a clear commitment by Canada and the UK to place boots on the ground, supported by less frequent BUT MORE ACCURATE air to ground attack I will NOT expose my soldiers to unnecessary risk and strive to minimise death and casualties to the innocent…’
Today we have a USA Brigade deployed in Kuwait for the right and logical reasons. There are aircraft carriers in the Med.
The Iraq Defence force is morally spent and depleted, unlike the formidable engineering army it was in the eighties and much of it’s former seasoned command structure has been lost to the ISIS.
God forbid, but it could only only be a text message from one old comrade in ISIS to another in the disaffected Iraqi command structure being retrained to carry out a green on blue incident amongst our soldiers with tragic consequences. .

The PM and his incumbent Minister of Defence , Brownlee an ignorant oaf , disloyal ( by his conduct in the House towards a group of war veterans in 2013 ) unqualified and unsuitable for the role are committing negligence in their responsibility to our troops near to Baghdad.
Bring our troops home NOW Mr Key and listen to the wise and experienced counsel of your military commanders.
Redeploy them when the UK and Canada commit, and then conduct an operation with resolve.
The key issue is that his decision making has been unsound and half hearted and that can end in sad results.
