Disruption expected as New World workers take public stand

Christmas shoppers at Westfield Albany can expect disruption in the run-up to Christmas as New World workers take a public stand for better pay and conditions, says FIRST Union national organiser Bill Bradford.

“New World Albany is among the wealthiest stores in the country, but its workers are some of the worst paid.”

“Why should New World workers struggle to make ends meet when each year they help create super-profits,” asks Bradford.

“New World Albany owner Jamie Eden is creaming it because he refuses to pay his workers a fair wage for the work they do.”

“But this year workers at New World Albany are their supporters in the community are taking a public stand. Actions will be held at Westfield Albany to highlight the issue of unfair pay and conditions.”

“The parents, grandparents and partners who work at New World Albany should earn enough to give their families a decent Christmas,” says Bradford.

“We’re calling on Jamie Eden to stop acting so selfishly and to put working people and their families first.”

  1. Why target New World, all or most of big business is paying as little possible and get away with it,there should be a nationwide strike until minimum wage is increased to a livable standard.
Look to the National government, they are the proponents of minimum wage, saying businesses cant afford to lift the rate, but millions can be spent on flags , overseas luxury pads for so called diplomats, rugby junkets for polititions, the list is endless.Key caters to and enables his backers to get rich at the expence of low paid workers, these backers are his life support, and nz taxpayers are paying the price.

Christmas shoppers can stay home and relax. For many, it will be a welcome respite from the madness of “christmas” consumerism.

Kia kaha to the New World workers!
